The Show
A cassette recording of a "coast to coast" live FM broadcast from the time, apparently uploaded to the internet many years ago by the original taper - unnamed on the notes but thanks to him for the raw material and making it available! As such it includes the original radio disc jockey who introduces the show and chats while the band go off for a break before coming back for a final encore Girls On Film - which, bizarrely he announces they're likely to play before they come back on.

What Was Done
Fairly clear but flat, would be a good description. Only an inexplicable drop in volume here and there needed fixing, and some low level hum removing before I got to work on improving the sound quality with EQ and the usual studio toys. That brought back much clarity and power to the sound mix, and then once mastered, that finished it off nicely. 

The result is really really clear and powerful - showcasing how good a live band they were at that time and sounds far more live (which it is, after all) than the Arena official live release from that tour. 

Normally I take out any radio links etc from FM broadcasts but I left the DJ on this (apart from the very end after Girls On Film), just because I thought it would be an extra interesting historical snapshot of US radio at that time. Especially for those of us here in the UK, not exposed to that before. And you can hear him announce to everyone that the band will come back on and play Girls On Film before they do...! What was he thinking...

The Show
Someone back in 1984 had the idea to record this live off their FM radio - it was apparently a live broadcast and not pre-recorded, or broadcast later. And years later that tape was digitised and put on the web - can't remember where I found it but it was some years back. This is nothing like the Berlin most people have heard (that Top Gun song, which they had nothing to do with, for example) - this is far more early 80s new wave/synth stuff,with a few tracks showing a definite hint of Giorgio Moroder in there.  If you don't know Berlin but like The Cars, Devo etc, you might well find something to like here.

What Was Done
Happily it was in basically sound condition but very very flat and muffled. I removed a couple of odd noises and some low end hum but most of the work was just making the whole thing sound so much clearer. Once that was done, mastering took it to another level and made it more powerful overall. The result is really really good - clear and powerful.

The Show
A stereo FM broadcast from the time, released onto the internet by the original taper (at least according to the notes).  Featuring tracks from his debut album No Parlez as well as a couple of rarities, this is a great performance. Thanks to him (or her) for making this available. It's not as short a show as it looks - the set does last about 1 hour, with the last track being 12 minutes of the band flexing their musical muscles - well worth a listen.

What Was Done
A big click on the intro was removed, some mains hum and then a small tape drop out. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and wider. The result is clearer, more punchy and more solid; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Another Gary Numan show for you this time. This was a very good audience recording, which responded well to some studio toys to clean up the sound, make it clearer and give it a bit more "oomph". All the drums, bass, guitar and synths are rather clearer now. 

There are a few cuts in the recording and 2 small ones remain which I couldn't fix - during Berserker, the recording skips a couple of seconds during Karen Taylor's solo vocal part way through, and the intro and first note of Down In The Park was missing altogether, so rather than have it jump in loudly, I faded it in with the cheering after the previous song. The rest is pretty special, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Show 181 - Front 242 - Live At Medusa's, Chicago - 28 September 1984

A first appearance on the site for Front 242, pioneers of Electronic Body Music (or EBM, as it's known these days). This was their debut gig in the USA in 1984; they started their support of Ministry on their "Wax Trax Singles Tour" the very next day in Trenton, New Jersey. The venue, Medusa's, was a "juice bar" (ie no alcohol served) for teens in Chicago which closed down long ago.

Taken from the mixing desk, this recording was donated to the site by a regular listener, who asked if there was any way it could be improved. It required a lot of work - breaks in the sound (some quite long ones), there were tape errors typical of old recordings, lots of noise, hiss...the original tape must have been in the wars a bit! So a good candidate for restoration even before actually trying to make it sound clearer.

So I set to work fixing tape dropouts, correcting the stereo image where possible (their live mixing was pretty extreme moving things left and right, so much of that also needed preserving, while fixing the tape errors), removing as much noise and hiss as possible, then finally cleaning up the muddy sound with EQ and other tools, and remastering.

The result is far clearer and more listenable - to quote the person who donated the original: "I know it was pretty rough in spots (especially that first song), but you did an outstanding job". I am indebted to the same guy for taking the time to write me a short biog of the band which has proved invaluable in writing this page and my intro to the show. Thank you!

A first appearance on Live and Loud! for Alison Moyet, in a restored FM recording taken from her first solo tour of the UK in November 1984.

This one was on a cassette sent in by a listener to Live and Loud! Once I'd transferred it, it was obvious there was quite a lot of damage on several songs; tape dropouts, wow and some bad flutter mainly. After a few days' work, it was far better and I could move onto removing the FM recording hiss and then EQ'ing and mastering.

In common with most FM recordings, this is not the full gig and is just under an hour's worth of her live set from the time, backed by a very proficient live band. It is now sounding excellent for the most part - only a few seconds of damage in a couple of songs are still audible.

Show 148 - Depeche Mode - Live At The Suedwest Stadium Ludwigshafen - 2 June 1984

An overdue return this time for Depeche Mode - this time featuring an FM broadcast of a one off live performance some months before the release of Some Great Reward when they played an open air festival headlined by Elton John. The set is mainly selected tracks from their Construction Time Again tour (go here for a link to a show from that tour) but does feature their current single at the time, People Are People for the very first time live on stage.

I've heard a few versions of this recording and I chose the best sounding complete source to work with - even so it needed several hours work just to fix tape drop outs and FM interference/distortion. After that, several more hours working on EQ to even out the sound as much as possible and then make it sound clearer and sharper.

I hope you enjoy this much improved recording.

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, which started in January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Sourced from lossless files. 2 tracks had a bit of FM interference, a couple more had missing beginnings. These were fixed, then 30 band EQ applied, which was different for each track. Mainly reducing overloading bottom end, reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and bringing a bit of clarity.

Show 107 - Fad Gadget - Rotterdam Arena The Netherlands - 17 March 1984

A long overdue debut on Live and Loud! for one of the true originals in synthpop from the late 70s and early 80s - Fad Gadget.

This is a show from The Netherlands from soon after the release of his 4th album, Gag. I imagine this must have been broadcast on Dutch FM radio at some point. Unfortunately the copy of the broadcast I was able to find had already been "worked on" by someone... When I loaded this show in my editor, the waveform was max'ed out completely - brickwall limiter clumsily applied, I guess. So it sounded hard on the ears and tiring to listen to - everything was LOUD (I know this site is called Live and Loud! but really, this was too much).

So I set to work with the EQ to see if I could fix it - the worst of those excesses are now gone, it sounds far more rounded a recording and easier to listen to. With the added bonus of making the instruments easier to hear, tightening up and reducing the bass a bit, levelling off the top end and...all the usual stuff I do!

Show 92: Sisters of Mercy - Trojan Horse The Hague - 26 May 1984

A first appearance for The Sisters of Mercy, with a gig recorded in The Netherlands in 1984. There are several versions of this recording around but I believe I was sent an excellent copy of the naked soundboard recording which was a joy to work on - it's benefited from some sympathetic EQ which has improved separation between each of the instruments as well as improving the sound of each - guitars shimmer and sparkle, the drums are crisp and punchy, the bass is more distinct and Eldritch rises from the shadows. I'm really pleased with how this one turned out.

I can't pretend to be an expert on The Sisters but I am indebted to Ollie, who is! - and it was he who lobbied for me to remaster this recording. He also asked if he could write a piece about this show for me and this is reproduced below (thanks Ollie!). Incidentally, there's an interesting blog piece written by a Sisters fan about this very gig which you can find here.

Now, this is Ollie's piece:

The Sisters of Mercy have a long, wild history. You may think may 1984 is an early stage of their career, but in fact several line-up changes were behind them already.The then popular singles and EPs like "Alice" or "Temple of Love" (the original version, without Ofra Haza of course ;-) ) had been recorded with guitarist Ben Gunn, who joined the group in early 1982 and left in late 1983. So founder members Andrew Eldritch and Gary Marx, supported by Craig Adams on bass since 1981, replaced Gunn with Wayne Hussey, ex Dead or Alive.

Now in early 1984, quite a lot is new for the Sisters: new line-up, new single ("Body and Soul"), a major deal with WEA records, and even Doktor Avalanche, their drum-machine, got a make-over. Compared to 1983, the sound changed. The songs are played straighter, and Wayne Hussey adds a new guitar style by playing a 12 string...here we have the birth of what would become the sound of the "First And Last And Always" album.

The setlist is the standard one for this tour. They serve a mixture of early singles ("Body Electric", "Alice") B-sides ("Heartland", Adrenochrome"), the new single "Body and Soul" and an early version of "Walk Away", the first written by Wayne Hussey, as well as their famous cover versions "Gimme Shelter" by the Rolling Stones, "Emma" by Hot Chocolate and their dark and driving interpretation of The Velvet Underground's "Sister Ray". The Velvet's song finished their encore in a guitar orgy, the highlight and climax of a Sisters gig in this era and The Sisters at their best, captured here perfectly now in this remastered soundboard recording.

Unfortunately this line-up, regarded by many fans as the definitive one, didn't last long. They did three long tours and released one legendary album, then in June 1985 did their famous last gig at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams formed The Mission, and Andrew Eldritch entered the charts in 1987 with his "Floodland"- album.

The rest is history...

Show 85: Thomas Dolby - Live at Dominion Theatre London - 28 February 1984

This time, it’s a debut on Live and Loud! for Thomas Dolby with a show taken from his The Flat Earth tour of 1984.

I had 3 different versions of this recording, all at different bit rates. 2 of the recordings had some different tracks from each other but were higher quality than the 3rd version which had all the recorded tracks on. So I ended up piecing the best of the 2 together to form 1 complete recording. If you listen carefully you can perhaps play "spot the difference" and see where the joins are! But its all come together well so hopefully most of you won't be able to tell. :-)

Careful EQ of each source separately took some time, as did the editing of the tracks together so they're not glaringly obvious - but it sounds great now, superb stereo and crystal clear. 1 song, Airwaves, does fade out and back in at 1 point, thanks to the original cassette recording running out and needing to be turned over!

Is it all the tracks played? Information and pictures of that 1984 tour seem quite hard to find but maybe not; it's about an hour and 10 minutes long. It's certainly all the tracks that I can find that were recorded though, including on an unused, lower quality soundboard.  Information is so scarce that a source I often use to confirm tour information didn't have this gig listed at all (it does now; I added it).

Show 64 - Big Country - Live at Opry House, Austin Texas - 22 March 1984

This show is Big Country from their tour of the USA in early 1984. They’d released their debut album The Crossing, in July 1983 and their latest single, Wonderland, had just been released a couple of months before this date in January 1984. You’ll hear that and most of The Crossing in this set, originally recorded for NBC radio in the USA. They spent over a month in America and then played a few dates in Japan before heading home and recording what became their first number 1 album, SteelTown, released in October 1984.

Most people would be happy with the original recording as it was - it was in pretty good condition apart from a few vinyl scratches and pops (most of which I hope I caught and removed). But with some EQing and a sprinkling of some studio magic, its improved it in a big way - more space, improved bass and...well  "oomph" really! It sounds really excellent now; I was very pleased with how this one turned out.

Show 57: Ultravox - Hammersmith Odeon, London - 7 June 1984

A bit of a special gig for me as the first time I saw Ultravox was by attending all 5 nights at the Hammersmith Odeon in June 1984. This is by far the best recording from that tour that exists - but sadly its not complete. Taken directly from the soundboard in stereo on the night, the recording stopped after One Small Day - just as they segued into Hymn. Also missing are The Voice, and the encore songs Lament, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes and All Stood Still.

That said, what IS here is superb and remastering has really paid dividends, sorting out the majority of noises, clicks, tape deterioration, with EQ to bring the best out of the sound.

UPDATE 2018
While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording several years ago.

UPDATE 2024

This gig has been released officially, in full, as part of the Lament 40th Anniversary reissue box set - as such, it is no longer available here. The free version was downloaded over 3500 times. Pretty pleased with that, given this was also a bootleg I originally had on cassette back in 1984, bought at Camden Market in London. Nice to see the whole thing finally released (and presumably cleaned up - I haven't been able to buy it yet). Thanks to all who grabbed it and enjoyed it over the last 12 years.

Show 45: Depeche Mode - Hammersmith Odeon, London - 3 November 1984

From early on in their world tour following the release of their 4th album, Some Great Reward, this was originally an FM radio broadcast and so only contains part of the tour set, rather than the whole gig. It responded well to EQ and mastering and sounds excellent.
