Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 222 - Simple Minds - Live at the Musicians Club Sydney - 3 Dec 1981

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
Recorded originally by Australian radio station JJJ, it was clear someone had worked on this at some point - the volume was maxed out right across the recording, which is a common mistake. The last track, Room was from a totally different recording and added on the end, after everything had faded out. Every internet source I could find tells me it IS the performance of Room from that show, though, so it stayed. The band seemed to have sound issues especially early on during the first song, so you will still hear evidence of that.

An extra bit of background to this show from a listener: I was at this show. The Musicians Club isn't a very big venue and the crowd waiting to get in was massive!!!. Hundreds were turned away. There was a heat wave and the place was like an oven, but an amazing show. Simple Minds were really popular in Australia. They returned the following year and played in a place called Manly, in a much bigger venue. That show also went live to air on 2 JJJ.

What Was Done
It was rather hard on the ears and muddy and muffled. Still much better than many but definitely improvable.  Several gaps and dropouts fixed. Once that was done, I got to work with the usual studio toys to clean up the recording and make it clearer, then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall. The last track had to be worked on separately and I blended that in with the crowd noise at the end of the main set, so it sounds less "added on". The gig sounds really good now I think; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Show 215 - Japan - Live At Rock City Nottingham - 7 May 1981

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
This is a fairly muffled and "distant" mono audience recording of the first night of the "Art of Parties" tour of the UK in May 1981, featuring the first live appearance of their new single at the time - The Art Of Parties. It was sent to me by a listener, asking if it could be cleaned up. I was initially dubious (quality really wasn't too good) but after sending him a free sample of 1 of the tracks done, this was then done as a private commission. My client was so pleased with the final result he offered it for the website as well, so that others could enjoy it! So here it is.

What Was Done
The recording was, like many old audience recordings, muffled and sounding quite far away, with a few odd cuts and gaps here and there. Quite a bit of feedback in places too.

All those gaps and cuts were removed and blended, so the recording is whole again. Feedback I was able to remove for the most part. A big part of the hall ambience was then reduced, which gave me more of the band sound to work on. I could then get to work with EQ and my box of studio tools to make the band clearer and far more audible. Once that was done, I mastered the whole thing to give the recording some power and width.

The result is a big improvement. I hope fans of the band will enjoy it as much as my client has.

Show 214 - Queen - Live At Estadio José Amalfitani, Buenos Aires - 28 February 1981

But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Thanks.

The Show
A stereo recording from the mixing desk (mostly!) of the first of several groundbreaking gigs played in Argentina. This has appeared in various bootleg issues over the years of various lengths (the venue is also known as the Vélez Sarsfield Stadium, after the football team that plays there). I came across a copy of the most complete version of the gig. One track (Get Down Make Love) - and the outro of God Save The Queen weren't on the original stereo recording but recordings of those from the night taken from a mono AM radio broadcast (with a rather excitable radio announcer!) were mixed in at a later date to make up the complete gig.

What Was Done
The recording (the stereo parts anyway) was basically in OK shape although muffled and not very clear - not much bottom or top end; the bits from AM radio were plagued by AM radio interference. Plus of course the AM tracks (in mono) sound very very different to the rest of the gig.

After listening to the whole recording, I split apart the stereo and mono parts so I could work on them separately. The AM radio parts had the buzzing interference reduced as much as I could without affecting the overall sound, and the sound then improved and mastered, making them wider to more closely blend with the stereo recording. The stereo parts were worked on to bring more clarity and impact to the sound mix - all instruments and voices can now be heard much clearer - before mastering and then blending the stereo and mono parts back together.

The result is a big improvement I think and deserves to be played loud; I'm really pleased with this one and I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

The Show
A stereo FM recording from the time. Not in bad shape but pretty muffled sounding and flat, with some voiceovers and issues.

What Was Done
I had to chop out a random bit of continuity announcer early in the gig, remove a gap after repairing the end of 1 song, and removed voice overs before and after the encores. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity back. Then final mastering to make it more powerful overall and balance the sound better. The result is a great sounding gig.

Show 197 - Kraftwerk - Live At The Ritz New York - August 1981

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
An audience recording from either the 3 or 4 August. The original bootleg has appeared credited to both dates - Kraftwerk played both nights at this venue. There are performances here that you can imagine the likes of Afrika Bambaataa standing watching and taking on board as influences - the likes of It's More Fun To Compute especially.

What Was Done
The sound quality and volume varied widely from bright to muffled, so I did what I could to even that out. There are a few small cuts where the sound jumps - I smoothed those out as best I could but missing are a few seconds of Metal on Metal/Abzug, the beginning of Pocket Calculator brief parts between Pocket Calculator and The Robots, and early on in It's More Fun To Compute. There are a couple of points during the gig where the bass synths were so loud they literally rattled the PA and overloaded the recording a bit (brief bits of distortion, in other words). I've done what I could to reduce the effect of that.

Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix - this took a long time this time, given how varied the sound quality was throughout. I then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and wider. The result is far far better and a really good listen; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

But a credit to this website where you found it and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it, cut out the intro and outro and take the credit. Thanks.

The Show
Originally an FM radio broadcast and not quite the complete gig - some encores are missing, I think. It sounded a bit "tinny" although it was pretty clear. According to the blurb with the bootleg, Happy House was recorded from a later broadcast of the same show. There are a couple of versions of this bootleg out there - 1 with fewer tracks than the other. And the setlist listed on Setlist.fm for this venue doesn't even have Happy House listed at all! Setlist.fm isn't always accurate, so who knows... Happy House is listed at some other gigs around that time as being played as an encore, so I went with what the text file accompanying the bootleg said, and blended it in on the end here.

What Was Done
I removed various things like a bad click after Nightshift, a weird short hum and quite a lot of FM interference noise from Voodoo Dolly. On the original, Voodoo Dolly was cut off and Happy House started - I faded out the former, while editing the latter so it blends together better. Volume was a bit up and down in places - fixed that.

Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring back some bottom end to the recording and some clarity to the sound mix - you can hear Steve Severin's bass far better now and John McGeoch's guitar sings clearly without hurting your ears. Budgie's drums are also clearer. I then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall. The result is really really good; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Another great live performance from Slade, this time from 1981's Til Deaf Us Do Part tour. This is actually 2 recordings. Most is from an audience recording, but parts of the gig were broadcast on FM radio. Someone at some point stuck them together to make the whole gig but there were overlapping bits. And teh sound quality wasn't very good. So I've done my best to clean up the recordings, and then blend them together.

Noise, tape dropouts, uneven levels and finally very muddy sound quality all got tackled. The final part was splitting up the tracks, removing overlapping parts and blending everything back together. And then mastering the whole thing. As often happens, the first track is probably the worst sounding but after that it improves considerably.

Show 164 - Genesis - Live At Wembley Arena - 19 December 1981

But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit. Thanks.

A first appearance on Live and Loud! for Genesis, in a restored live audience recording taken from one of the last dates of their Abacab tour of 1981 at Wembley Arena.

Originally a vinyl triple album bootleg, the files I acquired were a direct transfer (in lossless FLAC format) from that. And pretty quiet. And noisy. And not the clearest recording I've ever heard, if I'm honest! I could write a small book on what I did with this one but I will spare you the gory details and summarise...

Vinyl crackle was very loud, recording level of the music was pretty low...crackle removed.
It was an audience recording from an arena, so lots of reverb...so that meant reducing the reverb ambience and ensuring the music levels were louder so I could work on them.
Recording levels were up and down all the way through...so I tried to increase the low levels as much as possible and even out the tape dropouts where they appear, without sounding like it was compressed or limited too much. It's now far better in that regard but not perfect. The perils of automatic recording levels back in the day, I guess. Ssssome pretty bad sssSSSibilance too in places...I did what I could to tone that down.

Eventually I had a sound file to get to work on, with EQ and other studio toys to clear up the muddy sound, bring out some details and dynamics where I could and generally make it a nicer listening experience.

Do be aware there is a long (and slightly rude) story from Phil Collins before 1 song - I left it in along with all his introductions as they're part of the gig experience - but I only mention it here to say there is part of it missing from the recording. At a guess, maybe this was where someone had to turn the tape over on the night, I don't know. There is also 1 track missing from the set - the last track ("I Know What I Like") wasn't included on the recording.

It will never sound like a crystal clear FM or soundboard recording but it's substantially more listenable - and enjoyable! - now. You can now download this restored show exclusively for free HERE as 1 (rather large - it's around 2 hours) MP3 file.

A debut to Live and Loud! from The Passions. This show was sent in by a listener - but I can't find the emails telling me who! If it was you, reply to my last email to you and I'll sort you out with separated copies! Thanks.

I'm guessing this was originally broadcast by Dutch FM radio. It was mainly good soundwise except for some tape dropouts and volume dips. And many cases of really bad sibilance. All of these I have tried to fix as well as I could, before then EQing the recording to have it sounding as good as possible. It is crystal clear now, so I hope you enjoy it.

Unfortunately the final song, The Swimmer, does fade out quite early - well, on the recording I was given, it just gets cut off, but I applied a fade, so the ending doesn't come as a shock!

The show is now available to download exclusively for free here as 1 MP3 file.

A rare but energetic and powerful set from Ultravox this time - at least, excerpts from one. I think this must have been a radio broadcast as the source was in stereo. I thought with it being only 6 tracks, it would be quick and simple! I never learn - it rarely works out that way... :-)

The recording was too fast to start with, so needed slowing down a bit.

There was also a lot of hum and noise - took quite a while to remove as much of that as possible without damaging the sound quality.

Then a few tape dropouts and the usual 30 band EQ to bring the sound up to scratch and make it clearer.

For one track on the source, the intro was slightly incomplete so I fixed it (I challenge you to spot which song that was).

For All Stood Still there had already been done some editing to fade in the song, missing off the beginning altogether But quite by chance I found a Dutch TV broadcast online with 4 songs from this set in it (albeit in the wrong order), including a complete version of the song in question (a link to the video is below, it's really good)! The only problem was that the video was in mono...so I grabbed the video soundtrack and messed about with it a lot to make it more closely match the other songs, then put it all together with the other 5 songs I'd already done. When you listen now, or watch the video, you will notice Chris Cross's bass synth intro is in the wrong key! Midge Ure goes over to him and tells him what the correct key is...I guess for radio, they decided to cut that out and fade it in from where it was ok...Me, I like the mistakes - makes it all sound far more human and imperfect.

This recording, therefore, is unique to Live and Loud! Shows - until other bootleg sites take it, change the artwork and call it theirs, anyway.

You can safely download all of this improved recording for free HERE as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no nasty pop ups or ads getting in the way.

Or, if you would like to support the site with a small donation towards storage subscription and internet costs, in return you can have the remastered show as separate, properly tagged MP3s or even lossless files in FLAC format; head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can do this.

Either way - enjoy the show!

Show 142 - Ian Dury and The Blockheads - Live At The Pinkpop Festival Netherlands - 8 June 1981

Very happy to finally have the chance to remaster a set by Ian Dury and The Blockheads - such a great band to hear live. This was the full headlining set at the Pinkpop Festival in 1981, with UB40 and Madness on set earlier in the day (you can hear Dury calling them to the stage during the last song - and from a brief video on Youtube, UB40 turn up but only Mike Barson (I think) from Madness makes an appearance (and you can hear him briefly singing too!).

This wasn't in bad condition - guessing an FM recording - but the mix and sound balance is a bit ropey in places. I did what I could to fix that and EQ'ed to improve clarity and the bottom end - you couldn't hear the drums and bass much at all; now you can.

You can safely download all of this improved recording for free HERE as one 320 kbps MP3 file with no pop up ads getting in the way.

Radio Prog 7 - A Flock Of Seagulls - John Peel Session Broadcast 12 May 1981

**UPDATE February 2023**

AFOS' excellent eponymously titled debut album has just been remastered and re-released, with a whole shedload of extras, INCLUDING the first official release of this radio session, so as of now, I've removed the link to my version.**

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, which started in January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 7 - A Flock Of Seagulls - John Peel Session Broadcast 12 May 1981
Tracklisting

1. Talking (It's Not Me Talking)
2. Messages From The Rings Of Saturn
3. I Ran
4. Committed

Recorded before the release of their first single and almost a year before the release of their first album, this features 4 tracks, 2 of which bear their longer, original titles.

Sourced from MP3 files, I fixed 1 or 2 dropout faults in the recording, some clicks, plus having to use a 2nd source to fix 1 small section which faded out early (see if you can tell where). After that, I applied 30 band EQ to clear up the flat and slightly muddy sound. Mainly a little bottom end, some reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and boosting a little top end when that was lacking. This allows the drums and bass to breathe a bit, the guitar to shimmer in it's own space and the vocals to be clearer.

LINK REMOVED. Page for information only.

Tracklisting
1. Black Mask
2. Greensborough
3. Walls Of Jericho
4. Jazz The Glass

Sourced from lossless files, compared to some this was pretty straight forward - some tape hiss was removed, a few clicks, then 30 band EQ, which varied for each track as rach track is quite different - some had more than others. Mainly a little bottom end, some reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and rolling off the top end when that was a bit hard on the ears.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 and FLAC versions as a free bonus for those of you who like lossless!***LINK REMOVED***

Show 113 - DAF - Live In Germany - 9 May 1981

A debut on Live and Loud! for D.A.F - Deutsch Americanische Freundschaft. This was originally an FM broadcast of excerpts from a show (guessing from a German radio station) and another where someone had "restored" it at some stage and just turned everything up to 11... In fact, some parts of the recording had more bass, louder or with more high end than other parts at different times, so it was a bit of a job to try and get everything sounding better and clearer AND more consistent...but there aren't many good recordings of DAF available so I think this has been worth the work!

A good show in support of their then recently released 3rd album, Alles Ist Gut. Incidentally the track Fass Micht Nicht An later made an appearance on the album Gold und Liebe as Verschwende Deine Jugend.

You can download the recording for free here as 1 320kbps MP3 file entirely for free.

On the other hand, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.

Show 110 - OMD - Live In Toronto - 24 April 1981

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit (you know who you are). Thanks.

Another show from OMD, this time from their tour of North America and Canada in early 1981 - this gig from the Masonic Temple in Toronto (thanks to a listener for the location!) makes an interesting contrast to the gig from Germany just 4 months earlier (you can grab that here).

This was an FM recording which wasn't in the best shape. A few of the edits between songs are quite severe (not much I can do there) but more seriously there were quite a few tape dropouts - these have been repaired/reduced and most are gone altogether. And whoever recorded it had problems with some of the synth bass overloading and distorting occasionally, so I ended up using different EQ settings on 1 or 2 songs while I was improving the sound quality so I didn't make things worse! It came together pretty well in the end. It's a great show; the band are full of energy and despite the odd few bum notes that appear, it's a great gig (or at least, excerpts from a gig!).

You can download it for free here as 1 MP3 file.

Show 96 - Fatal Charm - Paris Theatre London - 1981

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Don't just steal it and take the credit. Thanks.

Fatal Charm were formed in 1978 in Nottingham and made a name for themselves in support slots for both OMD and Ultravox in 1980. They continued to write and record in various lineups through the 1980s.

I was lent a cassette with this recording on it, along with the 2 tracks from the flexi disc they used to give out at gigs. Those 2 tracks are included on the compilation album "Plastic", which can still be bought from the shop on the band's website, so I've taken them off the recording here. What you have left is this rather short recording from an FM broadcast of excerpts from their 1981 live set recorded at the BBC's Paris Theatre, in Lower Regent Street, London.

Anyway, the recording was good quality and hadn't really degraded with age, so no major repairs were needed other than some noise reduction and volume balancing. Then it was out with the trusty 30 band EQ to improve clarity and space between the instruments and improve the bottom end somewhat of what was a rather flat recording; hopefully its a far clearer mix now than it ever was.

The show is available for free download here as 1 MP3 file.

The session is available as a zip file, containing each track. You can get it by clicking HERE.

Original files had 30 band EQ to remove mid range muddiness and enhance bass and upper frequencies, creating more "space" in the tracks between the instruments.Other than that, I just edited the end of each track to fade out better than the copies I had.

* Boys Say Go is not included as it was released officially on the "1 And Only - 25 Years Of Radio 1" album in 1992.

Show 90: Duran Duran - Capitaine Video Club Paris - 8 September 1981

This time its Duran Duran from their very first trip into Europe, after the release of their debut album. The recording is unfortunately quite short, from a French FM broadcast, and in common with several other French FM broadcasts I have, the presenters do like to talk in between songs quite a bit!  I guess to stop home taping - thankfully though, someone saved this for posterity. The story is that with it being recorded for broadcast, apparently EMI paid for Duran fans from Birmingham to be ferried over to Paris for this gig, to ensure there was a crowd!

The recording was at the wrong speed (Fame was scooting along at warp speed...) so I've slowed it down a bit. After some hiss reduction and EQ to even out the sound and put some space between the instruments, it was done.

There will no doubt be a 3rd Duran Duran show up on the site in a few months. In the meantime, the show is now available to download exclusively for free here as 1 MP3 file.

Show 70: B-Movie - Live at Rock City Nottingham - 21 February 1981

B-Movie formed in 1979, releasing 2 EPs in 1980. They ultimately released a few singles over the years but never an album until 1985 - by which time their time had perhaps been and gone - the lack of success of which contributing to them finally calling it a day, after several lineup changes.

This gig came just weeks after they featured on the Some Bizarre album, a compilation album also featuring the then unknown Depeche Mode, Blancmange, Soft Cell and The The, amongst others. The single they're perhaps most known for is Remembrance Day - and that was about to be released shortly after this gig.

The B-Movie story didn’t end in 1985 of course - since then they’ve got back together with the original lineup a few times and in March 2016 released a brand new album called Climate of Fear on download, CD and vinyl! Well worth checking out (I bought the CD).

But back to 1981... The recording of this gig I got was so noisy, it sounded like they performed in a wind tunnel! However, some careful noise reduction, speed correction and judicious use of EQ has really helped rescue this one - it sounds far better now. I hope you enjoy this rare live recording from a band that are so often overlooked when people talk about "the 80s".

Show 65: Depeche Mode - Rafters, Manchester - 5 August 1981

Its been a while since I did a Depeche Mode show and this is the last really early show I have from them. This appeared as a bootleg called A Second Now, I believe and is somewhat famous for being the gig where they were reviewed and slagged off by someone who went on to be in a band called The Smiths (!) as you can see below.

Anyway, a gig placed somewhere between New Life being released and Just Can't Get Enough, so still the original quartet of Andy, Vince, Dave and Martin...Vince left just a few months later. I've broken my "no audience recordings" rule for this season of Live and Loud! but some EQ, rebalancing of the sound and mastering has improved the recording a treat. Compare this with the other early shows I did from DM here. This is the last one I have, I think, from when Vince was with them, so I hope you enjoy it.

UPDATE 2019
While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording back in 2015. You can now download this new version (as of 2019) HERE as 1 new 320kbps MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.
