Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 209 - Jean Michel Jarre - Live In Houston Texas - 5 April 1986

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
I spent months (actually years, on and off) looking for a recording of this broadcast and only came across very low bit rate MP3s, or a recording that sounded like the FM Tuner wasn’t 100% tuned in correctly when the recording was made. Recently however, I swapped some files with a collector and finally had a half way decent recording of the broadcast.

What Was Done
It was in stereo, which was a good start. But the sound quality was variable; I am sure someone at some point had tried to work on this - it may well be more than 1 recording that’s been used to make the source I received as the sound varied a few times throughout. Several days of work then ensued - the usual tape dropouts and odd clicks, really loud tape noise in places, gaps, random volume drops on just the left or right channel and the quality of the sound also changing several times… All eventually sorted, as best I can. There were also a few seconds missing during Rendez-Vous 2 - I ended up fading that out and back in, so it was less jarring.

Once all the repair work was done, I worked on the sound quality and then mastered it (to cut a long story short!). And then after mastering I still tweaked it a little more. Normally I remove radio voiceovers where I can but this time I left in the original intro, just for a bit of "history". Anyone local to Houston around that time may well recognise the voice.

This one has taken quite a while - but I think it was worth it. Unless someone has a great quality recording they're keeping to themselves, I think this will be the best available anywhere. I hope you enjoy it!

Special Restoration - Jean Michel Jarre - Dorian Ballet Soundtrack - 1973

The Music

Some unreleased music lasting just over 11 minutes, from a 1973 ballet soundtrack by Jean Michel Jarre that was recorded for French television. Someone posted a link on a JMJ Facebook group to a video of the ballet, based on Oscar Wilde's The Face of Dorian Gray on YouTube this week - this seems to be the first time many have come across the music - much of which seems to be versions of music from Jarre's first 2 albums - Deserted Palace and Les Granges Brulees - used only for this production, along with some that seems to be unheard before.

Given the rarity of this music and not having heard it before, I naturally wanted to  improve it for my own listening pleasure - and have made this available for free to anyone else to enjoy too.

You can watch the original ballet recording here:-

What Was Done
The broadcast was from French television in 1973, so of course was in mono. I worked with EQ, compression and the usual studio and mastering toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and managed to bring out some things that were very difficult to hear, and also bring in more separation and a wider listening image - not quite stereo of course but for me a more pleasant listen; I've made the audio sound a little wider without losing quality or clarity, and without making it sound gimmicky.

The All Important Download Link

You can now download this restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE and grabbing it as one 320kbps MP3 file. You can also preview it by streaming from the same link.

Tracklisting

5 tracks with no known titles, although track 2 is based on La Cage, and track 3 is based on a previously released rarity called Black Bird.

Supporting The Site

If you want to support the work I do head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see what you can obtain for a very small donation towards the site costs, or just click on the Ko-fi link at the top of the page.

Bearing in mind how short this soundtrack is, and that the original audio came from YouTube (and so had compressed audio), I haven't bothered to prepare separated MP3 or FLAC versions of this recording. There is no obligation to donate of course - you can take the file on this page absolutely for free - but every single donation does go towards this site and domain/storage costs, and helps the site stay open, and helps me do more (and store more) restorations. Either way, I hope you enjoy this one.

At the very least, if you haven't already - please check out the restorations of Jean Michel Jarre live recordings elsewhere on the site.

Show 173: Jean Michel Jarre - Docklands London - 8 October 1988

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't steal and take the credit. Thanks.

There are several recordings of Jean Michel Jarre at Docklands - including an official release including excerpts of the concert, with edited tracks. There are also 2 different FM radio recordings I know of - both have very strange sound mixes with delay and so on - I can only assume this was an anti piracy measure at the time. Both would be fairly pointless trying to improve. But a listener to Live and Loud! also sent me an audience recording on CD, which he kindly sent to me for appraisal.

It sounded as you might expect a cassette recording at a large outdoor event might sound! Rather thin, overly bright at times, muffled at other times; the music levels were up and down, crowd noise and fireworks sometimes overtaking the music, wind noise. Lots of wind noise. Consequently I spent the longest time I've ever taken on a restoration, splitting the work over several months. Removing booming wind noise alone was a painstaking (and rather boring) manual process that took many hours - but was worth doing as it was very intrusive. It's not gone completely in places but you will not hear 95% of it and now get far more of the music.

Another thing I noticed in the original recording, which I'd forgotten when I attended the gig myself - there were long pauses sometimes between tracks. So I spared you 6.5 minutes altogether of audience noise and chatter taken from between tracks. Again, not gone completely - it just helps the concert flow better I think. Hopefully you won't always spot the edits!

For an outdoor audience recording I think this one has come up really well; I hope you enjoy it. But bear in mind with such variable sound quality, some tracks inevitably sound clearer now than others - sometimes the fireworks still get in the way and there are a couple of distorted drum hits during Ethnicolor which couldn't be fully fixed -  but it is still a good improvement over the original recording I started with and well worth your time.

So sit back, turn it up...and if you want to recreate the wet and windy 2nd night instead, turn a desk fan on while spraying water onto your face. Job done. ;-)

Show 119 - Jean Michel Jarre - Live in Lyon - 5 October 1986

This is a concert from 1986, as part of Lyon's celebrations welcoming Pope John Paul II to the city. I wonder what he thought of it! Anyway, the recording... This concert was actually released on VHS at the time but this recording I've uploaded for you is actually taken from 2 separate recordings of FM broadcasts - both of which were incomplete. I won't tell you where the join is, but hopefully it's not too easy to spot now!

But there was a lot of work - both recordings were at different speeds, for a start...and sounded quite different. Only when they were at the same speed and sounding similar, could I put them together, then start denoising what was quite a hissy recording, repairing inconsistencies in volume, then using the trusty 30 band EQ to remove a harsh top end and bring back the lower end, which was quite lacking (except on some "far too loud!" Simmons drum fills in various tracks which needed treating all by themselves). This was all a lot of work but I think it was worth it. So I hope you enjoy it too!

Incidentally, no setlist anywhere makes mention of Second Rendez-Vous Part 3 making a reappearance at the end of the show on the night - but it existed on the recording I was given. I suspect it may not be from Lyon at all, as it cuts in rather sharply. It doesn't sound too out of place, so I left it in. Also, Jarre introduces his musicians over the encore and the music goes very quiet (how it was broadcast at the time I expect) and the FM noise and hiss gets quite bad at that point. I removed a lot of it, but left some as Jarre was in danger of sounding like he was speaking from the bottom of the sea...

Anyway, enough of my yakking... You can download this new and improved (and hopefully unique) recording for free here as 1 320kps MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to support the site with a very small donation and in return receive separate, properly tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can do this. Either way - enjoy the show!

Show 89: Jean Michel Jarre - La Defense Paris - 14 July 1990

In 1990, Jean Michel Jarre released his 10th studio album, Waiting For Cousteau, dedicated to marine conservationist Jacques Cousteau, on Cousteau’s 80th birthday on 11 June. A month later he promoted the album with a huge live event in Paris, on Bastille Day. Backed by many of his usual collaborators on synthesisers and drums, he was joined by a steel band, a choir and enormous marionettes alongside the usual extravagant light show. The show was watched by an estimated 2.5 million people live in the city, setting a new record.

The original copy of the FM broadcast I had given to me (thank you, you know who you are!) was quite thin and compressed but with some patient EQ and fixing a couple of defects, now sounds far better, if not entirely compression free.

In the 1990s a VHS video was issued of this show but that had tracks missing; this recording does have all tracks present. Incidentally, in common with other French broadcast recordings I have, they do like to talk in between tracks! So you will hear the odd spoken link in between tracks, as well as at the end of the recording before M. Jarre says his final farewell.

The show is now available to download exclusively for free here as 1 MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.

Show 30: Jean Michel Jarre - Live at Pyramids of Giza, Egypt - 31 December 1999

A concert by Jean Michel Jarre, which went by the name of The Twelve Dreams Of The Sun, and performed at the Pyramids of Giza, Egypt; starting on 31 December 1999 and carrying overnight into the new millennium, attended by 120,000 people and broadcast to TV stations around the world.

The concert consisted of two parts, the Main Concert and a Sunrise Concert performed the next morning, and came about when Jarre was contacted by the Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak with a special project to celebrate the dawn of the new Millennium at the foot of the only remaining monument of the original 7 Wonders of the World - the Great Pyramids.

It's the main concert presented here. Originally remastered in 2013, it was only after over 400 downloads (!) someone spotted that Souvenir of China was missing! So I checked and sure enough... My error from when I was blending the 39 separate track files together - 1 got missed off! I don't like making mistakes, so...

I went back to the original files and did it all again. All 39 files blended to 1 file, then carefully EQed and remastered once again. The original recording is in mono, so this time I took the opportunity to do a better simulated stereo remaster as well. So now you have a choice, you can have it in unwidened mono, or you can have the "stereo" version which I think sounds better. Or...you can download both!

November 2016 Complete Remaster Simulated Stereo

Both are available as 1 MP3 file.
