Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 200 - Gary Numan - Live At Metro, Chicago - 11 May 1998

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
This is a rare show - recordings of the Exile Tour are not common. I am indebted to a friend of mine who was at the show and recorded it to DAT - the first time he had snuck a recorder into a show. He did a great job!

What Was Done

The original recording was wiped many years ago - the only copy of this gig was on MP3. First thing I did when I approached this one (as I always do if I can only find MP3 copies) is to save it as a lossless WAV file for editing, so all the edits were saved losslessly, and no further degradation can take place. Indeed, unless you have super human hearing (or analyse waveforms to an unhealthy degree) you would never know now

As with all audience recordings I do, I removed some of the hall ambience, then spent much time improving the sound quality - basically making the band clearer, the drums more distinct, Gary's voice clearer - before mastering it. As my friend who taped it said yesterday “I just listened…Simply outstanding! The sound is very crisp and bright. I feel like I was actually at the show itself when I listened to it...and I was there”. This is a great record of Gary Numan playing live when he was well and truly re-energising his career.

The Show
An audience recording from the time. A pseudo stereo version was passed to me by a listener a while back and while it was super wide and clear, it was also...not very powerful. Everything sounded quite far away, if you like. So I found the original mono version elsewhere on the internet and decided I would have more fun improving that.

What Was Done
There were some gaps and fadeouts - removed the gaps and improved the fadeouts so the gig flows better (the first few seconds of a couple of songs are sadly missing). Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed that. There was some mains hum noticeable in quiet parts - removed most of that. The last few songs sound like they're from a different source and were louder on the left than the right - fixed that. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and wider. The result is really really nice; I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And if, like me, you really enjoy those drum fills in Bombers - turn the sound up for a treat! Ced is nice and clear in this recording.

Another Gary Numan show for you this time. This was a very good audience recording, which responded well to some studio toys to clean up the sound, make it clearer and give it a bit more "oomph". All the drums, bass, guitar and synths are rather clearer now.

There are a few cuts in the recording and 2 small ones remain which I couldn't fix - during Berserker, the recording skips a couple of seconds during Karen Taylor's solo vocal part way through, and the intro and first note of Down In The Park was missing altogether, so rather than have it jump in loudly, I faded it in with the cheering after the previous song. The rest is pretty special, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Show 165 - Gary Numan - Live At Manchester Apollo - 26 Sept 1979

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show

Live recordings of Gary Numan from his first national tour in 1979 are few and far between - and those that exist in the public domain (all audience recordings) are very poor quality generally. But thanks to a few donations over the last year or so, I have been able to invest in better restoration and mastering software, so I thought I'd have a go at repairing this one - not quite realising just how much time it would take up!

What Was Done

You can hear a snippet of what the BEST of the original recording sounded like in the intro to the show but this one took a lot of work. A brief list of things fixed for this one...All these things listed are now gone, as best as I can do, so don't worry.. ;-)

First thing I did was reduce the hall "reverb" - the show sounded like it was recorded from the back of the hall (or possibly from the toilet in the bar outside the hall...!) and the band were a long way away. It was hissy (of course). Recording levels were low. Bass distortion in places too. It was too fast and high pitched, there were odd gaps, tape dropouts so all the way through the volume was up and down on the left and right channels (not always at the same time), the sound COMPLETELY changing in quality for a couple of seconds...why? Maybe the mic was hidden in a jacket which opened up for a few seconds, who knows...

There were also some random beeps part way through, which had nothing to do with the gig - I can only think whoever transferred this to digital format used demo software that inserted the beeps! There were also a whole bunch of scuffling banging noises - I think the tape recorder was being moved about during the first few songs and the mic was brushing something.

Sadly, the last part of "Bombers" is missing - I guess that's where the tape ran out and needed turning over. Some things I can't restore - rather than it just STOP as it did on the original, I faded it out and back in as it goes into Remember I Was Vapour. And finally - of course, being recorded from a tape recorder in a hall full of people in 1979, it was in mono.

Once all the above was worked on, only THEN did I get to EQ and use the sound improving tools to improve the sound. In all, this was probably the equivalent in man hours of several days work. Working on a show like this there will always be some compromise in the final EQ choices and it was never going to sound as clear as Living Ornaments 79 of course - or even the full Living Ornaments 80 from Manchester (that was originally a soundboard recording, so far clearer source material) but I think you now have an alternative 1979 live show which is finally listenable!

Show 159: Gary Numan - Live At The Ritz Theatre New York - 26 Oct 1982

The Show

Yes, this gig has been done before...but when a friend of mine and listener to Live and Loud! got in touch with a different recording of this show, I took a listen and decided it was WELL worth working on, and replacing the older version with this. Show 88, with over 2200 downloads - and the most popular Gary Numan show I've done so far - is now offline and replaced by this one.

In 1982 Gary Numan spent a year in the USA. While he was there, he went on tour with a unique band; Chris Slade on drums, Pino Palladino on bass, Rob Dean from Japan on guitar and keyboards, Roger Mason and John Webb on keyboards. Recordings of this tour are few and far between - and usually pretty awful quality. Somebody somewhere might still have the original recording the copy I received was taken from - but they ain't sharing if they do! In any case, I doubt without restoration work it would sound anything like this good...this is the best available recording from that tour being shared out to the world.

It still needed a fair bit of work but was in better basic shape than the source for the previous version was. So after removing hall reverb, lots of studio magic and some final EQ and tweaking...here it is.

But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. The Show
A second show from Numan's tour of North America in early 1980 (the other show I did back in 2012 is here). Unlike that soundboard recording, this one does feature all the songs in the set, even including the intro tape. So you also get 3 tracks not released until later in the year (I Die:You Die and early versions of Remind Me To Smile and Remember I was Vapour, from the next Telekon album).

What Was Done

While it is a recording from the audience, it's a pretty good one and has possibly been worked on a bit by someone before. However, I did still have a fair bit of work to do. It had to be slowed down for a start - the source files were running about 8-10 bpm too fast and Gary sounded about 12 years old in places... Then there were 2 bits where the sound skipped a few seconds and also some random clicks appearing in places which I fixed as best I could (try finding them now...!) and then I got to work with EQ to improve the sound a bit - the drums now have more prominence and it's all a bit clearer. I believe some tracks from the original are on YouTube if you want to compare.

2021 UPDATE
2 years on and I had a listen to this and decided I could improve the sound quality further still using the newer software tools I own now. For an audience recording it now sounds really excellent I think.

The Show
This one is taken from 1 of my old cassettes - bought in Camden Market quite probably not long after the tour in 1985. Its a fairly decent audience recording - no hollering or chatting from anyone nearby so you can just concentrate on the music!

What Was Done

After transferring it, I applied some gentle noise reduction and then 30 band EQ to remove some mid range mud and enhance the bass frequencies a bit (you can hear the kick drum now). I also processed and widened the sound a bit and its now a very listenable show - good quality recordings of this tour are not easy to find so I hope you enjoy this one!

Paper Toys - The High Touch

A bit of a one off for me this one. Many many years ago (1988) I played in a band and at our first gig, the support was a duo called Paper Toys. We've known them on and off ever since. They went through other incarnations and several personnel changes, including being known as Desire and Eden's Rage, before splitting up in the mid 1990s.

In 1988 they went from supporting my band to supporting Gary Numan on his UK tour that year. This tape is a recording of that tour, recorded at The Astoria, London, 12 October 1988.

The lineup at that time featured founder members Joe Quinton on guitar and lead vocal, Paul Nichols on bass and vocals, with Jenny Startin on keyboards and also Ultravox drummer Warren Cann who came on to play guitar on their last song.

Originally released officially by the band at the time, I was approached by Paul and asked if I could tidy it up a bit.  So with a fair bit of 30 band EQing and a bit of noise reduction, and a little editing here and there, here's the result.

With the band's permission, it now exists for download as 1 MP3 here.

Show 95 - Dramatis - Paris Theatre London - May 1982

***2022 UPDATE***
Cherry Red Records have remastered and rereleased all of Dramatis' recorded output from back in the day, including this live recording and including it all on a 2CD digipak. That's been released as of 22 April 2022, so my restoration has been taken down, after being downloaded for free 1587 times.

This page is now left here for reference. For Future Reference, you might say... Now go and buy the reissue!
***UPDATE ENDS***

Dramatis were Russell Bell, Chris Payne, Ced Sharpley and Denis Haines - all members of Gary Numan's backing band from 1979-1981 and during 1981/2 were signed to Elton John's Rocket Records label, releasing 7 singles and an album.

This is a remaster of an FM broadcast of excerpts from their live set from 1982 recorded at the BBC's Paris Theatre, in Lower Regent Street, London - they were a 3 piece at this point, with Haines having left after the album was released. I had a copy of this recording, taped off the radio back in the day which disappeared over the years. Many years later, I was able to replace it with an mp3 copy which really wasn't very good - very muffled and dull sounding but at the time I couldn't find better.

I recently had a request to remaster this gig and upload it to Live and Loud! and I wanted to do better than resurrect my mp3 copy - someone must surely have a better source! So I asked around. Another copy was forthcoming which was much clearer but had a lot of hiss on it (unremovable amounts of it, in fact, as it turned out). But then! Someone got in touch who had a copy on cassette recorded at the time - and that was better still. Result!

So after collecting it, I transferred it to a lossless audio file and got to work. It was a typical radio mix from the time - very flat, dry and sparse sounding. I removed the small amounts of tape hiss and spent much time putting it through a 30 band EQ to enhance the bass, drums and guitar and create space between the instruments (as per usual). I'm pleased to say it sounds much more punchy and clear now, with everything rather more "live".

The one album released, For Future Reference is worth tracking down - its been released on budget re-releases a couple of times since 1981 credited to Gary Numan/Tubeway Army as "The Dramatis Project" among other names which does a big disservice to 4 great musicians, frankly. In more recent times, there were plans for Dramatis to reform and get their back catalogue re-released but drummer Ced Sharpley sadly passed away a few years ago and it seems enthusiasm from the remaining members to continue has dissipated since. Which is a shame.

So that leaves this - as sometimes happened with the BBC recordings, it wasn't an especially good sound mix but hopefully with what I've done its far more listenable now than it ever was.

Show 88: Gary Numan - Live At The Ritz Theatre New York - 26 Oct 1982

***PLEASE NOTE THAT AFTER OVER 2200 DOWNLOADS, THIS SHOW HAS BEEN REPLACED BY SHOW 159 HERE***

However, recordings of this tour are few and far between and all are poor quality, and some songs were never played live again, so I've done what I can to make this one listenable.

I could write a book on all the work involved in fixing this one. Of 3 sources, I started work on one only to find that 1 track in particular had lots of noises I couldn't remove on it, so I started from scratch on the next best source. Hours of editing, volume balancing, selectively EQing different parts to reduce the effect of distortion, reducing large amounts of tape hiss without killing the recording altogether, as well as the usual EQ to bring out the instruments and voice...well, I'm glad to see this one done, put it that way! I hope you think its worth it.

Show 78: Gary Numan - Live at The Hammersmith Odeon London - 14 October 1983

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show

This was originally a radio broadcast (hence the edited setlist, sadly!). I had a copy of this on tape from 1983 for a long time which was great quality - but lost that some years back and the only copies I could find were poor recordings and low bit rate mp3s. One copy was even in mono!! So it was good to find a decent copy again (and my thanks to Stephen for letting me have these!).

What Was Done
It was rather flat but otherwise in good condition, so not much repair work needed. Instead I spent a lot of time EQ'ing it. It was worth it - if you like your tomtoms aggressive and your synths to make your spine quiver, then you've come to the right place with this one. Loudspeakers please, or at least decent headphones - you'll really notice the difference, even if you have this recording already from elsewhere! :-) Enjoy.

Show 32: Gary Numan - Max Bell Centre, Calgary, Canada - 12 November 1980

The Show

***UPDATE 2022***

Well...back when I did this it was believed the last night of the tour - which this gig clearly IS - was in Calgary. But following someone commenting below that that the last night was actually in Edmonton, Canada on 12 November 1980, I started doing some detective work. THIS is that gig. So the date is RIGHT but the venue is WRONG.

Mislabeled as Calgary back in 2013 when I found this (or was sent it, I forget which). I am pretty sure back then, online sources also had the last night of the tour as being Calgary but that has been corrected in several places since. Apparently the 2 dates were transposed when the tour was originally announced but later changed so Edmonton came at the end.

I am indebted to the poster in the comments for bringing this to my attention, and also a good friend of mine, Jeff Tolva, for helping to clear this up, and also providing the 2 images below as proof that
THIS gig is actually from the Kinsmen Field House, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on 12 November 1980, and is definitely the last night of the tour - as you can hear Gary telling everyone that before the final encore.

***UPDATE ENDS***

Numan released his second solo album "Telekon" in the Autumn of 1980 and embarked on his second major tour in 12 months - and his second in the USA and Canada in 7 months. This recording features the full set from the very last night of the Teletour, after he'd already made up his mind that he would retire from touring. The show gets better through the set I think, and the last song in the set, We Are Glass, is especially exciting with lots of analogue synths squawking away.

What Was Done

This is a soundboard recording and had deteriorated with age a bit. EQ'ing and remastering has brought out the best of it I think and it's now far more listenable - it certainly proved popular with Numan fans.

UPDATE 2019: While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording back in 2013.

Show 5: Gary Numan - The Palladium, New York, USA, 24 February 1980

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. The Show

Gary Numan followed up his debut national tour of the UK in the Autumn of 1979 by taking the Touring Principle tour into Europe and then across the world. By early 1980 he was touring the USA and Canada. This set features some changes from the UK tour, including an early version of Remind Me To Smile, which featured on the Telekon album released 8 months later.

What Was Done

This (I'm pretty sure) was originally a a soundboard - sounds to me like a soundboard as its quite flat (or it was before I EQ'ed it) but its not the complete gig either, which is unusual (but not unknown) for soundboards. It's also mono - which soundboards often were at that time. Anyway, I EQ'ed and remastered it and its a great addition to any Numan collection with some raw sounding synthing all the way through!

UPDATE: While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording back in 2012. Once I did that, I also expanded the sound a bit so it sounds more stereo than mono; this is an all new version, really.
