Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music. There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 11 - Elvis Costello and The Attractions - John Peel Session Broadcast - 13 March 1978

 

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Stealing it and taking the credit isn't cool. Thanks.


Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, starting in January 2017, featuring radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired, restored and then remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original restored session, available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

All tracks were in pretty good shape (for once) which made things a little easier - no major repairs were required before I cleaned up the sound somewhat, mainly bringing back some bottom end, and bringing more clarity and life, adding some space between the instruments before final mastering.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions - and as a bonus for those who prefer them, lossless FLAC versions too. You can download it HERE.

    Why are you bothering with FLAC versions when the FLAC versions aren't lossless, they are just 320kbps mp3s that you have saved as FLAC files. Anyone can see that is true using Spek audio analyser. You normally charge people for FLAC too?

      Hmmm...well I have nothing to hide - unlike you, Mr Anonymous, so I allowed your comment to appear here so I can reply so everyone can see some of the nonsense I deal with.

      1. You clearly haven't read the donations tab - I state quite clearly that some shows (especially early ones) were originally found as MP3s and that everything I do is worked on in wav format, which saves any further loss than already existed.

      2. You're wrong - the source for this session wasn't from MP3s at all; I have the wav in front of me. Where that came from, I no longer remember but I don't check source files through an analyser before I work on them just in case they aren't what they seem - I focus on whether I can make gigs sound better and not check every source file I come across in any format. When almost every recording is from a very lossy format in the first place (ie cassette), checking file types through an analyser seems rather silly and pointless.

      And finally, no I don't "charge" people anything at all, for anything here. But those people who have donated in support of the site and requested FLAC copies of any show in return, not one has come back and said "this isn't a real lossless file". I also have private clients (including pro musicians, who have included what I've done on their releases) who have been very satisfied with what I've done for them. That being said, far more - many thousands - are happy enough with the free MP3 on the site. And that's fine too.

      It's not pointless to check that FLAC files you've claimed are lossless are actually what you claim they are. In this case - they are clearly exactly the same quality and format as 320kbps mp3. That's not lossless. I think if people are donating you money in return for what they believe to be higher quality versions, then it's a bit naughty to not actually check (or as you state above - even care) if they are higher quality or not. The fact that you've claimed cassettes are a lossy format shows you don't even understand the basics of what you are talking about (Lossy is a term referring to digital compression and cassette is obviously an analog format!). I'm glad you enjoy what you do, and i'm glad that others enjoy it too - but it doesn't sit right that you take donations under false pretences.

      Wrong again, Anonymous; I told you - I have nothing to hide and everything is on the website. Your comment about lossy only relating to digital compression was especially funny! Anyone who recorded in the analogue era knows exactly what I'm talking about. So thanks for the laugh.

      You are wrong, as I said earlier. Not much point in repeating my previous response to you I suppose so I'll end it here. BTW, I approve or deny comments - they only appear when I say so, thanks to spammers. As I said - I have nothing to hide, so I allowed yours to appear. People can read it and believe you, or me. I don't mind. But you're repeating yourself now and we will never agree, so I guess I'll stop this here and free you up to troll someone else you don't know but don't agree with. Anything else will just get deleted.
