Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 119 - Jean Michel Jarre - Live in Lyon - 5 October 1986

This is a concert from 1986, as part of Lyon's celebrations welcoming Pope John Paul II to the city. I wonder what he thought of it! Anyway, the recording... This concert was actually released on VHS at the time but this recording I've uploaded for you is actually taken from 2 separate recordings of FM broadcasts - both of which were incomplete. I won't tell you where the join is, but hopefully it's not too easy to spot now!

But there was a lot of work - both recordings were at different speeds, for a start...and sounded quite different. Only when they were at the same speed and sounding similar, could I put them together, then start denoising what was quite a hissy recording, repairing inconsistencies in volume, then using the trusty 30 band EQ to remove a harsh top end and bring back the lower end, which was quite lacking (except on some "far too loud!" Simmons drum fills in various tracks which needed treating all by themselves). This was all a lot of work but I think it was worth it. So I hope you enjoy it too!

Incidentally, no setlist anywhere makes mention of Second Rendez-Vous Part 3 making a reappearance at the end of the show on the night - but it existed on the recording I was given. I suspect it may not be from Lyon at all, as it cuts in rather sharply. It doesn't sound too out of place, so I left it in. Also, Jarre introduces his musicians over the encore and the music goes very quiet (how it was broadcast at the time I expect) and the FM noise and hiss gets quite bad at that point. I removed a lot of it, but left some as Jarre was in danger of sounding like he was speaking from the bottom of the sea...

Anyway, enough of my yakking... You can download this new and improved (and hopefully unique) recording for free here as 1 320kps MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to support the site with a very small donation and in return receive separate, properly tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can do this. Either way - enjoy the show!

Now On Instagram

Hello! A bit of an experiment. Just this minute joined Instagram - if any of you are on there, search for liveandloudshows or click on the link and that will be me. Nothing there right now but I might well try putting up the odd video, as well as the ads and news, when there is some.

Show 118 - Pulp - Live at Melkweg Amsterdam - 8 December 1995

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show

First time appearance for Pulp! A recording of highlights from a Dutch gig performed just a couple of months after the release of Different Class - their most well known album. Although no information was included with the copy I had, this sounded very much like a recording from FM radio.

What Was Done

It was very bright and tinny and with a few uneven volumes and clicks, so this was much careful work with 30 band EQ to reduce that harshness and improve the bottom end, while also improving clarity between the instruments and voices - as well as manually editing to even out the volume and remove the clicks. They rocked that night - they rock this recording now. Enjoy!

Supporting The Site

If you want to support the work I do on these recordings, and the site, and (if you wish to) obtain separate, fully tagged 320kbps MP3s of this restoration for less than the price of a coffee in return, lossless FLACs or even a lossless copy on CDR, head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs. There is no obligation to do so of course - you can take the file on this page absolutely for free - but every single donation does go towards this site and domain/storage costs, and helps the site stay open, and helps me do more shows. Either way, enjoy the show.

Christmas Greetings

Another year comes to a close for Live and Loud!

2017 saw 30 repaired and remastered live gig recordings and 3 repaired and remastered shows under the Live and Loud! Radio banner. We had new gigs from artists previously appearing and plenty of first time appearances which have proved popular - XTC, Bob Marley, Average White Band, The Cars, Sisters of Mercy, Sparks and so many more.

Stay around as there is much more to come - both new repaired and remastered live gigs as well as more remastered radio sessions.

For me personally its not been the easiest of years and life has changed somewhat. But I would like to thank you all for listening, downloading and sharing the links for your interest in Live and Loud!. While I do scour the internet to find shows to do, I've also had a few people who have got in touch and offered and given me shows to work on - thank you! Some of those have yet to be done I know, but I'll get through as many as possible (the "gigs to be done" list numbers in the hundreds, believe it or not).

And finally to the select few who have been good enough to donate to the site - you really have helped keep this site going, so an enormous thank you to you especially.

See you all in 2018 for plenty more shows! Merry Christmas!

Show 117 - Ultravox - Live in Lyon - 22 Jan 1983

This time it’s a rare performance from Ultravox from 1983. They released their 3rd album with Midge Ure on vocals in October 1982 called Quartet, and then supported that with a world tour lasting from November until the following Spring. Brief highlights from the London dates of this tour appeared on a short live video and EP, Monument, which has since been reissued on DVD and CD - but otherwise recordings of this tour are quite scarce.

This was labeled as a radio broadcast - if it was, it sounds like they pretty much took a recording from the soundboard and broadcast that as the original was pretty unprocessed - but it would explain the missing intro to the start and the sharp fadeout at the end. Apart from the missing intro to Astradyne the recording was in pretty good condition but a bit tinny and hard on the ears. I've corrected a couple of bits where the recording was muffled and also applied a 30 band EQ to improve the bottom end (you can hear the drums and bass far more clearly now) and take off the harshness from the guitar, vocals and synths. Really pleased with how this one has turned out! A must for every Ultravox fan, without question.

You can download this new and improved recording for free here as 1 320kps MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to support the site with a very small donation and in return receive separate Ultravox-tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can do this.

This is the last show for 2017 - Merry Christmas!

Show 116 - The Icicle Works - Live at Shellys Club Stoke - 1985

A debut on Live and Loud! for The Icicle Works, with a show from an unknown date in 1985. 2020 EDIT - thanks to a listener posting below, looks very much like this date is 22 July 1985.

This was a flat and slightly tinny sounding recording of an FM broadcast from 8 October of a gig played sometime before then but certainly sometime that year as it features songs from not only their first album but the second album too - which was released in September 1985.

I used a wee bit of noise reduction but mainly EQ to improve the bottom end, make the drums and bass more audible, and get some clarity between the instruments and vocals.

You can download this new and improved recording for free here as 1 320kbps MP3 file.

Show 115 - XTC - Live at Liverpool Erics - 13 August 1977

A debut on Live and Loud! for XTC - but surely not the last time they will appear (I now have a few of their gigs on my "to be done" list).

A very early gig this one - this was a soundboard recording from a gig played a couple of months before the release of their debut EP! It seems the source I received was worked on by someone at some stage, as, as so often happens, the loudness was off the scale almost and very unnatural, making it tiring to listen to. And quite toppy, with a shallow 2 dimensional aural range. So, I used EQ to not only improve the bottom end and clarity between the instruments but make it less tiring on the ears. Several hours of work later and it's a great show; the band are full of energy and it's a great - if short! - set.

You can download this new and improved recording for free here as 1 320kbps MP3 file.

Show 114 - Kraftwerk - Live at Paradiso Amsterdam - 11 September 1976

This is an historic gig from Kraftwerk from 1976. Historic because it featured the first appearance of Trans Europa Express, live on stage.

This tape is an audience recording and was a wonderful (if incomplete) record of the gig. However, it did have a few odd glitches, tape noise and sudden changes in the sound levels to be repaired. Audience recordings don't generally respond as well as FM or soundboard recordings to EQ but once all the above were sorted out, a few hours spent on EQ did help improve the clarity of the music being played and increase the lower end frequencies a bit (often lost on audience recordings).

Sadly the recording fades out during the latter half of Autobahn (but you still get about 17 minutes worth, including much cool jamming). Also featured is an early version of Europe Endless (I guess they never did a Dutch translation of Europa Endlos either!), so the gig is well worth your time - a classic gig from a period before the ready availability of computers; you can really hear it all being played on stage.

You can download the recording here as 1 320kbps MP3 file entirely for free.

On the other hand, if you would like to have separate properly tagged MP3s or lossless FLAC files, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards internet and hosting costs.

The setlist for this recording is shown slightly differently on several sources around the web - after a fair bit of research I believe the setlist below is the definitive one.

Incidentally, since I started work on this recording, I've made contact with 1 of the guys responsible for getting this old TDK D90 cassette recording into the digital world some years ago - so a big thanks to Twingo and Jerome  - without them, this concert would be consigned to history. Please do check out http://twingokraftwerk.com for more info on this Kraftwerk live recording as well as many others!

Show 113 - DAF - Live In Germany - 9 May 1981

A debut on Live and Loud! for D.A.F - Deutsch Americanische Freundschaft. This was originally an FM broadcast of excerpts from a show (guessing from a German radio station) and another where someone had "restored" it at some stage and just turned everything up to 11... In fact, some parts of the recording had more bass, louder or with more high end than other parts at different times, so it was a bit of a job to try and get everything sounding better and clearer AND more consistent...but there aren't many good recordings of DAF available so I think this has been worth the work!

A good show in support of their then recently released 3rd album, Alles Ist Gut. Incidentally the track Fass Micht Nicht An later made an appearance on the album Gold und Liebe as Verschwende Deine Jugend.

You can download the recording for free here as 1 320kbps MP3 file entirely for free.

On the other hand, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.
