Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 183 - The Cure - Live At New University Birmingham UK - 28 Nov 1979

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit. Thanks.

A long overdue debut on this site for The Cure. Taken from their first national tour (after supporting the Banshees on theirs just a few months earlier) this audience recording came to me as a .wav file from a fan - a regular listener to Live and Loud! Shows, who asked if I could improve it.

It was very toppy, thin and boxy sounding - very little in the bass end and a lot in the mids and high end. After removing some of the reverb from the recording to bring back more music signal to work on, I removed tape noise and repaired where the tape stopped (and turned over, I imagine!) at the end of 1 song so that song fades nicely into the start of the next. Then repaired some odd clicks and noises and the odd tape dropout. Only then did I get to work on the sound and enhance what bass there was, buried away, while trying to bring more clarity and weight to the sound as a whole.

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE by clicking right HERE and grabbing it as one 320kbps MP3 file.

If you're new to the site, please have a look at the list of artists covered and grab what you like! If you would like to support what I do, and this site, and obtain separate, fully tagged 320kbps MP3s or lossless FLACs of the restoration in return, head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs. Absolutely no obligation to do so of course - you can take the file on this page absolutely for free - but every single donation does go towards this site and domain/storage costs, and helps the site stay open, and me do more shows.

Either way, enjoy the show! And if you like this recording, PLEASE spread the news and share the page link to anyone you think might be interested - facebook fan groups, web forums, Twitter and Instagram are a great way of spreading the word - that way, I always find out which bands are popular and can do more shows by them in the future. Many thanks.

Show 182 - Slade - Live At Edinburgh Odeon - 9 Dec 1981

Another great live performance from Slade, this time from 1981's Til Deaf Us Do Part tour. This is actually 2 recordings. Most is from an audience recording, but parts of the gig were broadcast on FM radio. Someone at some point stuck them together to make the whole gig but there were overlapping bits. And teh sound quality wasn't very good. So I've done my best to clean up the recordings, and then blend them together.

Noise, tape dropouts, uneven levels and finally very muddy sound quality all got tackled. The final part was splitting up the tracks, removing overlapping parts and blending everything back together. And then mastering the whole thing. As often happens, the first track is probably the worst sounding but after that it improves considerably.

Show 181 - Front 242 - Live At Medusa's, Chicago - 28 September 1984

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't steal and take the credit. Thanks.

A first appearance on the site for Front 242, pioneers of Electronic Body Music (or EBM, as it's known these days). This was their debut gig in the USA in 1984; they started their support of Ministry on their "Wax Trax Singles Tour" the very next day in Trenton, New Jersey. The venue, Medusa's, was a "juice bar" (ie no alcohol served) for teens in Chicago which closed down long ago.

Taken from the mixing desk, this recording was donated to the site by a regular listener, who asked if there was any way it could be improved. It required a lot of work - breaks in the sound (some quite long ones), there were tape errors typical of old recordings, lots of noise, hiss...the original tape must have been in the wars a bit! So a good candidate for restoration even before actually trying to make it sound clearer.

So I set to work fixing tape dropouts, correcting the stereo image where possible (their live mixing was pretty extreme moving things left and right, so much of that also needed preserving, while fixing the tape errors), removing as much noise and hiss as possible, then finally cleaning up the muddy sound with EQ and other tools, and remastering.

The result is far clearer and more listenable - to quote the person who donated the original: "I know it was pretty rough in spots (especially that first song), but you did an outstanding job". I am indebted to the same guy for taking the time to write me a short biog of the band which has proved invaluable in writing this page and my intro to the show. Thank you!

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for FREE, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file. Please note - the first track is the worst in terms of sound quality, especially at the beginning. Quality improves quickly after that.

If you would like to support what I do, and this site, and obtain separate, fully tagged 320kbps MP3s or lossless FLACs of the restoration, head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs. Hi!

To reliably find out about new uploads and other updates please consider subscribing to my new Live and Loud! Shows email newsletter at the link below.

Blogger (what this site is built on) stopped alerting subscribers with any updates quite a while back now, and I had no way of reliably giving everyone updates - relying on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram is often flaky at best. I will still be using those platforms - at least for now - but I now have a new newsletter via Substack which I will use to send out emails to subscribers to let them know about new gig restorations being added to the site, and any other site related news.

So if you want to keep uptodate with what'd going on on the site, please subscribe to receive future updates directly in your email inbox - it’s entirely free of course and you can unsubscribe at any time. Just use your email address in the box on the page; no Substack account is necessary.

As an incentive to sign up, I will be randomly picking 3 newsletter subscribers each month - on 1 October, 1 November and 1 December  - this year, who will receive 3 shows of their choice as separated MP3s or FLACs (their choice).

Show 180 - Kraftwerk - Live At L'Olympia, Paris - 28 Feb 1976

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't steal and take the credit. Thanks.

At the beginning of 1976 Kraftwerk played a few shows in Europe before doing a full tour in the Autumn. This is a recording of one of those early 1976 shows.

This show has appeared on bootlegs in various forms over the years - not all of which even had all the tracks played. Some also had radio announcers talking over them. There is at least 1 unrestored "complete" version out there with a different tracklisting, with the songs in a different order (the latter is also on YouTube, so some of you may well be familiar with that version already. It doesn't have the correct song titles either).

This restored and remastered version is complete, has no radio announcers and has some songs in a different order. And below, you will find the correct titles. Taken from the mixing desk for use on later radio broadcasts, this came to me from a collector in Germany. With this setlist order. Having compared this to the OTHER "complete" version, I think this one is more likely to be correct. There is applause at the beginning of the gig, and after each song played - as it should be. That doesn't happen on the other version. This setlist order also seems to flow far better, to me. If you disagree, that's ok. But until Herr Hutter tells me the actual setlist running order, I'll go with this one.

Annoyingly, someone has updated this gig on setlist.fm with the bootleg's running order, so that's no help either.

Anyway, I put the setlist as I see it. Incidentally, on the bootlegs Die Sonne, Der Monde, Die Sterne is mentioned - but the track is not that one; it's more like a vocoder jam more closely resembling the "Pulsar und Quasar" section of Radio Stars, so that's what I listed it as.

The original recording was often very quiet. After repairing a few clicks and minor faults, I remastered this so the volume is more consistent. This makes the synths really far more audible. I also EQed so the electronic percussion could be heard far better. And the crowd noise on the bootleg sometimes sounded edited and also too loud at times. So I've had a go at that too, to try and make it all sound a bit more natural.

The result is the best ever quality for this rare gig recording in my humble opinion. You can now download the repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for free, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.

If you would like to support what I do, and this site, and obtain separate, fully tagged 320kbps MP3s or lossless FLACs of the restoration, head on over to the Rewards For Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs. ***Some extra information has come to light which you might find interesting. Part of restoring this show involved increasing the volume of large parts of the recording that were very quiet. As a result of this you can now hear Ralf Hutter occasionally speaking to the crowd in French during the gig. Well, Nicolas, a member of the Kraftwerk Facebook group, translated what Ralf is saying; with his kind permission, I repeat that here:

"Before playing Airwaves, Ralf says: "We are going to play a song to discover the Martenot waves". As a tribute to the instrument of the same name, "Les ondes Martenot" in french, made by Maurice Martenot in 1928.

Before The voice of energy, he says: "We are going to play a composition of energy, solar energy".

And before playing Mitternacht, Ralf says:
"We are going to play a song, Le vampire de Düsseldorf" ( The vampire of Düsseldorf ) and he adds "toujours à la recherche", which can be translated as "always in search for", I guess it means the song was still a work in progress. But the most interesting thing for me is that Ralf gave this Mitternacht/Showroom dummies suite a name."

For those who don't know, the Ondes Martenot is a very early electronic keyboard instrument, while "Le Vampire de Düsseldorf" is a 1965 German film thriller.

Show 179 - Depeche Mode - Live At Valbyparken Copenhagen Denmark - 16 Aug 1986

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't steal and take the credit. Thanks.

This is a restoration of one of two different audience recordings from this last night of the 1986 "Black Celebration" tour. The other one is a bit clearer but parts of what I heard are clipped in places (you hear it as distortion) and clipping is impossible to get rid of. So I gave myself a harder task and set about attempting the worse of the 2! The original was muddy sounding (as you'd expect from an audience recording outdoors), volume was up and down (sometimes in the same song) and the sound often floated over to the right hand side a lot.

As a "last night of the tour" treat, they performed "Somebody" in place of "It Doesn't Matter Two" for the only time on this tour, so it's nice to be able to work on this one.

I had a go at this twice - wasn't so happy with the first attempt so started again pretty much from scratch. It's now far clearer than it was, and at a far more even volume. There is still some drifting of the sound to the right but unless you're listening on headphones you may not even notice now. In any case, this sounds far far better than when I started and I hope you will agree, a much better record of the last night of the tour. You can certainly listen to, and enjoy the gig all the way through. This restoration is dedicated to the memory of Andy Fletcher, original member of DM, who passed away suddenly this year.

You can now download the repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for free, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 10 - Frankie Goes To Hollywood - John Peel Session Broadcast - 2 Dec 1982

Thanks.

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, which started in January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Tracklisting:
1. Two Tribes
2. The World Is My Oyster
3. Krisco Kisses
4. Disneyland

An interesting session, containing a much earlier version of Two Tribes, recorded before Trevor Horn got his hands on it!

Sourced from 320kbps MP3 files; all tracks converted to lossless wav for working on. All tracks were pretty clear but flat. The stereo image sounded badly artificially processed and imbalanced (drums too far on 1 side, for example). Worked to correct that, then mainly bringing back some bottom end, reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and bringing more clarity and life, adding space between the instruments before final mastering.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions - and as a bonus for those who prefer them, lossless FLAC versions too. You can download it HERE.

If you wish to express gratitude and donate a dollar or the cost of a coffee to keep the site going, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can also receive freebies for a very small donation towards the site costs.

And if you know anyone who wants a copy of these tracks, I'd rather you redirect anyone to my site below for a copy - helps me gauge which artists are popular! - but if you do redistribute please keep the tracks together in the original zip with the info file! Thank you. :)

Either way - enjoy!

Aerosmith don't need any introduction from me... Glad to finally feature them on the site though!

This was an FM radio broadcast and as such isn't the full set. It was in broadly ok shape when I found it but rather flat and slightly muffled. I fixed 1 or 2 glitches in the sound I found, then got to work on the EQ and restoration of the sound; making Joey Kramer's drums and Tom Hamilton's bass more audible, creating space between the instruments, bringing out the guitars and making everything clearer than it was. Then I remastered it.

The result is a really clear, powerful, stereo recording. You can now download the repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for free, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.

A 2nd appearance for Joe Jackson on Live and Loud! (you can find the first restored gig of his I did a few years ago, right HERE).

This was an FM radio broadcast, originally broadcast in February 1980, and was donated by a listener to Live and Loud! a couple of years ago (sometimes it takes a while to get through these - sorry about that...!). I had to correct the pitch and speed as it was running too fast and was about a semi-tone high. It was also really noisy - FM radio noise - so I removed as much of that as I could without damaging the important stuff (the music and singing). There was only 1 really audible glitch on 1 song - fixed that. Once all that was done, I then got to work on the EQ and restoration of the sound, making the drums more punchy, creating space, with everything clearer than it was, then mastering.

The result is a really clear, powerful, stereo recording. You can now download the repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for free, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.

I'm very happy to finally to be able to bring a 2nd restoration of an early SoM gig to you (if you missed the first one, you can download that from HERE).

To me, this sounds like a mono soundboard recording although there are apparently several versions of this gig on the internet, including audience recordings. All versions apparently omit the last track, Emma.

Anyway, for this one I fixed some tape dropouts and some quite alarming variations in volume, in places (the first track in particular was far louder than the rest of the set - sound man sorting out levels, maybe). Adrenochrome has part of it missing, so I faded out and back in so it wasn't quite so jarring. I also reduced background noise and made a few other little tweaks here and there before finally getting to work on the sound itself - bringing back some bottom end and creating a bit more space between the instruments where possible. After that, some studio toys were used and the final recording now has more presence and clarity than the original I was given.

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for free, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.

But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't steal and take the credit. Thanks.

I have a listener to thank for sending me the raw material for this one - he donated several Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk live recordings - and no doubt there will be at least one Kraftwerk performance restored soon.

Ever since restoring the 1987 Reichstag live performance, I had wanted to restore a show from the classic early 1970s Baumann era - and finally, thanks to my listener, I have one.

Recorded from the audience, there are elements of the recording which were overloaded (Tangerine Dream were known for playing very loud at times) and most of it was very muddy and unclear sounding. I have done my best to make it sound clearer, and while I can't remove a distorted recorded signal, I have tried to lessen it a bit where it does occur. I also removed some ambience to give me more music to work on, removed low level noise, EQed and generally made the recording clearer to listen to with some studio toys.

TWO versions of this show are available below! My original restoration of the source I was given, and...a new version with pitch and speed slightly brought down. A friend got in touch after listening to the first restoration - someone who is far more of an expert on TD than myself - and he is convinced the original source plays back slightly too high and fast based on the pitch and speed of the sequencer parts, and the sound of the Mellotron flute and special effects noises in particular. After discussing with him, and after experimenting and listening, I have produced a 2nd restoration which you can also download for free, which is a semitone lower and correspondingly slightly slower.

You can now download both restorations of this show exclusively for free, here as an 320kbps MP3 file:

Original speed restoration
Pitch corrected restoration

If you would like to have separate, fully tagged 320kbps MP3s or lossless FLACs of both versions of the restoration, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs. For this show, the requested donation is £2 for MP3 or £5 for FLAC - this will get you BOTH versions, so 2 sets of MP3s or FLACs for the price of 1. There is absolutely no obligation to donate of course - you can take the files on this page absolutely for free - but every single donation does go towards this site and domain/storage costs, and helps the site stay open.

Either way, enjoy the show! And if you like this recording, PLEASE spread the news and share the page link to anyone you think might be interested - that way, I always find out which bands are popular and do more shows by them in the future. Many thanks.

Show 174 - Skids - Live At The Glasgow Apollo - 16 June 1979

Kicking off the 2022 restorations with this brilliant, stereo show from Skids, from their tour of the UK supporting their debut album, Scared To Dance. The information with this said it was a soundboard recording but it wouldn't surprise me if this was actually an FM recording - the basic mix was really good and there's audience noise, which is often missing on soundboards. There were also a couple of edits already in the source files where audience noise was cut.

Anyway, first job was removing quite a few tape dropouts from either the left or right channel. After that, it was EQ and some studio toys to revitalise the recording and make it clearer and less flat, before moving on to mastering to finish things off and bring the best out of the existing sound quality. The result is a really clear, powerful gig by one of Scotland's finest bands (in my humble opinion, anyway). And yes, some songs are played twice!

You can now download this repaired, restored and remastered version of this show in full blooded stereo, exclusively for free, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.
