Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 211 - The Cars - Live at El Mocambo Toronto - 14 Sept 1978

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
A recording of an FM broadcast from the time. In mostly good condition but needing a few things fixing and the sound was rather flat and muddy.

What Was Done
There were a couple of dropouts fixed but nothing major, for once. I then got to work with a 30 band EQ and the usual studio toys to wash away the mud and bring some clarity to the sound mix, make the drums more impactful (they were pretty quiet) and then mastered to make the whole thing more even and powerful overall. The result is a really, really nice record of the band playing live from early in their career.

Show 193 - Ian Dury And The Blockheads - Live At The Old Waldorf Theatre San Francisco - 22 March 1978

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. The Show
Originally captured by KSAN FM radio on the night. This is the band supporting Lou Reed, on their first tour of the USA, just a few months after the release of their first album New Boots And Panties. This is only the 2nd show of the tour - a really good support slot performance.

What Was Done
The recording was in broadly good shape when it was given to me. There were some dropouts and rough fadeouts - presumably someone at some point had removed radio ads. I cleaned up the fades and fixed a few drop outs and microphone thumps here and there. I also removed some looped audience noise between 2 songs which I guess was inadvertently added by the radio station while editing back in 1978 - but for once, this was all fairly straightforward. There is still a little tape hiss but it's so low as to be pretty unobtrusive.

The recording was a bit flat and lacking in depth and sparkle - so I got to work to bring back both - low end so you could hear the bass and kick more clearly, some clarity and space to the sound mix so guitar, snare, keyboards and vocals are all more distinct, and then mastered to make it clearer still and more powerful overall, and wider. The result sounds great I think - and brings out the best in a great live performance.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 11 - Elvis Costello and The Attractions - John Peel Session Broadcast - 13 March 1978

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Stealing it and taking the credit isn't cool. Thanks.

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, starting in January 2017, featuring radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired, restored and then remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original restored session, available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Tracklisting:
1. (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
2. The Beat
3. Pump It Up
4. You Belong To Me

All tracks were in pretty good shape (for once) which made things a little easier - no major repairs were required before I cleaned up the sound somewhat, mainly bringing back some bottom end, and bringing more clarity and life, adding some space between the instruments before final mastering.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions - and as a bonus for those who prefer them, lossless FLAC versions too. You can download it HERE.

If you wish to express gratitude and donate a dollar or the cost of a coffee towards site costs in return, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can also receive freebies for a very small donation towards the site costs.

And i f you know anyone who wants a copy of these tracks, give 'em the link to this page - helps me gauge which artists are popular! But if you do redistribute the files please at least keep the tracks together in the original zip with the info file. Thanks.

Enjoy!

Show 167 - Dire Straits - Live At Leeds Polytechnic - 30 Jan 1978

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit. Thanks.

A rather wonderful snapshot of very early Dire Straits, in this soundboard recording taken from a date on the Talking Heads tour of the UK in early 1978, where Dire Straits were support band. The original bootleg I received was dated "31 January 1978" but every source online I found points to this gig actually being on the 30 January, so that's what I've gone with here.

Someone at some point had cleaned this up a little - there was little hiss and "Southbound Again" fades out before the end, with Eastbound Train fading in - but the recording was still unbalanced at times, and quite flat and dull, like most soundboards can be.

So I got to work on the stereo image, rebalanced that, then got to work improving clarity and punch with EQ and other studio tools. There is now "air" between the guys in the band, so you can hear everything much more clearly, and it sounds far clearer and, well just more "live" and exciting. A little final mastering and the work was done.

You can now download this restored show exclusively for free HERE as 1 MP3 file.

Show 162 - The Human League - Live At Bar 2 Sheffield - 12 June 1978

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit. Thanks.

The first live recording made of The Human League for you this time, done at their second ever gig. It recently came to light on YouTube, marked as their first ever show - and wikipedia lists it as such - but according to Martyn Ware  (and he would know) and other sources, it is, in fact, their second. The first gig was also at Psalter Lane Art College but several months earlier - on 16 February 1978. Even so, it's pretty wonderful it's now in the public domain after so long.

The original of this was recorded on a reel to reel tape recorder in a bar, with people milling about talking, getting drinks in, etc - the quality is pretty noisy and not very clear - partly due to THIS version being from a copy of a copy, in mono, and put on YouTube. The guy who originally recorded this still has his stereo original and plans to remaster it himself one day, so this is the best available at the moment.

For those who are interested in such things, I reduced the room ambience, tape hiss, fixed as many dropouts and changes in volume as I could, then got to work with EQ and other studio toys to bring some clarity back and expand the mono sound a little.

Featuring early versions of some songs that would appear on Reproduction, both sides of their first single Being Boiled, and a couple of tracks that would be consigned to history and remain unreleased at the time, this is a fascinating listen, recorded just days before Being Boiled was finally released by Fast Product. While it was never going to be a crystal clear listen, I hope you enjoy this new version.

The show is now available to download exclusively for free HERE as 1 MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s or FLACs, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.Either way, enjoy the show.

Show 154 - Japan - Live At Newcastle City Hall - 1 Jun 1978

After the last Japan show I restored (HERE), I was contacted by Rob Dean, from the band and asked if I could have a go at restoring this recording, which had recently come to light. He put me in touch with Stephen Holden, who had been gifted a copy of the recording by the original owner. Stephen has recently written a book about his time following the band in their early days - see below for details on how to obtain a copy of that.

This is a recording of Japan, supporting Blue Oyster Cult on their UK nationwide tour in mid 1978. The band's first taste of playing larger venues, I guess. Their set includes tracks from their recently released first album, and their upcoming second.

The original mono recording itself was a typical 1970s cassette recording, quite murky, slightly distorted in places but also with a few weird fadeouts - during Suburban Love and the intro to Don't Rain On My Parade in particular. Fadeouts in particular I can't do much about but I tweaked them as much as I dared and they're less extreme than they were, now.

Otherwise plenty of work went into correcting sound imbalances, trying to make the sound mix clearer so you can hear the drums, bass etc clearer, and so on. I also created a pseudo stereo version from the original mono file and restored that separately - so I effectively did this show twice. Lots also went into that too and its a bit clearer to listen to (to me) but you get the choice - mono, stereo, or both. All in all, this all took a bit longer than usual but was more than worthwhile, given some of the awful recordings out there.

You can safely download this restored, unique recording for free below as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way:

Radio Prog 8 - The Human League - John Peel Session Broadcast 16 August 1978

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, which started in January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 8 - The Human League - John Peel Session Broadcast 16 August 1978

Tracklisting
1. Being Boiled*
2. No Time
3. Blind Youth
4. You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling

"No Time" is an early version of "The Word Before Last".

* Being Boiled was released on the 2011 Various Artists compilation album "Movement: BBC Radio 1 Peel Sessions 1977-1979" and is therefore excluded.

Recorded over a year before the release of their debut album Reproduction, this session features 3 of the 4 tracks recorded (the 4th having been released officially).

Sourced from 2 separate sets of lossless files, this took a lot of work (especially just for 3 tracks) - I fixed several dropouts and clicks and used both sources to get the best quality (copying and pasting parts of songs to remove faults, missing bits, if needed, then blending back together).

Once all that was done, the recording just needed a gentle EQ to improve clarity and boost the low end.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions. You can download it HERE.

Show 137 - The B-52s - Live At Max's Kansas City, New York - 28 May 1978

An exciting early glimpse into The B-52s and how they sounded around the time Rock Lobster was first released on a local Georgia independent record label, before they got signed to a major and worldwide success.

This recording was originally recorded by a legend of the gig taping world, the Grape, using a Uher 134 cassette deck with an AKG A200D microphone. while in the audience - he actually recorded both shows the band played that night. The grape recorded many shows through the 70s and without these people, this site ultimately wouldn't exist, so big thanks to him and others who took the time to do it.

The recording needed a fair bit of tweaking - someone, once upon a time had put a brickwall limiter on it (in layman's terms, boosted loudness as high as it could go on every part of the recording to make it sound "better") which made it boomy and tiring to listen to all the way through. And still muffled. However, with a few studio tricks and EQ, it now sounds much clearer and far more listenable. Bear in mind it is still a cassette recording made from the audience over 40 years ago, but even so, it's a fascinating clip of how the band were early on.

The songs here comprise the first of 2 sets they played that night; the 2nd set replaces Hot Lava with Strobe Light and adds Running Around but is otherwise the same set. If you're interested in me reworking and putting that up as well, then let me know in the comments.

You can download all of this improved recording for free HERE as one 320 kbps MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to support the site with a small donation towards storage subscription and internet costs, in return you can have the remastered show as separate, properly tagged MP3s or even lossless files in FLAC format; head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can do this.

Show 120 - Elvis Costello - Winterland San Francisco - 7 June 1978

An excellent gig from the last night of their USA tour in the middle of 1978, originally recorded from a pre broadcast master so was a pretty clear recording (for once), albeit rather bass light and middly. So for the most part, this just involved 30 band EQ to remove a slightly harsh top end and to bring back the lower end, which was a bit lacking (you could barely hear the bass at times) and to give the instruments and vocals more of their own space in the mix.

What's left is a really good and clear record of an energetic performance on the last night of the US tour.

2020 update: While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording several years ago. You can now download this new version (as of 2020) HERE as 1 new 320kbps MP3 file.

Show 109 - Talking Heads - The Paradiso Amsterdam - 14 January 1978

A first appearance on Live and Loud! for Talking Heads. This is an exciting show taken from a Dutch FM radio broadcast featuring mainly tracks from their first album but also their first single, a track 1 from their 2nd album and 1 track - Let's Work (later known as A Clean Break) - which only ever appeared on a live album. Not quite a full set but then few FM recordings are. Supporting Talking Heads that night was British band XTC as you can see from the flyer below.

The recording was in good condition and responded well 30 band EQ to bring clarity to the instruments and reinforce the bottom end a bit, and a bit of final mastering to finish off. What you have now is a great stereo recording of Talking Heads in between their 1st and 2nd albums.

You can download it for free here as 1 MP3 file.

Show 97 - Average White Band - Belmont Park New York - 23 July 1978

Definitely a show to wear your funky trousers to, this one! The recording I had to work on was a pre-FM recording, originally for later broadcast by 2 stations in the USA. As such, its nicely mixed and clean, if rather flat - and unfortunately the sound rather favoured 1 side more than the other on the copy I had. So I fixed that by remixing the stereo image a little to balance it up and then applied a 30 band EQ to remove that flat feel and inject some life and space into the instruments.

It's a superb stereo recording which really doesn't sound nearly 40 years old. This is a great record of a great live band in total control of their instruments and having a ball on stage, and is well worth downloading.

Show 61 - Sex Pistols - Live at The Great Southeast Music Hall - 5 January 1978

This week, Live and Loud! brings you the Sex Pistols from the very first date of their American tour. The Pistols finally released their debut album "Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols" in October 1977 and were then booked for a 7 date tour of the USA - mainly concentrating on the southern States. By the end of those 7 dates in mid January, the Pistols had played their last gig, and Johnny Rotten had walked away from the band. But this is their first American show.

For this one, mainly I removed some tape noise and EQ'ed to take away the muddiness as much as possible, without trying to polish it - after all, the Pistols never sounded "polished".

Show 51: Devo - The Walker Centre, Minneapolis - 3 November 1978

Devo, at a point in their history before they jumped fully into the synthpop pool and wrote hits like "Whip It". Back in 1978 they were still primarily an edgy, quirky guitar band with synths. Its a great soundboard recording which has polished up really well and sounds first rate.

UPDATE 2018

Raw performance (and recording!) of Blondie from just before they really hit the big time. An FM radio recording, the quality was pretty muddy but some EQ has brought it out a bit and cleared things a little and its a great, raw record of a band about to go global.

Show 16: Ultravox - Marquee, London, UK - 26 December 1978

The last John Foxx-led incarnation of Ultravox, playing at the old Marquee club in London, on Boxing Day (no rest for the wicked!). They'd already released their 3rd (and arguably most influential) album, Systems of Romance and would split up just a few short months later. The set also features two tracks which Ultravox never released - but which would be released later by John Foxx on his first two solo albums.

This was a fairly battered soundboard recording released on vinyl, which had since been through a few generations I think - even so, the studio trickery has made it more than listenable - its a great record of a great band at their creative peak. I remember when I broadcast this, someone got in touch to tell me they were listening and this was the first gig they were ever taken to and what great memories it brought back. Comments like that - and hearing how much people enjoy listening to them - make the time spent on these more than worthwhile.

Show 8: Boomtown Rats - Middlesex Polytechnic, UK, 22 September 1978

This was an FM radio broadcast I found on the web (I forget where) and is a great early show from the Rats - a very powerful performance. This gig catches them at a pivotal point in their career - Rat Trap was due to be released a few weeks later and would become their first number one single in the UK.

While the source was pretty clear and in decent condition luckily, a bit of EQ and remastering certainly hasn't done this any harm at all - enjoy!

*Update 2018*
While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording several years ago. You can now download this new version (as of 2018) HERE as 1 new 320kbps MP3 file.

If you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format of the new version, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.
