Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 12 - Strawberry Switchblade - John Peel Session Broadcast - 5 Oct 1982

A quick request. If you plan on downloading this and putting it on your YouTube channel or your own bootleg page - I don't mind. But a credit to this website where you found it, and a link back to this page would be really appreciated. It helps me gauge which artists are popular - ie more chance of other restorations coming. Stealing it and taking the credit isn't cool. Thanks.

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, starting in January 2017, featuring radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired, restored and then remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original restored session, available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Tracklisting:
1. 10 James Orr Street
2. Little River
3. Secrets
4. Trees And Flowers

The very brief intro and first line on 10 James Orr Street was missing, so I faded that in. Also a small section of Secrets sounds like it was from a different copy of the recording and was spliced in as a repair at some point in the past. I've done what I can to make that blend in better. Otherwise it has cleaned up very nicely and is a nice set of early 80s jangly and moody pop!

The zip file for this session contains remastered FLAC and MP3 versions - the source files were low grade MP3s - I saved these in lossless WAV format to work on and then exported these from that lossless master. You can download it HERE.

If you wish to express gratitude and donate a dollar or the cost of a coffee towards site costs in return, head on over to the Donations tab. Not mandatory of course - just enjoy the tracks.

And if you know anyone who wants a copy of these tracks, give 'em the link to this page - helps me gauge which artists are popular! But if you do redistribute the files please at least keep the tracks together in the original zip with the info file. Thanks.

Enjoy!

And finally... don't forget to SUBSCRIBE TO THE FREE NEWSLETTER so you never miss news on which new gigs and sessions are going to be restored and uploaded here; any news will be delivered to your inbox. I guarantee you no spam - and of course you can unsubscribe at any time.

Tracklisting:
1. (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
2. The Beat
3. Pump It Up
4. You Belong To Me

All tracks were in pretty good shape (for once) which made things a little easier - no major repairs were required before I cleaned up the sound somewhat, mainly bringing back some bottom end, and bringing more clarity and life, adding some space between the instruments before final mastering.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions - and as a bonus for those who prefer them, lossless FLAC versions too. You can download it HERE.

Tracklisting:
1. Two Tribes
2. The World Is My Oyster
3. Krisco Kisses
4. Disneyland

An interesting session, containing a much earlier version of Two Tribes, recorded before Trevor Horn got his hands on it!

Sourced from 320kbps MP3 files; all tracks converted to lossless wav for working on. All tracks were pretty clear but flat. The stereo image sounded badly artificially processed and imbalanced (drums too far on 1 side, for example). Worked to correct that, then mainly bringing back some bottom end, reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and bringing more clarity and life, adding space between the instruments before final mastering.

Radio Prog 9 - The Sisters of Mercy - John Peel Session Broadcast 11 July 1984

***2021 UPDATE***

As of this year, this session had been downloaded 731 times. All for free. An official version has now been released, so my version has been taken down. Go buy the official one. ;-)

This page is left here just for historical reference (and because I don't want to delete it all).

Tracklisting
1. Walk Away
2. Emma
3. The Poison Door
4. No Time To Cry

Sourced from lossless files. 2 tracks had a bit of FM interference, a couple more had missing beginnings. These were fixed, then 30 band EQ applied, which was different for each track. Mainly reducing overloading bottom end, reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and bringing a bit of clarity.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions - and as a bonus for those who prefer them, lossless FLAC versions too.

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, which started in January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 8 - The Human League - John Peel Session Broadcast 16 August 1978

Tracklisting
1. Being Boiled*
2. No Time
3. Blind Youth
4. You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling

"No Time" is an early version of "The Word Before Last".

* Being Boiled was released on the 2011 Various Artists compilation album "Movement: BBC Radio 1 Peel Sessions 1977-1979" and is therefore excluded.

Recorded over a year before the release of their debut album Reproduction, this session features 3 of the 4 tracks recorded (the 4th having been released officially).

Sourced from 2 separate sets of lossless files, this took a lot of work (especially just for 3 tracks) - I fixed several dropouts and clicks and used both sources to get the best quality (copying and pasting parts of songs to remove faults, missing bits, if needed, then blending back together).

Once all that was done, the recording just needed a gentle EQ to improve clarity and boost the low end.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 versions. You can download it HERE.

Radio Prog 7 - A Flock Of Seagulls - John Peel Session Broadcast 12 May 1981

**UPDATE February 2023**

AFOS' excellent eponymously titled debut album has just been remastered and re-released, with a whole shedload of extras, INCLUDING the first official release of this radio session, so as of now, I've removed the link to my version.**

Radio Prog 7 - A Flock Of Seagulls - John Peel Session Broadcast 12 May 1981
Tracklisting

1. Talking (It's Not Me Talking)
2. Messages From The Rings Of Saturn
3. I Ran
4. Committed

Recorded before the release of their first single and almost a year before the release of their first album, this features 4 tracks, 2 of which bear their longer, original titles.

Sourced from MP3 files, I fixed 1 or 2 dropout faults in the recording, some clicks, plus having to use a 2nd source to fix 1 small section which faded out early (see if you can tell where). After that, I applied 30 band EQ to clear up the flat and slightly muddy sound. Mainly a little bottom end, some reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and boosting a little top end when that was lacking. This allows the drums and bass to breathe a bit, the guitar to shimmer in it's own space and the vocals to be clearer.

Radio Prog 6 - Cabaret Voltaire - John Peel Session Broadcast 25 June 1981

***2022 UPDATE

This show is now offline due to a copyright claim. Sorry about that. No idea from who - all I know is what my cloudspace tells me***

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 6 - Cabaret Voltaire - John Peel Session Broadcast 25 June 1981

Tracklisting
1. Black Mask
2. Greensborough
3. Walls Of Jericho
4. Jazz The Glass

Sourced from lossless files, compared to some this was pretty straight forward - some tape hiss was removed, a few clicks, then 30 band EQ, which varied for each track as rach track is quite different - some had more than others. Mainly a little bottom end, some reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and rolling off the top end when that was a bit hard on the ears.

The zip file for this session contains remastered MP3 and FLAC versions as a free bonus for those of you who like lossless!***LINK REMOVED***

Radio Prog 5 - Yazoo - John Peel Session Recorded 16 February 1982

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, starting January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 5:  Yazoo: John Peel Session Recorded 16 February 1982

Tracklisting
1. In My Room
2. Winter Kills
3. Don't Go
4. Midnight

The only files I could find online were fairly low bitrate MP3s of a sometimes quite noisy and harsh recording so these were saved as WAVs for working on.

Hiss reduction applied to reduce - but not eliminate - quite a lot of the noise. Each track then had 30 band EQ to remove top end harshness and enhance the lower end - kick drums and bass synths. The middle was then eased down a bit make it clearer and create more "space" in the tracks between the instruments. Sounds far better now. Enjoy!

EDIT September 2018: This session is now being released officially in October 2018 as part of a boxed set, so this page now is for information only. You can check out the boxed set here

Original files hiss reduction applied to reduce - but not eliminate completely - tape noise. Each track then had 30 band EQ to remove mid range muddiness and top end harshness. Bass was made a little clearer and more audible, while upper frequencies were toned down, creating more "space" in the tracks between the instruments. Finally, each track was faded out to soften the sharp cut off to each track on the original recording.

Radio Prog 2: Kraftwerk: HR1 Frankfurt Radio Concert 25 January 1974

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, starting January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file.

Live and Loud! Radio Prog 2: Kraftwerk: HR1 Frankfurt Radio Concert, 25 January 1974

Tracklisting
Introduction
Klingklang
Ruckzuck
Radio Announcer
Atem

Tongebirge
Tanzmusik
Radio Announcer
Kohoutek/Kometenmelodie I & II

This is a concert specifically created for radio - Kraftwerk were top of a bill featuring 3 acts - more information is available in the download.

The zip file contains the show and a text file with more information about the original concert and a translation of the German radio announcer. You can get it by clicking here.

The original recording has a basic mix with each instrument in a particular place in the stereo image - electronic percussion was bizarrely over on the extreme left, so I've reshaped the stereo image and moved the percussion slightly just to take away the unpleasant effect of having the percussion overload the left hand side too much. I then used 30 band EQ to enhance bass and upper frequencies, creating more "space" in the tracks between the instruments and bringing out detail which you can't hear on the original (to those interested, a screenshot of the EQ is in the zip too).

If you know anyone who wants a copy of these tracks, I'd rather you redirect anyone to this page for a copy but if you do redistribute please use the original zip with the tracks and info file! Thank you. :)

2 In A Glass Eye
3 Baba O'Riley
4 Wolf
5 DJ Outro

The session is available as a zip file, containing each track.

***2026 Update

For some reason, the link was redirecting to something else entirely - no idea how that has happened. Anyway, all fixed now. You can download this fantastic session in a zip file by clicking here.

Original files had noise reduction applied via Izotope RX5 and then 30 band EQ to remove mid range muddiness and enhance bass and upper frequencies, creating more "space" in the tracks between the instruments. I didn't take away every last bit of hiss - frankly that can also remove a lot of the recording and end up sounding awful. Ultimately this is about preserving the music. But believe me, there was a lot more hiss on the original source files.

Some clicks and tape dropouts have also been repaired - you won't hear where. :)  The ones you can hear, I couldn't fix without access to a better copy (which may not exist, who knows?).

If you know anyone who wants a copy of these tracks, I'd rather you redirect anyone to this page for a copy but if you do redistribute please use the original zip with the tracks and info file! Thank you. :)
