The Show
Not sure where I got the lossless files of this from but there's a nice story to how this recording ended up in the public domain - you can read about that and find out more about the gig HERE. You can also find a link on there to listen to the original (albeit on YouTube), so you can compare it to this one if you like. Essentially this was a soundboard recording, with a small part of an audience recording spliced in to cover a gap where the tape stopped. It sounded pretty good - someone did a good job putting the original together, so kudos to them - but I knew I could fix a few things and make it sound better.
What Was Done
Going back to my notes - dropouts here and there were fixed, some pops - especially mic pops later on in the gig. Some rustling noise on 1 channel at 1 point. Part of 1 song was missing where there was a cut or maybe a skip in the digital transfer. I fixed that so unless you know this gig intimately, you won't be able to tell. Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed
that. Where the audience tape was spliced in and out wasn't quite in time with the rest of the recording so I edited that too. The mix had the drums slightly more over 1 side than the other so I brought that back to sound more balanced.So yeah, quite a lot.
Once all that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall. The result sounds great, I think really powerful; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
