Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 233 - Eurythmics - Live At Platz der Republik Berlin - 7 Jun 1987

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
A cassette recording of an FM stereo broadcast from the time. Generally sounding flat and rather muffled and with a couple of cuts where the tape was apparently flipped over or stopped.

What Was Done
The volume was rather ...varied, to say the least - like whoever recorded it realised their levels were a bit high and reduced them here and there to keep them from peaking - Sex Crime was substantially louder than the end of the gig, put it that way. Fixed all that. A couple of cuts from tape flipping or stopping. 1 I left as someone had edited it already to stay "on the beat" and doing my usual fade out/fade in crossover would have lost too much of the music; the other I did fade out and back in. I got to work on improving the sound quality with EQ and the usual studio toys after that. That made things much clearer and more powerful. Finally I mastered it, left it a few days, came back to it and...redid the mastering as I no longer liked what I'd done.

The result now is a great sounding gig in full stereo of course, very powerful and a great record of the band at the time. It really is an excellent performance. And I say that as someone who only really enjoyed some of their singles.

Show 157 - Billy Idol - Live At The Cow Palace, Daly City - 11 May 1987

A debut on Live and Loud! for Billy Idol in a restored FM radio recording from his Whiplash Smile tour of 1987.

The basic recording was sound enough but had some noise, odd bass rumbles, FM noise and tape dropouts to fix before I could get to the 30 band EQ part... the fairly thin radio recording now sounds far better with improved separation between the instruments and a much fuller live sound.

As of 2026, you now have the choice to not only download this repaired, restored and remastered show as one 320kbps MP3 file but also to stream it - exclusively for FREE by clicking below.

Show 124 - Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Live At Wembley Arena - 13 January 1987

A debut on Live and Loud!  for Frankie Goes To Hollywood from their last tour in the UK, when they were literally imploding back stage, with relations between Holly Johnson and the rest of the band at breaking point.

This was an FM broadcast recorded off air I think as this isn't the full set. It's also another recording someone had tried to improve before I came across it - everything whacked up to 11 and every song faded out - the intro to Rage Hard was even chopped off altogether and the song gone (guessing this was where the original C90 tape needed turning over). 1 or 2 tracks also sounded like they're from a different recording altogether. 30 band EQ has once again paid dividends and undone much of what was done - tightened up the bass, made the mix clearer and not so tiring on the ears and addressed some faults where the recording went very dull at times. All while still retaining the power in the sound on stage.

Show 91: Crowded House - Bottom Line New York - 22 March 1987

A second gig from Crowded House for Live and Loud! - and this one is from much earlier in their careers. After forming in 1985 when Split Enz came to an end, they eventually moved to the USA to record their first album - Crowded House - which was released in June 1986. Don’t Dream Its Over became a huge hit later that year and broke the band around the world.

They went back to the USA at the start of February 1987 and started 4 solid months of touring the country. This show is from that tour and was the first of 2 nights at The Bottom Line; this show originally broadcast on FM radio there.

The recording was in fairly good condition, just a bit flat sounding. Someone had faded out the end of every track on this recording before I got it, so there's not QUITE so much banter from the band in between songs as on the other show I did last year (you can find the other 2 Crowded House shows here) but its still a great show. I repaired some of those fades where they were quite severe and with some EQ to separate out and enhance the instruments and remove some of the sibilance from Neil's vocals, the show has polished up pretty well and sounds very clear.

Show 79: Tangerine Dream - Live at The Reichstag, Berlin - 1 August 1987

Another debut on Live and Loud! for a band requested by 1 of my listeners - in this case, 1 who has been good enough to even supply me with a recording to remaster.

As many Tangerine Dream fans will know, for a long time there was a central hub for the trading and swapping of live bootleg recordings called the Tangerine Tree (which you can read about here). I know little about it personally, but I have had 1 particular listener bending my ear a bit to feature Tangerine Dream on Live and Loud! for a while, so I challenged him to send me something suitable and eventually he sent me this show, a free event celebrating the 750th anniversary of Berlin, held outside the Reichstag. This gig was especially notable as the last gig featuring Christoph Franke, who had been with Edgar Froese in the band since 1971. So a bit of a landmark recording in some respects.

The recording, I am informed, was originally remastered for the Tangerine Tree release by Wouter Bessels. It was basically clean, although a bit flat and I did find a small drop in volume at one point, so after fixing that I spent a lot of time EQ'ing - its a long show, lasting over 2 hours so it took a while! But I think its been worth it.

I'm reliably informed as a result, this now has more of a balance between the backing tracks and the live playing. Either way, it sounds pretty spectacular I think. Even if you have this recording from the Tangerine Tree originally, I hope you'll give this a listen and enjoy it.

The show is now available to download exclusively for free here as 1 MP3 file.

Show 49: Siouxsie and The Banshees - Janus Landing, St Petersburg, Florida - 22 August 1987

After the release of their 8th album, Through The Looking Glass, the Banshees went on tour to the USA and Canada. This gig is the penultimate gig from that tour. It's a soundboard recording of the full gig and includes tracks from right through their career to that point. It's responded well to a bit of tweaking.

UPDATE 2018
While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording several years ago. You can now download this new version (as of 2018) HERE as 1 new 320kbps MP3 file.

If you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format of the new version, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.
