Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.
Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years. Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.
Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.
All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!
If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.
And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music. There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).
For years now, all my links have been shortened with the bit.ly url shortening service. However, it seems they have introduced popups which are causing some users issues when clicking on my links, especially if they (quite sensibly!) have a pop up blocker installed.
So all new links starting in 2026 will not be using bit.ly anymore. And all old links will be amended - but with over 200 shows to do, this will take some time. But I do try and focus on all the shows here always being available and pay for that to happen, so this kind of thing just gets in the way.
If anyone has any issues in the meantime, please contact me.

See you all in 2026!
Jan 2026 update - so far all gigs posted in 2025 and 2024 have had the bit.ly shortening removed, so should download or stream seamlessly for all. Lots more to be done of course. Any issues, please let me know. Cheers.
Hi all.
It's just been brought to my attention that some of the links are not working. It seems something has happened with the bit.ly link shortening URLs. I'll get to the bottom of it asap and if necessary create new links. It's rather annoying as the files are all available on the cloud servers...
In the meantime, if a link to a gig you're after isn't working, do please let me know. Cheers!
Edited to add... It seems the bit.ly SOMETIMES seem to generate their own pop up message window asking you to accept or refuse permissions, while also showing the stream or download link. So you should be able to ignore it and just download or stream as normal! HOWEVER, if you have a pop up blocker it may stop the link working, so you will have to add an exception or disable it temporarily. Users of the Brave browser (which inherently blocks pop ups) may have to use another browser, perhaps.

the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.
The Show A live event performed under the Eiffel Tower in Paris, to celebrate the 50 anniversary of the United Nations. Some time ago I was sent a slightly edited recording of this gig but it was on MP3. Recently I found the audio ripped from the original Laserdisc release of this, way back when. Still in relatively good condition but fairly flat. Drums and bass were low in the mix, and synths lacked any power at all really; very little low end existed. But this is the full released recording, long deleted of course, including JMJ's short speech before the last track.
What Was Done For once, very little repair work. Only crossfading side one and side 2 to form 1 complete recording really. So an easy job then?! Well... No. I worked on the sound to improve the bottom end, bring back the bass and kick drum, make the synth pads (on Industrial Revolution, for example) powerful, so you could feel them, cleared the mix a bit to make it clearerbut elements more powerful, then mastered.
And the next day listened to it, didn't like it, so then mastered it again...
And then a couple of days later came back to it and AGAIN didn't like it, so mastered it a 3rd time!
This one I'm happy with. It's clearer, more powerful and sounds now more like a live concert. So turn it up, slap on a pair of decent headphones or play it through good speakers, and enjoy.

The Show An
audience recording from the time, sent to me by a listener to the site. Vangelis live recordings are not very common but this wasn't very good quality and while I always intended to try and restore it for the website, I tried once or twice before and put it away again for another day. Until last week when I pulled it out again and finally found a way to make it sound much better.
What Was Done The original was very toppy - everything sounded thin with lots of harsh treble and no lower end. It was also, of course, mono. And being a transfer from an old tape there were various dropouts. And when anyone in the crowd nearby spoke or cheered, well that was very loud indeed.
So - dropouts fixed, a limiter used on several areas where the audience were a little excited, and I even removed a cough or audience speech here and there. Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed
that too. Once that was done, noise reduction and some mains hum was removed - and then out came the EQ and the usual studio toys to bring back some low end, stop the "tinny" sounds, make everything sound clearer, and then mastered to make it clearer still, and more
powerful overall, and a lot wider, without making it sound "weird". The result is far far better and I think now you can sit down with this on headphones and enjoy it.

The Show An
audience recording from the time but a very clear one. This show was the last of 4 shows Kraftwerk did in the USA in April 2008 - the first shows they performed without founder member Florian Schneider, who's departure wouldn't be confirmed until the following year.
What Was Done The recording was mostly in good condition, although the volume was a bit up and down and there's a short section of TEE which sounds quite different to the rest - I guess someone put their jacket over the mic or something. I tried to compensate for that but you can still probably hear it. There was also some audible low rumble noticeable between songs - I removed that. Otherwise, once all that was fixed it was EQ and the usual studio toys to beef up the sound, clean up the mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall, and wider. The result is quite a big difference from the original and sounds really good - it's an interesting set..

The Show Billed as a soundboard recording and released as a bootleg CD at some point - and I assume on vinyl too, as there was vinyl noise on the recording I had. Bizarrely the CD track listing was in the wrong order, after the first 5 tracks.
What Was Done As always when I pick a show thinking "this won't take long..." it takes far longer! I researched the gig and found the actual setlist online in a couple of different places, which showed the song order on what I had was very wrong! So I took it all apart and put the songs back in the right order, blending in the audience noise between songs, which actually sounds less disjointed now than it did on the source material. There were some clicks and pops from vinyl to get rid of, and some vinyl crackle which I've been able to reduce a lot.
Once that was
done, the recording was fairly flat (as boots so often are) but I knoew it would polish up well, so I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity and power to the sound mix, and then mastered. The result is really really clear and powerful - showcasing how good a live band they are and certainly were in 1983; I'm sure
you'll enjoy it.
Once you've downloaded or streamed this, head down to the bottom of the page - highlights of this gig were broadcast on TV back in 1983, and that's on YouTube, albeit in inferior sound quality.

As promised above, highlights of the gig were broadcast on TV back in 1983 so here's a link to that. Not all songs are included but you do get a few cut ins with the band members being interviewed. The Show A recording of The Birthday Party during their first tour of Australia under that name. This recording was originally a digital copy of a recording from 2JJ FM radio from the time and was passed to me by a listener to the website.
What Was Done There
were a few dropouts and spots where the audience noise calling for an encore were cut and spliced - I fixed all those and got to work on the sound. It was a mono FM recording and sounded pretty muddy but with not too much damage. I got to work with EQ and the usual things I use to bring a lot more clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall, and a bit wider. The result is much clearer, powerful and more listenable.

The Show An FM broadcast from Radio Clyde. This one was from a cassette I bought in the 80s - probably on Camden Market in London - I used to get loads from there at that time. I transferred it to digital, then cleaned it up and got to work. As often with radio broadcasts from the time, it was a rather dry and thin mix but at least the tape was in decent condition still.
What Was Done A few tape dropouts and glitches were fixed, tape noise reduced and the gig was in 2 halves either side of a radio announcer and adverts, so I edited as much of that out as possible and merged in the rest. Once that was
done, I got to work with EQ etc and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity and live muscle to the sound mix, and then mastered. The result is really clear; I'm sure
you'll enjoy it. There's another Warriors tour FM recording on the site featuring quite a few different tracks, so don't miss that one.

The Show An
audience recording from the time. It sounded very much like someone had "remastered" it into fake stereo with most of the bass taken away (which often happens when people do this). Other than that, it was in pretty good condition.
What Was Done As with all audience recordings, I removed some of the venue reverb "ambience" from the recording to leave more of the band's sound for me to work on. There was a brief cut at the end of 1 song which I smoothed over. Once that was
done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring back some of the lost low end, tame the high end so it wasn't as harsh and "tinny", bring back some
clarity to the guitars, bass and drums so they're a bit more audible and powerful, made the vocals a little bit louder, then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall, and not so artificially wide. Once the master was complete, that process had inevitably increased some of the recorded mains hum from the PA, so where it's most audible (in between songs) I finished off by going into those parts of the gig, 1 by 1 and reducing that with a notch filter.
It's a great set, they were a great, tight band - totally not what you'd expect from a "punk band" - The Ruts were clearly more than that. I hope this restored set does them some justice!

And finally...
As many fans of music from this period will know, singer Malcolm Owen died just a few months after this gig, and in 2007 Paul Fox - the incredible guitarist you can hear on this recording - also passed away from lung cancer. Just 3 months before he died, The Ruts reformed for a short set, with Henry Rollins on vocal duties. It's a great set, not to mention very moving, given they all knew what was going to happen by then - a hell of a way to bow out. Inevitably that's now on YouTube so I thought I'd link to it here:

The Show According to the notes with the source files, this was a soundboard recording but does sound more like a radio broadcast to me. This came to me as MP3s of a show that someone had worked on (it was all VERY LOUD, which tends to be a giveaway). This at least is in stereo - this show was also broadcast on TV in Germany - a video of that s on YouTube with a mono soundtrack and is well worth a watch (a link to that at the bottom of this page).
What Was Done As always, to start with everything got saved in 1 large lossless .wav file for me to start work on. I think the recording I had access to had originally been a vinyl bootleg - there was a fair bit of surface noise and crackle which I tried to remove first. Most of it is gone now - there's still a little on the first track. I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring more clarity and punch to the sound mix. I also had to deal with a fair amount of sibilance and tamed most of that, and then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall, and a bit wider. The result is a really really good record of the band at that time; I'm sure
you'll enjoy it. There is a very brief skip in Watch Me Bleed which you might notice - there wasn't much I could do about that.

The Show Recorded originally by Australian radio station JJJ, it was clear someone had worked on this at some point - the volume was maxed out right across the recording, which is a common mistake. The last track, Room was from a totally different recording and added on the end, after everything had faded out. Every internet source I could find tells me it IS the performance of Room from that show, though, so it stayed. The band seemed to have sound issues especially early on during the first song, so you will still hear evidence of that.
An extra bit of background to this show from a listener: I was at this show. The Musicians Club isn't a very big venue and the crowd waiting to get in was massive!!!. Hundreds were turned away. There was a heat wave and the place was like an oven, but an amazing show. Simple Minds were really popular in Australia. They returned the following year and played in a place called Manly, in a much bigger venue. That show also went live to air on 2 JJJ.
What Was Done It was rather hard on the ears and muddy and muffled. Still much better than many but definitely improvable. Several gaps and dropouts fixed. Once that was
done, I got to work with the usual studio toys to clean up the recording and make it clearer, then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall. The last track had to be worked on separately and I blended that in with the crowd noise at the end of the main set, so it sounds less "added on". The gig sounds really good now I think; I'm sure
you'll enjoy it.

The Show Not sure where I got the lossless files of this from but there's a nice story to how this recording ended up in the public domain - you can read about that and find out more about the gig HERE. You can also find a link on there to listen to the original (albeit on YouTube), so you can compare it to this one if you like. Essentially this was a soundboard recording, with a small part of an audience recording spliced in to cover a gap where the tape stopped. It sounded pretty good - someone did a good job putting the original together, so kudos to them - but I knew I could fix a few things and make it sound better.
What Was Done Going back to my notes - dropouts here and there were fixed, some pops - especially mic pops later on in the gig. Some rustling noise on 1 channel at 1 point. Part of 1 song was missing where there was a cut or maybe a skip in the digital transfer. I fixed that so unless you know this gig intimately, you won't be able to tell. Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed
that. Where the audience tape was spliced in and out wasn't quite in time with the rest of the recording so I edited that too. The mix had the drums slightly more over 1 side than the other so I brought that back to sound more balanced. So yeah, quite a lot.
Once all that was
done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall. The result sounds great, I think really powerful; I'm sure
you'll enjoy it.

The Show Someone back in 1984 had the idea to record this live off their FM radio - it was apparently a live broadcast and not pre-recorded, or broadcast later. And years later that tape was digitised and put on the web - can't remember where I found it but it was some years back. This is nothing like the Berlin most people have heard (that Top Gun song, which they had nothing to do with, for example) - this is far more early 80s new wave/synth stuff, with a few tracks showing a definite hint of Giorgio Moroder in there. If you don't know Berlin but like The Cars, Devo etc, you might well find something to like here.
What Was Done Happily it was in basically sound condition but very very flat and muffled. I removed a couple of odd noises and some low end hum but most of the work was just making the whole thing sound so much clearer. Once that was done, mastering took it to another level and made it more
powerful overall. The result is really really good - clear and powerful.

The Show It's been almost 3 years since I last did a DM show. I've done many others but this is the latest I've done in their long history, and dates from their first tour after Alan Wilder left. They were headlining KROQ's 9th annual "Almost" Acoustic Christmas Show in Los Angeles, towards the end of their tour. The text file with this described it as a very good soundboard recording. And so it was, although rather dull and muffled sounding with very little in the way of dynamics.
What Was Done Azimuth adjusted, a tape dropout fixed but then it was straight to EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity and space back to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall. The performance was already good - the sound now is far more impressive and powerful and does the band justice. Turn the sound up, you are in for a treat! And watch out for the encore, which features Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins.

The Show A stereo
FM broadcast from the time, released onto the internet by the original taper (at least according to the notes). Featuring tracks from his debut album No Parlez as well as a couple of rarities, this is a great performance. Thanks to him (or her) for making this available. It's not as short a show as it looks - the set does last about 1 hour, with the last track being 12 minutes of the band flexing their musical muscles - well worth a listen.
What Was Done A big click on the intro was removed, some mains hum and then a small tape drop out. Once that was
done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some
clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more
powerful overall, and wider. The result is clearer, more punchy and more solid; I'm sure
you'll enjoy it.

The Show The text file with the CD rip I received suggested this was a soundboard recording but I think this is far more likely to be a stereo FM broadcast. In any case, it's the full show from the only UK date of Bowie's tour of festivals around Europe in the Summer of 1996; a tour that featured a slimmed down version of the band he had played the 1.Outside tour with a few months earlier.
What Was Done There were a few clicks to remove but the biggest fault was a gap in
the sound at 1 point (with a small bit of music missing). All I could really do was
fade that out and cross back in so it doesn't disturb your listening
anything like as much.
Once that was
done, I got to work on what was a rather flat recording - EQ and the usual studio toys really improved the sound a lot - you can really hear everything going on now. Finally, I mastered it to make it clearer and more
powerful. The result is really really excellent - both Bowie and the band are on top form; this is a great gig.

The Show An
audience recording from the time. Originally edited to fit on 2 CDs which has meant some noticeable cuts - the largest one being Waterloo is almost completely gone from the recording and fades out not long after it starts. Fernando has a noticeable "jump" cut at 1 point too, not sure why. A few audience recordings have emerged in recent years - this was the best to work on, despite being recorded from quite far back in the hall. Apart from the cuts, this is the full show.
What Was Done Several glitches in the recording throughout (originally tape dropouts I think) were fixed. There
was a noticeable "jump" cut in Hole In Your Soul - I edited that so it wasn't as jarring. I also tidied up the gap between Fernando and The Name of The Game (the latter was originally the start of CD2). I then removed some of the room ambience from the recording to give me more of the band sound to work on, then got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring back some
clarity to the sound mix. Once that was all done I then mastered to bring up the vocals a bit, make everything clearer still, more
powerful and "wider". The result is a big improvement, I think; I hope fans of ABBA enjoy it.

The Show This is a fairly muffled and "distant" mono audience recording of the first night of the "Art of Parties" tour of the UK in May 1981, featuring the first live appearance of their new single at the time - The Art Of Parties. It was sent to me by a listener, asking if it could be cleaned up. I was initially dubious (quality really wasn't too good) but after sending him a free sample of 1 of the tracks done, this was then done as a private commission. My client was so pleased with the final result he offered it for the website as well, so that others could enjoy it! So here it is.
What Was Done The recording was, like many old audience recordings, muffled and sounding quite far away, with a few odd cuts and gaps here and there. Quite a bit of feedback in places too.
All those gaps and cuts were removed and blended, so the recording is whole again. Feedback I was able to remove for the most part. A big part of the hall ambience was then reduced, which gave me more of the band sound to work on. I could then get to work with EQ and my box of studio tools to make the band clearer and far more audible. Once that was done, I mastered the whole thing to give the recording some power and width.
The result is a big improvement. I hope fans of the band will enjoy it as much as my client has.

The Show A stereo recording from the mixing desk (mostly!) of the first of several groundbreaking gigs played in Argentina. This has appeared in various bootleg issues over the years of various lengths (the venue is also known as the Vélez Sarsfield Stadium, after the football team that plays there). I came across a copy of the most complete version of the gig. One track (Get Down Make Love) - and the outro of God Save The Queen weren't on the original stereo recording but recordings of those from the night taken from a mono AM radio broadcast (with a rather excitable radio announcer!) were mixed in at a later date to make up the complete gig.
What Was Done The recording (the stereo parts anyway) was basically in OK shape although muffled and not very clear - not much bottom or top end; the bits from AM radio were plagued by AM radio interference. Plus of course the AM tracks (in mono) sound very very different to the rest of the gig.
After listening to the whole recording, I split apart the stereo and mono parts so I could work on them separately. The AM radio parts had the buzzing interference reduced as much as I could without affecting the overall sound, and the sound then improved and mastered, making them wider to more closely blend with the stereo recording. The stereo parts were worked on to bring more clarity and impact to the sound mix - all instruments and voices can now be heard much clearer - before mastering and then blending the stereo and mono parts back together.
The result is a big improvement I think and deserves to be played loud; I'm really pleased with this one and I'm sure
you'll enjoy it!
