stereo FM recording from the time. Not in bad shape but pretty muffled sounding and flat, with some voiceovers and issues.

What Was Done
I had to chop out a random bit of continuity announcer early in the gig, remove a gap after repairing the end of 1 song, and removed voice overs before and after the encores. Once that was
done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity back. Then final mastering to make it more
powerful overall and balance the sound better. The result is a great sounding gig.

As always, the show is available to download or stream for free as a single 320kbps MP3. Like almost all TV broadcasts back then, this was in mono. The original show can be watched here on YouTube.

What Was Done
The recording was generally in good shape for a VHS recording nearly 40 years old but was fairly murky and muddy, lacking in low and high frequencies. Volume was also a bit up and down in places and more on the right than the left (a mono soundtrack but recorded on a stereo VHS so there were 2 channels of mono). Once the volume was leveled out and the 2 channels balannced, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity to the sound mix, so bass, drums, vocals, especially were more audible and everything was clearer. And made one or 2 other little fixes at the beginning and end, so the show flows better. Finally, I mastered to make it clearer still and more
powerful overall, and much "wider". The result is very very listenable now.

As always, the show is available to download or stream for free as a single 320kbps MP3. audience recording from either the 3 or 4 August. The original bootleg has appeared credited to both dates - Kraftwerk played both nights at this venue. There are performances here that you can imagine the likes of Afrika Bambaataa standing watching and taking on board as influences - the likes of It's More Fun To Compute especially.

What Was Done
The sound quality and volume varied widely from bright to muffled, so I did what I could to even that out. There are a few small cuts where the sound jumps - I smoothed those out as best I could but missing are a few seconds of Metal on Metal/Abzug, the beginning of Pocket Calculator brief parts between Pocket Calculator and The Robots, and early on in It's More Fun To Compute. There are a couple of points during the gig where the bass synths were so loud they literally rattled the PA and overloaded the recording a bit (brief bits of distortion, in other words). I've done what I could to reduce the effect of that.

Once that was
done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity to the sound mix - this took a long time this time, given how varied the sound quality was throughout. I then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall, and wider. The result is far far better and a really good listen; I'm sure
you'll enjoy it.

The All Important Download Link

You can

It sounded a bit "tinny" although it was pretty clear. According to the blurb with the bootleg, Happy House was recorded from a later broadcast of the same show. There are a couple of versions of this bootleg out there - 1 with fewer tracks than the other. And the setlist listed on Setlist.fm for this venue doesn't even have Happy House listed at all! Setlist.fm isn't always accurate, so who knows... Happy House is listed at some other gigs around that time as being played as an encore, so I went with what the text file accompanying the bootleg said, and blended it in on the end here.

What Was Done
I removed various things like a bad click after Nightshift, a weird short hum and quite a lot of FM interference noise from Voodoo Dolly. On the original, Voodoo Dolly was cut off and Happy House started - I faded out the former, while editing the latter so it blends together better. Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed
that.

Once that was
done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring back some bottom end to the recording and some
clarity to the sound mix - you can hear Steve Severin's bass far better now and John McGeoch's guitar sings clearly without hurting your ears. Budgie's drums are also clearer. I then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall. The result is really really good; I'm sure
you'll enjoy it.

The All Important Download Link

You can

Somewhere along the line, somebody put the whole show together from the FM and TV recordings, so hats off to them for that. I was asked by a client to restore some Elton John live recordings, including this one. This was the last of several nights Elton played at the Hammersmith Odeon that week. Listen out for Rod Stewart, who makes an appearance for White Christmas, at the end of the show. And enjoy the band, they are phenomenally good.

What Was Done
I found a couple of spots in the show where the original recording levels were too high and distortion was introduced so I've done what I could to reduce the effect of that. There were some dropouts which I fixed. Also some clicks here and there throughout the recording were removed. Some high pitched FM interference whistling at 1 point was taken out, and an odd rumble noise at 1 point.

Once that was
done, the recording was then split up again to allow stereo and mono parts of
the gig to be treated separately. I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity to the sound mix. The TV mono parts were processed
separately to blend better with the stereo parts, and then once everything was merged back together. the complete recording was mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful. It sounds like a really great recording now and hopefully is the best version of this gig yet.

The All Important Download Link

You can

THIS one is the unused first night and was sourced from 2 CD bootlegs. The show includes the brilliantly enthusiastic MC introducing Bowie, the whole set and all the encores - the show lasts just over 2 hours altogether and features 27 songs.

What Was Done
The main problem with the first night (this one) was on the first 2 songs - several instances of someone (a recording engineer/sound guy presumably - if you know, please leave a comment) deciding to talk into a mic and this being picked up REALLY LOUDLY on the recording so it obscures the band and Bowie, somewhat, for a few seconds each time. Using some of my studio toys for a few hours, I was able to reduce the volume on this guy's voice without affecting the band and Bowie. It's not gone altogether (that WAS starting to affect the music) but it's much less distracting.

There
were some dips in volume to take care of and then I needed to edit the 2 CD sides together in 1 file without you noticing. Once that was
done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring more clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered it all to make it clearer and more
powerful overall. You can really hear the instruments being played now more clearly than on the source. This is a really strong performance and a really great sounding recording now.

The All Important Download Link

You can

This is the band supporting Lou Reed, on their first tour of the USA, just a few months after the release of their first album New Boots And Panties. This is only the 2nd show of the tour - a really good support slot performance.

What Was Done
The recording was in broadly good shape when it was given to me. There
were some dropouts and rough fadeouts - presumably someone at some point had removed radio ads. I cleaned up the fades and fixed a few drop outs and microphone thumps here and there. I also removed some looped audience noise between 2 songs which I guess was inadvertently added by the radio station while editing back in 1978 - but for once, this was all fairly straightforward. There is still a little tape hiss but it's so low as to be pretty unobtrusive.

The recording was a bit flat and lacking in depth and sparkle - so I got to work to bring back both - low end so you could hear the bass and kick more clearly, some
clarity and space to the sound mix so guitar, snare, keyboards and vocals are all more distinct, and then mastered to make it clearer still and more
powerful overall, and wider. The result sounds great I think - and brings out the best in a great live performance.

The All Important Download Link

You can

A pseudo stereo version was passed to me by a listener a while back and while it was super wide and clear, it was also...not very powerful. Everything sounded quite far away, if you like. So I found the original mono version elsewhere on the internet and decided I would have more fun improving that.

What Was Done
There were some gaps and fadeouts - removed the gaps and improved the fadeouts so the gig flows better (the first few seconds of a couple of songs are sadly missing). Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed that. There was some mains hum noticeable in quiet parts - removed most of that. The last few songs sound like they're from a different source and were louder on the left than the right - fixed that. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and wider. The result is really really nice; I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And if, like me, you really enjoy those drum fills in Bombers - turn the sound up for a treat! series of free downloads, starting in January 2017, featuring radio sessions
that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired, restored and
then remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No
theme tune, no intro from me - just the original restored session, available in a downloadable zip file containing each
separate track.

Tracklisting:
1. 10 James Orr Street
2. Little River
3. Secrets
4. Trees And Flowers

The very brief intro and first line on 10 James Orr Street was missing, so I faded that in. Also a small section of Secrets sounds like it was from a different copy of the recording and was spliced in as a repair at some point in the past. I've done what I can to make that blend in better. Otherwise it has cleaned up very nicely and is a nice set of early 80s jangly and moody pop!

The zip file for this session contains remastered FLAC and MP3 versions - the source files were low grade MP3s - I saved these in lossless WAV format to work on and then exported these from that lossless master. You can download it HERE.

If you wish to express gratitude and donate a dollar or the cost of a coffee towards site costs in return, head on over to the Donations tab. Shows for a few years might remember that every so often I have to take a break due to chronic (ie long term) health stuff that sometimes gets worse and takes over. Unfortunately that time has come along again. I’ve already been spending less time on screens than usual recently but it seems that’s not helping, so I plan on taking a few weeks off from this. Hoping to be back working on restorations in September but it will take as long as it takes...it's not really something I can plough on through and carry on without making things very much worse.

Anyone donating to the site will still get whatever they request; they rarely take long to sort out and I will be checking emails most days. Copies online are usually marked as 2 December 1983 - but all sources I can find point to the band playing ending the UK tour by playing on the 2 and 3 December at the Hammersmith Odeon, and as you will hear, Annie Lennox does say "this is the last night of the Touch tour" which would suggest the recording is from the 3 December, so that's what I've gone with.

What Was Done
Fortunately only a couple of dropouts and a bad edit needed fixing before I got to work - the applause after Who's That Girl? is chopped off suddenly (someone turning the tape over, I suspect!) and the beginning of "I Could Give You (A Mirror)" is similarly truncated, so I blended those together so the recording flows better. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall. The result is really really nice; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

The All Important Download Link
You can now download or stream this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show as one 320kbps MP3 file exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE.

Setlist
Intro
The First Cut
Never Gonna Cry Again
This Is the House
Here Comes the Rain Again
Regrets
The Walk
This City Never Sleeps
Who's That Girl?
I Could Give You (A Mirror)
Take Me to Your Heart
Cool Blue
Love Is a Stranger
Somebody Told Me
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
Right by Your Side
Wrap It Up
Jennifer

Supporting The Site

Firstly - there's another, earlier Eurythmics show on the site, so make sure you check out that one as well if you haven't already.

If you want to support the work I do on these recordings, and the site, and (if you wish to) obtain separate, fully tagged 320kbps MP3s of this restoration for less than the price of a coffee in return, or lossless FLACs or even a lossless copy on CDR, head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs. The file was labeled as a soundboard but given the existing production on it I'm guessing it was done by a radio station as it was pretty well mixed (mostly, anyway), just dull sounding. Some tracks also appeared on a King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast too, which backs that up. This is from their first tour of Canada and North America - and what better way to start your set in the USA than with...I'm So Bored With The USA!

What Was Done

The usual listen through fixing odd gaps and dropouts and parts where the sound changes noticeably - it went very dull in the first song for about 30 seconds, for example, and there were a few dropouts through the set I fixed. It also sounded like the recording was made up of several recordings cut together - a couple of occasions where applause after a song is cut off and then jumps back in with the next song already starting, and the subsequent songs sound quality was different! So I blended and tweaked those to fit seamlessly together as much as possible. There's one song where guitar appears on the right, very over cooked and loud; I took that down as much as possible. Recording levels in places are a little hot but nothing bad enough to detract from making this available. I then got to work with EQ, compression and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and clearer, more powerful.

The All Important Download Link

You can now download or stream this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show as one 320kbps MP3 file exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE.

Setlist
I'm So Bored With The USA
Drug Stabbing Time
Jail Guitar Doors
Tommy Gun
City Of The Dead
Hate And War
White Man In Hammersmith Palais
Safe European Home
Stay Free
English Civil War
Guns On The Roof
Police And Thieves
Capital Radio
Janie Jones
Garageland
Julie's Been Working For The Drug Squad
Londons Burning
White Riot
Complete Control
What's My Name
Supporting The Site

If

debut on the site for New Order. This was
a soundboard recording from their US tour and was in good shape overall apart from the kick drum being overloaded. It was also sounding a bit flat, lifeless and dry as most soundboards do.

What Was Done

Noise reduction was done, a few pops removed and the occasional loss in volume in places. Once that was done I got to work with EQ, compression and the usual
studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and just...well make
everything much clearer, more powerful and generally more LIVE
sounding, with more separation. The original sounded like it had been worked on at some point but the kick drums all the way through were overloaded and a bit distorted, so I dialled that back too. The final result sounds far more balanced now (and less likely to give you a headache). I also improved the stereo imaging a bit during the mastering process.

The All Important Download Link

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE and grabbing it as one 320kbps MP3 file.

Setlist

Your Silent Face
Love Vigilantes
Confusion
Sunrise
As It Is When It Was
Sooner Than You Think
5 8 6
The Village
Ceremony
Age Of Consent
The Perfect Kiss

Encore
Blue Monday
Sister Ray

Supporting The Site

If

debut on the site for Toyah. This was
excerpts from a show originally broadcast on Radio Clyde here in Scotland and was a basically sound but fairly flat and muddy cassette recording once upon a time.

What Was Done

The volume levels were a bit uneven in places so I fixed that. Also some tape dropouts (where the sound disappears on either the left or right channel). There was quite a bit of FM noise in places - that has either gone or been substantially reduced. The recording stopped after We Are and then came back in with a radio announcer at the start of I Wanna Be Free - We Are now fades at the end and then back in for Free - I left in the radio announcer as it was very brief.

Once all that was done I got to work with EQ, compression and the usual
studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and just...well make everything much clearer, more powerful and generally...well, more LIVE sounding. This is a great alternative to the Warrior Rock live album that was recorded at Hammersmith that year.

The All Important Download Link

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE and grabbing it as one 320kbps MP3 file.

Setlist

Good Morning Universe
Brave New World
Thunder In The Mountains
It's A Mystery
The Angel And Me
We Are
I Wanna Be Free.

Encore
War Boys

2nd Encore
Ieya

Supporting The Site

If

This was a fairly murky audience recording of the whole gig, recorded from quite far back, submitted by a listener and I was asked if I could do anything with it. I get quite a few requests like that but don't often think they're suitable for the website - but I haven't found any other Runrig recordings and this is a great live show, showcasing what a great live act they were, as well as just lively a Scottish crowd can be! So - I gave it a go.

What Was Done

There were a few sections where the volume dropped quite a bit, so those got leveled out, and also one spot where the tape was presumably flipped over - this had been edited by somebody already but I fiexed it so it fades out and back in more smoothly. I also removed a particularly LOUD bit of feed back at one point (my ears are still suffering a bit from that one!).

Otherwise, in the main it was the usual with audience recordings - remove some of the venue ambience to bring back more of the band (but without making it sound unnatural), then get to work with EQ, compression and the usual
studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, bring out the drums, clear up the muddy sound as best I could, and make the vocals clearer. This is still very much an audience recording but I think it's far more listenable now. As often happens, the sound mix gets clearer after the first couple of songs or so.

The All Important Download Link

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE and grabbing it as one 320kbps MP3 file.

Setlist

Intro Tape
The Cutter
Protect and Survive
Lifeline
Hearts Of Olden Glory
Dance Called America
Rocket To The Moon
Our Earth Was Once Green
Cnoc Na Feille
The Only Rose
Tuireadh Iain Ruaidh
Alba
Pride Of The Summer/The Twenty Five Pounder/An Toll Dubh/Nightfall On Marsco
Skye
Loch Lomond
Dust
What Time?

Supporting The Site

If you want to support the work I do,

This was their full live set supporting The Stranglers and Simple Minds - to what sounds like a rapturous reception, it has to be said. Broadcast live on FM radio at the time, this recording was supplied to me by a listener to Live and Loud! Shows. Being live it includes the moment when the power cuts out, bringing 1 song to a very quick close! However, kudos is definitely due in the way the band dealt with that and straight away went into something else.

What Was Done

There were a huge number of tiny gaps in the audio, especially in the first half of the gig - tape dropouts perhaps, which took a long long time to smooth out and I've fixed as many of them as possible - there are some left I couldn't fix - mainly in the first song or 2.

Every song on the source faded out during the applause after and the joins back in to the next song were often disjointed - I fixed all those so the songs fade out and back in much more smoothly. After that, I lowered the pitch and speed a little as it all ran a bit fast and breathless (and a little high pitched). Then the nitty gritty parts - EQ, compression, the usual studio toys to improve the sound mix and create space for the bass, drums, vocals and synth parts. There wasn't a lot of bass end, so I fattened that a bit, so the kick drums and bass are far more solid now, and the original recording had quite a lot of top end, so I rounded that off so it doesn't hurt the ears. So yes, this one took a while.

The All Important Download Link

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE and grabbing it as one 320kbps MP3 file.

If

some bottom end, and bringing
more clarity and life, adding some space between the instruments before final
mastering.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3

This was a very good audience recording, which responded well to some studio toys to clean up the sound, make it clearer and give it a bit more "oomph". All the drums, bass, guitar and synths are rather clearer now.

There are a few cuts in the recording and 2 small ones remain which I couldn't fix - during Berserker, the recording skips a couple of seconds during Karen Taylor's solo vocal part way through, and the intro and first note of Down In The Park was missing altogether, so rather than have it jump in loudly, I faded it in with the cheering after the previous song. Taken from their first national tour (after supporting the Banshees on theirs just a few months earlier) this audience recording came to me as a .wav file from a fan - a regular listener to Live and Loud! Shows, who asked if I could improve it.

It was very toppy, thin and boxy sounding - very little in the bass end and a lot in the mids and high end. After removing some of the reverb from the recording to bring back more music signal to work on, I removed tape noise and repaired where the tape stopped (and turned over, I imagine!) at the end of 1 song so that song fades nicely into the start of the next. Then repaired some odd clicks and noises and the odd tape dropout. Only then did I get to work on the sound and enhance what bass there was, buried away, while trying to bring more clarity and weight to the sound as a whole.

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE and grabbing it as one 320kbps MP3 file.

If you're new to the site, please have a look at the list of artists covered and grab what you like! This is actually 2 recordings. Most is from an audience recording, but parts of the gig were broadcast on FM radio. Someone at some point stuck them together to make the whole gig but there were overlapping bits. And teh sound quality wasn't very good. So I've done my best to clean up the recordings, and then blend them together.

Noise, tape dropouts, uneven levels and finally very muddy sound quality all got tackled. The final part was splitting up the tracks, removing overlapping parts and blending everything back together. And then mastering the whole thing. As often happens, the first track is probably the worst sounding but after that it improves considerably.

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.

If you would like to support what I do, and this site, and obtain separate, fully tagged 320kbps MP3s or lossless FLACs of the restoration, head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs. This was their debut gig in the USA in 1984; they started their support of Ministry on their "Wax Trax Singles Tour" the very next day in Trenton, New Jersey. The venue, Medusa's, was a "juice bar" (ie no alcohol served) for teens in Chicago which closed down long ago.

Taken from the mixing desk, this recording was donated to the site by a regular listener, who asked if there was any way it could be improved. It required a lot of work - breaks in the sound (some quite long ones), there were tape errors typical of old recordings, lots of noise, hiss...the original tape must have been in the wars a bit! So a good candidate for restoration even before actually trying to make it sound clearer.

So I set to work fixing tape dropouts, correcting the stereo image where possible (their live mixing was pretty extreme moving things left and right, so much of that also needed preserving, while fixing the tape errors), removing as much noise and hiss as possible, then finally cleaning up the muddy sound with EQ and other tools, and remastering.

The result is far clearer and more listenable - to quote the person who donated the original: "I know it was pretty rough in spots (especially that first song), but you did an outstanding job". I am indebted to the same guy for taking the time to write me a short biog of the band which has proved invaluable in writing this page and my intro to the show. Thank you!

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file. Don't steal and take the credit. Thanks.

At the beginning of 1976 Kraftwerk played a few shows in Europe before doing a full tour in the Autumn. This is a recording of one of those early 1976 shows.

This show has appeared on bootlegs in various forms over the years - not all of which even had all the tracks played. Some also had radio announcers talking over them. There is at least 1 unrestored "complete" version out there with a different tracklisting, with the songs in a different order (the latter is also on YouTube, so some of you may well be familiar with that version already. It doesn't have the correct song titles either).

This restored and remastered version is complete, has no radio announcers and has some songs in a different order. And below, you will find the correct titles. Taken from the mixing desk for use on later radio broadcasts, this came to me from a collector in Germany. With this setlist order. Having compared this to the OTHER "complete" version, I think this one is more likely to be correct. There is applause at the beginning of the gig, and after each song played - as it should be. That doesn't happen on the other version. This setlist order also seems to flow far better, to me. If you disagree, that's ok. But until Herr Hutter tells me the actual setlist running order, I'll go with this one.

Annoyingly, someone has updated this gig on setlist.fm with the bootleg's running order, so that's no help either.

Anyway, I put the setlist as I see it. Incidentally, on the bootlegs Die Sonne, Der Monde, Die Sterne is mentioned - but the track is not that one; it's more like a vocoder jam more closely resembling the "Pulsar und Quasar" section of Radio Stars, so that's what I listed it as.

The original recording was often very quiet. After repairing a few clicks and minor faults, I remastered this so the volume is more consistent. This makes the synths really far more audible. I also EQed so the electronic percussion could be heard far better. And the crowd noise on the bootleg sometimes sounded edited and also too loud at times. So I've had a go at that too, to try and make it all sound a bit more natural.

The result is the best ever quality for this rare gig recording in my humble opinion. You can now download the repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for free, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.

If you would like to support what I do, and this site, and obtain separate, fully tagged 320kbps MP3s or lossless FLACs of the restoration, head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs. Absolutely no obligation to do so of course - you can take the file on this page absolutely for free - but every single donation does go towards this site and domain/storage costs, and helps the site stay open.

Either way, enjoy the show! And if you like this recording, PLEASE spread the news and share the page link to anyone you think might be interested - facebook fan groups, web forums, Twitter and Instagram are a great way of spreading the word - that way, I always find out which bands are popular and can do more shows by them in the future. Many thanks.

And finally... don't forget to SUBSCRIBE TO THE NEW FREE NEWSLETTER

Part of restoring this show involved increasing the volume of large parts of the recording that were very quiet. As a result of this you can now hear Ralf Hutter occasionally speaking to the crowd in French during the gig. Well, Nicolas, a member of the Kraftwerk Facebook group, translated what Ralf is saying; with his kind permission, I repeat that here:

"Before playing Airwaves, Ralf says: "We are going to play a song to discover the Martenot waves".
