Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 216 - ABBA - Live At Stadthalle Vienna - 29 Oct 1979

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind! But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
An audience recording from the time. Originally edited to fit on 2 CDs which has meant some noticeable cuts - the largest one being Waterloo is almost completely gone from the recording and fades out not long after it starts. Fernando has a noticeable "jump" cut at 1 point too, not sure why. A few audience recordings have emerged in recent years - this was the best to work on, despite being recorded from quite far back in the hall. Apart from the cuts, this is the full show.

What Was Done
Several glitches in the recording throughout (originally tape dropouts I think) were fixed. There was a  noticeable "jump" cut in Hole In Your Soul - I edited that so it wasn't as jarring. I also tidied up the gap between Fernando and The Name of The Game (the latter was originally the start of CD2).
I then removed some of the room ambience from the recording to give me more of the band sound to work on, then got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring back some clarity to the sound mix. Once that was all done I then mastered to bring up the vocals a bit, make everything clearer still, more powerful and "wider". The result is a big improvement, I think; I hope fans of ABBA enjoy it.

Show 207 - OMD - Live At Imperial Hotel Blackpool - 27 July 1979

The Show
An audience recording - the earliest known of OMD, or Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark as they were more commonly referred to at the time. It was fairly clear but distant. I guess someone had at least applied some noise and hiss reduction. But it was quite "middly" soundwise with no bottom end at all, and not particularly easy to hear most of the sounds.

What Was Done
There were a few dropouts to fix, and VCL XI unfortunately is incomplete - it cuts off abruptly in the first 2 minutes and there was a big gap before the recording cuts back in before the next song starts, so that was faded out and back in so the sound flows better. Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed that. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, smooth out the rough edges, make everything more audible, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and a little wider (remember this is a mono recording from the audience). The sound is now far better though, and I think makes the gig all the more listenable.

The Show

Another band long overdue an appearance on on the site - The Clash! The file was labeled as a soundboard but given the existing production on it I'm guessing it was done by a radio station as it was pretty well mixed (mostly, anyway), just dull sounding. Some tracks also appeared on a King Biscuit Flower Hour broadcast too, which backs that up. This is from their first tour of Canada and North America - and what better way to start your set in the USA than with...I'm So Bored With The USA!

What Was Done

The usual listen through fixing odd gaps and dropouts and parts where the sound changes noticeably - it went very dull in the first song for about 30 seconds, for example, and there were a few dropouts through the set I fixed. It also sounded like the recording was made up of several recordings cut together - a couple of occasions where applause after a song is cut off and then jumps back in with the next song already starting, and the subsequent songs sound quality was different! So I blended and tweaked those to fit seamlessly together as much as possible. There's one song where guitar appears on the right, very over cooked and loud; I took that down as much as possible. Recording levels in places are a little hot but nothing bad enough to detract from making this available. I then got to work with EQ, compression and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and clearer, more powerful.

A long overdue debut on this site for The Cure. Taken from their first national tour (after supporting the Banshees on theirs just a few months earlier) this audience recording came to me as a .wav file from a fan - a regular listener to Live and Loud! Shows, who asked if I could improve it.

It was very toppy, thin and boxy sounding - very little in the bass end and a lot in the mids and high end. After removing some of the reverb from the recording to bring back more music signal to work on, I removed tape noise and repaired where the tape stopped (and turned over, I imagine!) at the end of 1 song so that song fades nicely into the start of the next. Then repaired some odd clicks and noises and the odd tape dropout. Only then did I get to work on the sound and enhance what bass there was, buried away, while trying to bring more clarity and weight to the sound as a whole.

A 2nd appearance for Joe Jackson on Live and Loud! (you can find the first restored gig of his I did a few years ago, right HERE).

This was an FM radio broadcast, originally broadcast in February 1980, and was donated by a listener to Live and Loud! a couple of years ago (sometimes it takes a while to get through these - sorry about that...!). I had to correct the pitch and speed as it was running too fast and was about a semi-tone high. It was also really noisy - FM radio noise - so I removed as much of that as I could without damaging the important stuff (the music and singing). There was only 1 really audible glitch on 1 song - fixed that. Once all that was done, I then got to work on the EQ and restoration of the sound, making the drums more punchy, creating space, with everything clearer than it was, then mastering.

The result is a really clear, powerful, stereo recording. You can now download the repaired, restored and remastered version of this show exclusively for free, right HERE as one 320kbps MP3 file.

Kicking off the 2022 restorations with this brilliant, stereo show from Skids, from their tour of the UK supporting their debut album, Scared To Dance. The information with this said it was a soundboard recording but it wouldn't surprise me if this was actually an FM recording - the basic mix was really good and there's audience noise, which is often missing on soundboards. There were also a couple of edits already in the source files where audience noise was cut.

Anyway, first job was removing quite a few tape dropouts from either the left or right channel. After that, it was EQ and some studio toys to revitalise the recording and make it clearer and less flat, before moving on to mastering to finish things off and bring the best out of the existing sound quality. The result is a really clear, powerful gig by one of Scotland's finest bands (in my humble opinion, anyway). And yes, some songs are played twice!

Show 165 - Gary Numan - Live At Manchester Apollo - 26 Sept 1979

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. The Show

Live recordings of Gary Numan from his first national tour in 1979 are few and far between - and those that exist in the public domain (all audience recordings) are very poor quality generally. But thanks to a few donations over the last year or so, I have been able to invest in better restoration and mastering software, so I thought I'd have a go at repairing this one - not quite realising just how much time it would take up!

What Was Done

You can hear a snippet of what the BEST of the original recording sounded like in the intro to the show but this one took a lot of work. A brief list of things fixed for this one...All these things listed are now gone, as best as I can do, so don't worry.. ;-)

First thing I did was reduce the hall "reverb" - the show sounded like it was recorded from the back of the hall (or possibly from the toilet in the bar outside the hall...!) and the band were a long way away. It was hissy (of course). Recording levels were low. Bass distortion in places too. It was too fast and high pitched, there were odd gaps, tape dropouts so all the way through the volume was up and down on the left and right channels (not always at the same time), the sound COMPLETELY changing in quality for a couple of seconds...why? Maybe the mic was hidden in a jacket which opened up for a few seconds, who knows...

There were also some random beeps part way through, which had nothing to do with the gig - I can only think whoever transferred this to digital format used demo software that inserted the beeps! There were also a whole bunch of scuffling banging noises - I think the tape recorder was being moved about during the first few songs and the mic was brushing something.

Sadly, the last part of "Bombers" is missing - I guess that's where the tape ran out and needed turning over. Some things I can't restore - rather than it just STOP as it did on the original, I faded it out and back in as it goes into Remember I Was Vapour. And finally - of course, being recorded from a tape recorder in a hall full of people in 1979, it was in mono.

Once all the above was worked on, only THEN did I get to EQ and use the sound improving tools to improve the sound. In all, this was probably the equivalent in man hours of several days work. Working on a show like this there will always be some compromise in the final EQ choices and it was never going to sound as clear as Living Ornaments 79 of course - or even the full Living Ornaments 80 from Manchester (that was originally a soundboard recording, so far clearer source material) but I think you now have an alternative 1979 live show which is finally listenable!

Show 153 - Bill Nelson's Red Noise - Live at Sheffield City Hall - 13 March 1979

A first gig for Bill Nelson on the Live and Loud! archive (hopefully not the last) with his short lived band Red Noise with a gig from their one and only tour in support of their album Sound On Sound.

This was an FM broadcast from the time, so isn't the complete show. It was, at some point doctored by someone else as the levels were high and there were signs of compression too (but only on the last track, strangely, so that needed treating separately). There were quite a few stereo imaging issues too, and some of the recording level was a little high, resulting in some clipping or distortion.

After running various toys over the audio, then EQ and a little noise reduction. plus correcting the stereo image where I could, this is the final result - loud bits under control, lots less distortion and far clearer. Red Noise were a powerful live band and I think this recording now brings that out!

You can safely download this restored, unique recording for free HERE as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way. Show 151 - Devo - Live At The Palladium Dallas Texas - 4 Aug 1979

A welcome return for Devo to the Live and Loud! archives. Shows from their Duty Now For The Future tour are fairly rare so I was glad to come across this one, containing several unreleased gems.

Although my copy of this gig in lossless format didn't come from there directly, I must give a big shoutout to the guys at Booji Boy's Basement who transferred the original taped material and have been maintaining an online archive accessible to fans for many years.

Although it is an audience recording, and had a few faults, I've been able to upgrade the sound quality a lot. I removed some of the room ambience you always get with audience shows, fixed some errors and tape drop outs, some clicks, pops and odd noises, did what I could with some overloaded volume as well as slowed the pitch and speed a little as it was running too fast. After all that, I used a bit of studio magic, 30 band EQ and finally some mastering tools to finish off.

You can safely download this restored recording for free HERE as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way. Or, if you would like to support the site with a small donation towards storage, subscription and internet costs, in return you can have the remastered show as separate, properly tagged MP3s or lossless files in FLAC format; head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can do this.

Either way - enjoy the show! And don't forget to check out the other Devo shows on the site!

Show 130 - XTC - Live At The Rainbow, London - 17 September 1979

A second show for the archive from XTC, this time from 1979. This was a soundboard recording, ripped from a vinyl copy originally I think. It's a great gig, with a setlist spanning their career to date, from the 3D EP to the recently released Drums and Wires.

I removed some vinyl rumble and hiss, as well as evening out the volume between some tracks which were oddly very loud or pretty quiet. Once all that was done, I then set about clarifying the recording with 30 band EQ. Oddly, Battery Brides was far more bass heavy than other tracks - like someone had tweaked it before, or the song had been put in from a different copy of the recording. So that got tweaked separately to more closely match the other songs in the set.

You can download all of this improved recording for free here as one 320 kbps MP3 file.

Show 121 - Joe Jackson - Live At Old Waldorf, San Francisco - 14 May 1979

A lively set from part way through their USA tour following the release of the debut album, Look Sharp!, featuring plenty of chat in between songs. The set features a few covers, alongside most of Look Sharp! and some songs that would feature on the soon-to-be-released 2nd album, I'm The Man.

This was a fairly clear recording of an FM broadcast, albeit rather harsh on the ears at times. So for the most part, this just involved 30 band EQ to remove the harshness and restore some balance to the bottom end, and to give the instruments and vocals more of their own space in the mix.

You can download this improved recording for free here as one 320 kbps MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to support the site with a very small donation and in return receive separate, properly tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can do this.

Either way - enjoy the show!

Show 94 - The Skids - The Odeon, Edinburgh - 7 September 1979

There seem to be very few recordings available for Skids and most of those are audience recordings. However, I did find online a good stereo recording of a full gig from 1979 a month before the first release of Days In Europa.

However, the copy online is damaged - the cassette it was stored on had deteriorated to the point that at several points the sound drops in places. So this one currently takes the prize for longest time spent restoring and repairing! I spent several hours going through and trying to restore what I could - some parts I could fix completely, some only partially fixed - ultimately there are still faults here and there but they're far less than before.

After that, I used the 30 band EQ to enhance the bass, drums and guitar and create space between the instruments as per usual. The keyboards are still a bit too loud in the mix (not much I could do about those) but this is a great gig and well worth downloading. You can hear the band warm up as the gig continues and after the first few songs they're on fire.

Update 2019
While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording several years ago. You can now download this new version (as of 2019) HERE as 1 new 320kbps MP3.

Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.

Radio Prog 1 - Nash The Slash CBC FM August 1979

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, starting January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 1:  Nash The Slash: "Goldrush" on CBC-FM, August 1979

Tracklisting
1 DJ Intro
2 In A Glass Eye
3 Baba O'Riley
4 Wolf
5 DJ Outro

The session is available as a zip file, containing each track. You can get it by clicking here.

Original files had noise reduction applied via Izotope RX5 and then 30 band EQ to remove mid range muddiness and enhance bass and upper frequencies, creating more "space" in the tracks between the instruments. I didn't take away every last bit of hiss - frankly that can also remove a lot of the recording and end up sounding awful. Ultimately this is about preserving the music. But believe me, there was a lot more hiss on the original source files.

Some clicks and tape dropouts have also been repaired - you won't hear where. :)  The ones you can hear, I couldn't fix without access to a better copy (which may not exist, who knows?).

If you know anyone who wants a copy of these tracks, I'd rather you redirect anyone to this page for a copy but if you do redistribute please use the original zip with the tracks and info file! Thank you. :)

Show 77: OMD - Live at The Electric Ballroom London - 7 December 1979

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit - as someone has already happened with this show and then tried to deny it (you know who you are). Thanks.

It's been a while since I did an OMD gig - but only because I hadn't found any recordings to do! I had a donation of quite a large number of recordings of various bands recently and I was really pleased to find this one among them.

The original recording is from the soundboard but had tape hiss and was quite tinny with virtually no bass - most of what you could hear was vocals and synths that were too bright. Gentle noise reduction and EQ helped with that. There were also a few defects that needed fixing which took a while, including correcting the pitch and repairing some dropouts. Considering the age of the recording and the bad mix on the night - Andy's voice is often far too loud - its very very listenable now; I hope you enjoy the result. At the start of Messages listen out for Andy imploring the sound engineer "can you turn the organ down?"!

At the time of this recording, OMD were more well known as Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark and they'd already signed a major record deal with DinDisc, a subsidiary of Virgin records. A new version of Electricity had been released as a single to coincide with them coming to national attention as the support act on Gary Numan’s debut UK tour which ran through September and October 1979.

Their debut album was a couple of months away at the time of this gig - the first of 2 nights, supporting Talking Heads at The Electric Ballroom. This is a rare chance to enjoy a very early version of OMD, when they were a 3 piece consisting of Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys...and a TEAC reel to reel tape recorder called Winston.

Show 73: Ultravox - Live at The Whisky A Go Go, Los Angeles - 30 December 1979

Its been a while since we last featured one of my favourite bands from the 1970s and 1980s, Ultravox. So I’ve remastered a gig from an interesting point in their history! And broken one of my own rules to do it...

This is an audience recording! But apart from some very brief moments when someone is close to the mic (especially at the beginning), you can barely tell. Its a great performance, very raw and exciting. This one has been subject to some judicious EQ, level balancing and noise reduction and has polished up really well.

Original singer John Foxx left after they began 1979 with no record company, after being dropped, and after a short tour of the USA (there’s a remastered gig from Philadelphia on that tour on the Live and Loud! Archive already HERE). It seemed Ultravox were finished until keyboard player Billy Currie, who had been working with Midge Ure in Visage, persuaded him he should become Ultravox’s new singer (it may actually have been Ure persuading Currie!). Without a record deal, Ultravox reconvened, wrote some songs and arranged to play some live dates in America in November and December 1979 - and we have a recording of the last show from that tour for you this time.

It’s not quite the full set - Hiroshima Mon Amour and, I think,  King's Lead Hat are missing, sadly - but what IS there, from set opener Astradyne to set closer I Can't Stay Long, is a great record of a band enjoying themselves and gelling - they went on to sign a record deal in early 1980 and included many of the new songs played at this gig on their first album as a quartet, Vienna. The set also features a few tracks from the last album with John Foxx (Systems of Romance) as well as an early version of a song which didn’t make it onto record at all (at least, not as a studio recording).

There are more Ultravox shows to come, so be sure to come back! In the meantime, this show is now available for free download HERE as 1 MP3 file.

Show 62 - The Ramones - Live at City Hall Plaza San Francisco - 8 June 1979

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

***2023 UPDATE***

This show has now been re-restored from scratch, and improved a lot I think. The sound was pretty thin on the original recording with the drums barely audible. Noise reduction first and then out came the toys; I've been able to beef up the sound rather more now and bring some more of the raw power that was The Ramones playing live. Download it from the link below and let me know what you think!

The new version of this show is available to download or stream HERE as 1 MP3 file.

A band hugely influential on punk rock - The Ramones, in an outdoor concert in San Francisco. Its sobering that of this lineup, only Marky Ramone is still with us;  Johnny, Joey and Dee Dee, all passing away some years ago.

Some parts of this gig at least are available on video on youtube. The sound of those, like the original audio I obtained elsewhere is quite muddy and dull. So this one had tape noise removed and some EQ to bring out the drums a bit and take away the harshness of the sound and try to make things sound a bit fuller overall. In common with many gigs, the sound balance is a bit off at the start but quickly improves as the sound engineer sorted things out on the first song. Anyway! Enjoy it!

Show 59: The Specials - Live at The Lyceum, London - 2 December 1979

The Specials formed in Coventry in 1977 and after some lineup changes and the formation of the 2-Tone record label by the band’s leader Jerry Dammers, saw their first single, Gangsters, become a top 10 hit in the UK in the Summer of 1979. October saw the release of their first album, also called The Specials, which featured a number of tracks you can hear in tonight’s show. In December 1979, at a time when their 2nd single, A Message To You Rudy, was becoming their 2nd top 10 hit, and a month before they went straight to #1 with The Special AKA Live! EP, featuring Too Much Too Young.

A brief word about this show - I think it was originally for French radio, as someone is babbling away in French in between some of the songs - I’ve taken that out without losing the songs but some of the gaps between songs are very short as a result! Maybe I should have left it in but it was fairly loud and annoying to me. So its a fairly breathless gallop through the set for about 40 minutes from 2Tone’s finest!

This show is dedicated to the memory of John Bradbury, The Specials’ drummer, who sadly passed away at the age of 62 over Xmas 2015.

Show 58: Japan - Live at Budokan, Tokyo - 6 March 1979

The new 2016 season of Live and Loud! kicks off with Japan, who were touring the country of Japan after releasing their first 2 albums Adolescent Sex and Obscure Alternatives, in 1978. They were already looking ahead and starting to introduce a more electronic sound into their demos for what would be their 3rd album Quiet Life, released at the end of 1979. You can start to hear that influence in the early version of European Son, included in this live set, which otherwise consists of songs from their first 2 albums.

Someone had already applied far too much noise and hiss reduction to the recording I had access to but I've done what I can to lessen the impact of the noise that added. This has polished up a treat.

Show 54: The Police - Roxy Theatre, San Diego, USA - 16 May 1979

The Police were one of the biggest bands of the early 1980s - but this show captures them in concert just before they hit the bigtime.

They had released their first album, Outlandos d’Amour in November 1978 and initially it didn’t do too well - the first two singles from the album, Roxanne and Can’t Stand Losing You, having flopped some months earlier. In early 1979 however, Roxanne was released in the USA and met with some success - The Police duly set off on a low budget tour of the USA, driving themselves around in a van - and that success led to Roxanne being re-issued and making the UK top 20. After this tour they finished recording their 2nd album, Regatta de Blanc. The 1st single from that, Message In A Bottle (played on this tour for the first time), got to #1 in the UK and...well, the rest is history.

Show 52: Kate Bush - Manchester Apollo - April 1979

A great show to kick off the latest series of Live and Loud! Until 2014, Kate Bush hadn't toured since her Tour of Life in 1979. So why not find a show from that tour, polish it up and bring it to you? This show takes you back to 1 of the Manchester Apollo dates on that tour in April 1979.  The tour was a lavish affair, featuring multiple costume changes, poetry, magicians and back projections - none of which we can bring you of course! But what we CAN bring you is a polished up and (apart from a few brief parts where the tape was degraded) great sounding soundboard recording. This is the full show, running to nearly 2 hours a great set of songs which has cleaned up nicely - I hope you enjoy it.
