Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night - or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want the shows in lossless format, or as separate tagged files, head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 87: David Bowie - Live In Cleveland - 25 November 1972

This is a remaster of a recording by someone from the audience on the night (update: that person has got in touch with some more details - see the comments section below). As such it might not be as clear as most of the gigs on the archive (especially the first track, where the sound engineer on the night took a few minutes to get things sounding ok).

2016 has been a bad year for many. It was also the year David Bowie passed away which affected me and many others more than I guess we would have thought, so I wanted to do something from him to close the year as a mark of respect. This gig catches him coming towards the end of his first proper US tour. The recording - recorded in the crowd, on tape,  over 40 years ago is a remarkable record of a great gig, with Bowie chatting in between songs. I spent more than a few hours on EQ'ing this but fortunately otherwise there wasn't too much to do.  There are a couple of instances where the song fades out and back in - these were on the original recording and have been left as is.

The original recording is in mono, so I took the opportunity to do a simulated stereo remaster as well, as a separate exercise. So now you have a choice, you can have it in remastered mono, or you can have the "stereo" version. Or of course you can download both.

The show is now available to download exclusively for free at these links:

Remastered Mono Version
Remastered Pseudo-Stereo Version

Both are 1 MP3 file. Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.

Incidentally, if anyone sets this up as a torrent - that's ok but if can you let me know and credit this page as the original source of this version in the accompanying docs, that would be cool. Ultimately the more fans hear these the better, so I'm not going to get precious about it!

Show 86: The Human League - Live at Festival of Fools Amsterdam - 10 June 1980

This time it’s a welcome return to Live and Loud! for The Human League. There aren't many live recordings of the first incarnation of the band and I’ve been trying to track down this particular recording for some considerable time. And then within a month, I had 3 copies!

Unfortunately all 3 are quite flawed 1 way or another. Despite this being such a short recording (originally from Dutch radio), this may well have taken me the longest time to repair and restore! However, I think its been well worth it. It is, quite simply, now clearer and better than any other live bootleg of The Human League I've come across to date.

This performance, at a mixed arts festival in Amsterdam, was (I think!) the last to feature the original lineup. On that basis alone it needed a decent copy of it preserving; I hope this is it.

Show 85: Thomas Dolby - Live at Dominion Theatre London - 28 February 1984

This time, it’s a debut on Live and Loud! for Thomas Dolby with a show taken from his The Flat Earth tour of 1984.

I had 3 different versions of this recording, all at different bit rates. 2 of the recordings had some different tracks from each other but were higher quality than the 3rd version which had all the recorded tracks on. So I ended up piecing the best of the 2 together to form 1 complete recording. If you listen carefully you can perhaps play "spot the difference" and see where the joins are! But its all come together well so hopefully most of you won't be able to tell. :-)

Careful EQ of each source separately took some time, as did the editing of the tracks together so they're not glaringly obvious - but it sounds great now, superb stereo and crystal clear. 1 song, Airwaves, does fade out and back in at 1 point, thanks to the original cassette recording running out and needing to be turned over!

Is it all the tracks played? Information and pictures of that 1984 tour seem quite hard to find but maybe not; its about an hour and 10 minutes long. Its certainly all the tracks that I can find that were recorded though, including an unused, lower quality soundboard.  Information is so scarce that a source I often use to confirm tour information didn't have this gig listed at all (it does now; I added it).

The show is now available to download exclusively for free here as 1 MP3 file. Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.

Show 84: Devo - Live at Wollman Skating Rink Central Park New York - 21 July 1980

Another outing for Devo, and this is a really energetic performance from the original spud boys! Their 3rd album - Freedom of Choice - had just been released in May 1980 and Devo went on a tour in support of the album which lasted from May until August and included dates in Japan, mainland Europe, the UK, the USA and Canada. This was also the tour which saw them wearing the famous red energy domes for the first time.

This recording was in generally good shape but had a couple of weird moments with noise lasting several seconds over the recording, which took some getting rid of. After that I spent a few hours with EQ which has really paid dividends, giving clarity and power to all the instruments. I finished off with some mastering tools and I'm sure you'll enjoy the end result. 20 tracks of brilliance as the energy levels get pumped up.

Show 83: Vangelis - Live in Rotterdam - 18 June 1991

This time, it’s a debut on Live and Loud! for Greek composer Vangelis.

In 1991 Vangelis was asked by the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs to provide the highlight of an event being held in Rotterdam and a concert was organised at the docks, with Vangelis performing outdoors to backing tracks with animations and lasers being projected onto nearby buildings. It was unfortunately a relatively short concert for the 150000 people who were said to have attended; what is here would indeed appear to be the whole thing - an encore had been planned but apparently was abandoned due to the awful weather on the night (as the night wore on, the rain got worse and worse).

This is originally an FM recording - I spent about an hour alone on repairing a rather bad bit of tape damage to the original recording (its not gone completely but that part doesn't disappear anymore). Then it was some careful EQ to separate out the instruments a bit and give greater clarity, reducing the harsh high end frequencies and restoring the lower end.

Show 82: Split Enz - Live at Hammersmith Odeon London - 27 September 1980

A while ago I did a show by Crowded House which has been really popular - and I enjoyed doing it too (you can find that here) so I thought I'd delve a bit further back into the history of the Finn brothers! So - a debut on Live and Loud! for Split Enz, formed by Tim Finn in 1971/72 and a band which his younger brother Neil joined in 1977.

This show catches them on their UK tour after the release of their 5th album, True Colours in June 1980; an album which enabled them finally to break internationally. The recording was in good condition apart from a bit of noise and hum - so once that had been worked on, it was a relatively straight forward EQ and master job - losing the tinniness, bringing up the bass, losing the midrange mud and creating space between the instruments. Job done!

Not quite a full show, this was originally an FM radio broadcast designed to fit in under an hour. As ever with the Finns, a fair bit of chat in between songs, despite this being a radio transcription (chat between songs often gets cut).

The show is now available to download exclusively for free here as 1 MP3 file. Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.

Show 81: Tears For Fears - Live at Hammersmith Palais London - 18 April 1983

A debut on Live and Loud! For Tears For Fears. I’ve been looking on and off for a few years for a good early recording with more than a few tracks on it and finally found this recording - a BBC recording made for broadcast in America. And then I found 2 versions - 1 totally drenched in tape hiss but lots of sound to play with, and the other a lower bit rate mp3 which had very little tape hiss but also very little top end so it sounded very dull and thin.

So I went to work on the noisy one - and while I COULD have removed every last bit of hiss, doing that in my opinion ruins the recording as it also removes a lot of the signal - crowd noise especially sounds weird, like its underwater! So I removed most of the noise but not all, so the recording still breathed a bit. So while this gig IS a little more noisy than most on the archive, it still sounds really good. I then spent a quite a while with EQ, separating out the stereo image and the space between the instruments to make them all stand out a bit better; that done I did some final mastering to add a bit of punch.

This is another recording where the sound man took a song or 2 to get the levels right but despite that I hope you agree that this gig is the best stereo representation of early Tears For Fears playing live.

Show 80: A Flock of Seagulls - Live at The Metro Club Boston - 4 August 1982

Well, long time listeners to Live and Loud! will know I've done a Seagulls gig before (you can find that here) but I was never completely happy with it - the original recording had been badly treated before I got it so I could only do so much. Recently I came across some other gig recordings by the band so have had chance to do a better one!

Even so there were some weird things going on; it was too fast, so it needed slowing down a little; the first 2 songs sounded had very different sound quality to the rest of the gig (!) so I had to treat them differently and make those 2 tracks sound closer to the rest of the set. And finally, I thought I'd finished it, then came back to it a few days later and realised I didn't like what I'd done so had to remedy that and make it sound better! So a fair amount of work - but well worth it, AFOS were a great live band back then and this is a great performance by them.  The set is mainly songs from the debut album but there are 3 new tracks which appeared on their 2nd album, "Listen", the following year.

I think 9 songs from this gig are on another bootleg recording - possibly its a King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show. This however, is a recording of the gig taken from the mixing desk on the night, so includes more of the songs - whether its actually the complete set, I can't say (there's no "(Its Not Me) Talking" in the set for example). Anyway, this recording has never sounded better, I hope. Enjoy!

Show 79: Tangerine Dream - Live at The Reichstag, Berlin - 1 August 1987

Another debut on Live and Loud! for a band requested by 1 of my listeners - in this case, 1 who has been good enough to even supply me with a recording to remaster.

As many Tangerine Dream fans will know, for a long time there was a central hub for the trading and swapping of live bootleg recordings called the Tangerine Tree (which you can read about here). I know little about it personally, but I have had 1 particular listener bending my ear a bit to feature Tangerine Dream on Live and Loud! for a while, so I challenged him to send me something suitable and eventually he sent me this show, a free event celebrating the 750th anniversary of Berlin, held outside the Reichstag. This gig was especially notable as the last gig featuring Christoph Franke, who had been with Edgar Froese in the band since 1971. So a bit of a landmark recording in some respects.

The recording, I am informed, was originally remastered for the Tangerine Tree release by Wouter Bessels. It was basically clean, although a bit flat and I did find a small drop in volume at one point, so after fixing that I spent a lot of time EQ'ing - its a long show, lasting over 2 hours so it took a while! But I think its been worth it.

I'm reliably informed as a result, this now has more of a balance between the backing tracks and the live playing. Either way, it sounds pretty spectacular I think. Even if you have this recording from the Tangerine Tree originally, I hope you'll give this a listen and enjoy it.

The show is now available to download exclusively for free here as 1 MP3 file. Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.

Show 78: Gary Numan - Live at The Hammersmith Odeon London - 14 October 1983

We haven't featured Gary Numan for quite a while - Considering he has a career going back to 1977 there aren’t actually that many good quality live recordings lending themselves to the Live and Loud! treatment. However, we have recently obtained a couple that can be done so here’s the first of them!

This was originally a radio broadcast (hence the edited setlist, sadly!). I had a copy of this on tape from 1983 for a long time which was great quality - but lost that some years back and the only copies I could find were poor recordings and low bit rate mp3s. One copy was even in mono!! So it was good to find a decent copy again (and my thanks to Stephen for letting me have these!).

It was rather flat but otherwise in good condition, so not much repair work needed. Instead I spent a lot of time EQ'ing it. It was worth it - if you like your tomtoms aggressive and your synths to make your spine quiver, then you've come to the right place with this one. Loudspeakers please, or at least decent headphones - you'll really notice the difference, even if you have this recording already from elsewhere! :-) Enjoy.

Live and Loud Archive is 2 years old (part 2)

With this site reaching the grand old age of 2 yesterday, I totted up how many downloads there had been since the shows started in 2012. No big surprise that the bands I've done the most shows of have had the most downloads but if you're curious to know just how many there have been, now you know.

The last post was based on how many times each show page on here has been read - that doesn't always equate to someone downloading a show. On the other hand, some shows were available for download before the archive was set up so the numbers will never match.

Anyway - here we are.
