The Show
A listener got in touch last year, after Rick Davies from Supertramp sadly passed away, and requested I do a show from the band, if I could find one. Well, it took me a while to find one but here it is. In the notes with it, it is listed as the last show Roger Hodgson performed with the band - and indeed, he even announces it during the gig. 

However, I'm not convinced - everything online points to him leaving at the end of the tour, a couple of months away. Maybe they persuaded him to stay on and finish the tour. Or he had temporary second thoughts.

What Was Done
I think this was an FM broadcast - there was some FM interference at times which I removed as much as possible. Someone had put this onto 2 CDs at some stage so there were fadeouts and fadeins to deal with. A couple of tape dropouts were fixed too. 

Then it was on to improve the clarity, tighten up the low end and make it more audible, and separate out the instruments. Once that was done, I mastered and it now sounds much clearer and more powerful than before.  

What you end up with is a superb stereo live performance by a band who really could play and sing. This is a great live set. Rest in peace, Rick Davies.

The Show
John Foxx only toured once in the 1980s - towards the end of 1983 in support of his 3rd album, The Golden Section. I am indebted to a listener of Live And Loud! Shows who recently got in touch and donated a lot of recordings of different bands, including this one.  This is an audience recording made at the gig. Some damage - clicks, dropouts, a short part missing altogether, some fadeouts. And unfortunately it is missing the final encore, Your Dress, but the rest of the show is present.

What Was Done
Despite the damage, the taper was in a good position on the night to get a fairly clear recording so it was well worth working on. I repaired the missing part in the first song (see if you can spot where!) and then repaired the rest. Then it was on to improve the clarity, tightening up the bass and drums a bit, and separating out the instruments. Once that was done, I mastered to widen the sound somewhat, make the vocals a bit more prominent in the mix and make it all sound more powerful overall. As with most live gigs - especially those recorded in the crowd over 40 years ago - you will hear the odd bit of feedback. The beauty of audience recordings though is you can sometimes shut your eyes and imagine you're standing there. This is not a sanitised live recording - this is what you heard on the night.

Anyway, it may have been a lot of work but live recordings of John Foxx are not common, so this was well worth spending extra time on. I hope you can enjoy it.

The Show
An audience recording from the time. I think someone had put a limiter on this at some point to make everything LOUDER as the left channel was pretty loud. The right channel not so much - that was much quieter. Otherwise, generally in decent condition.

What Was Done
It's not a stereo recording so it was easy to raise up the volume of the right channel to balance the sound before I worked on it. There was a hum in the background - I removed that without affecting the rest of the recording much. There were some dropouts on the left or right channels (never both at the same time); I fixed those. Some clicks and pops were present in the crowd noise especially - fixed those. Once all that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix - bringing up the drums and bass in particular, and toning down the trebly guitar a bit, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and wider. The result is very clear, for an audience recording and really powerful; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

The Show
Billed as a soundboard recording and released as a bootleg CD at some point - and I assume on vinyl too, as there was vinyl noise on the recording I had. Bizarrely the CD track listing was in the wrong order, after the first 5 tracks.

What Was Done
As always when I pick a show thinking "this won't take long..." it takes far longer! I researched the gig and found the actual setlist online in a couple of different places, which showed the song order on what I had was very wrong! So I took it all apart and put the songs back in the right order, blending in the audience noise between songs, which actually sounds less disjointed now than it did on the source material. There were some clicks and pops from vinyl to get rid of, and some vinyl crackle which I've been able to reduce a lot. 

Once that was done, the recording was fairly flat (as boots so often are) but I knoew it would polish up well, so I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity and power to the sound mix, and then mastered. The result is really really clear and powerful - showcasing how good a live band they are and certainly were in 1983; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

As promised above, highlights of the gig were broadcast on TV back in 1983 so here's a link to that. Not all songs are included but you do get a few cut ins with the band members being interviewed. Worth a watch but as a rip from VHS don't expect quite the same sound quality. Still well worth a watch!

The Show
An FM broadcast from Radio Clyde. This one was from a cassette I bought in the 80s - probably on Camden Market in London - I used to get loads from there at that time. I transferred it to digital, then cleaned it up and got to work. As often with radio broadcasts from the time, it was a rather dry and thin mix but at least the tape was in decent condition still.

What Was Done
A few tape dropouts and glitches were fixed, tape noise reduced and the gig was in 2 halves either side of a radio announcer and adverts, so I edited as much of that out as possible and merged in the rest. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ etc and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity and live muscle to the sound mix, and then mastered. The result is really clear; I'm sure you'll enjoy it. There's another Warriors tour FM recording on the site featuring quite a few different tracks, so don't miss that one.

The Show
According to the notes with the source files, this was a soundboard recording but does sound more like a radio broadcast to me. This came to me as MP3s of a show that someone had worked on (it was all VERY LOUD, which tends to be a giveaway). This at least is in stereo - this show was also broadcast on TV in Germany - a video of that s on YouTube with a mono soundtrack and is well worth a watch (a link to that at the bottom of this page).

What Was Done
As always, to start with everything got saved in 1 large lossless .wav file for me to start work on. I think the recording I had access to had originally been a vinyl bootleg - there was a fair bit of surface noise and crackle which I tried to remove first. Most of it is gone now - there's still a little on the first track. I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring more clarity and punch to the sound mix. I also had to deal with a fair amount of sibilance and tamed most of that, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall, and a bit wider. The result is a really really good record of the band at that time; I'm sure you'll enjoy it. There is a very brief skip in Watch Me Bleed which you might notice - there wasn't much I could do about that.

The Show
A Rockpalast TV broadcast from German television. Like almost all TV broadcasts back then, this was in mono. The original show can be watched here on YouTube.

What Was Done
The recording was generally in good shape for a VHS recording nearly 40 years old but was fairly murky and muddy, lacking in low and high frequencies. Volume was also a bit up and down in places and more on the right than the left (a mono soundtrack but recorded on a stereo VHS so there were 2 channels of mono). Once the volume was leveled out and the 2 channels balannced, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, so bass, drums, vocals, especially were more audible and everything was clearer. And made one or 2 other little fixes at the beginning and end, so the show flows better. Finally, I mastered to make it clearer still and more powerful overall, and much "wider". The result is very very listenable now.

The Show
Both nights in Montreal were recorded for FM broadcast - the second night (13 July) was the one broadcast and has been widely bootlegged. THIS one is the unused first night and was sourced from 2 CD bootlegs. The show includes the brilliantly enthusiastic MC introducing Bowie, the whole set and all the encores - the show lasts just over 2 hours altogether and features 27 songs.

What Was Done
The main problem with the first night (this one) was on the first 2 songs - several instances of someone (a recording engineer/sound guy presumably - if you know, please leave a comment) deciding to talk into a mic and this being picked up REALLY LOUDLY on the recording so it obscures the band and Bowie, somewhat, for a few seconds each time. Using some of my studio toys for a few hours, I was able to reduce the volume on this guy's voice without affecting the band and Bowie. It's not gone altogether (that WAS starting to affect the music) but it's much less distracting.

There were some dips in volume to take care of and then I needed to edit the 2 CD sides together in 1 file without you noticing. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring more clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered it all to make it clearer and more powerful overall. You can really hear the instruments being played now more clearly than on the source. This is a really strong performance and a really great sounding recording now.

The Show
Originally an FM radio broadcast. Copies online are usually marked as 2 December 1983 - but all sources I can find point to the band playing ending the UK tour by playing on the 2 and 3 December at the Hammersmith Odeon, and as you will hear, Annie Lennox does say "this is the last night of the Touch tour" which would suggest the recording is from the 3 December, so that's what I've gone with.

Fortunately only a couple of dropouts and a bad edit needed fixing before I got to work - the applause after Who's That Girl? is chopped off suddenly (someone turning the tape over, I suspect!) and the beginning of "I Could Give You (A Mirror)" is similarly truncated, so I blended those together so the recording flows better. Once that was done, I got to work with EQ and the usual studio toys to bring some clarity to the sound mix, and then mastered to make it clearer and more powerful overall. The result is really really nice; I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I'm very happy to finally to be able to bring a 2nd restoration of an early SoM gig to you (if you missed the first one, you can download that from HERE).

To me, this sounds like a mono soundboard recording although there are apparently several versions of this gig on the internet, including audience recordings. All versions apparently omit the last track, Emma.

Anyway, for this one I fixed some tape dropouts and some quite alarming variations in volume, in places (the first track in particular was far louder than the rest of the set - sound man sorting out levels, maybe). Adrenochrome has part of it missing, so I faded out and back in so it wasn't quite so jarring. I also reduced background noise and made a few other little tweaks here and there before finally getting to work on the sound itself - bringing back some bottom end and creating a bit more space between the instruments where possible. After that, some studio toys were used and the final recording now has more presence and clarity than the original I was given.

Soft Cell gig recordings from the early 80s are rarer than hens' teeth, it would seem, so I'm really pleased to finally be able to bring you a restoration of one, thanks to the original copy on cassette being sent to me by a listener. 

This was a fairly clear but quiet and flat audience recording and I'm not convinced this was the complete gig - this is the only setlist I can find but the recording cuts off after Memorabilia with no "goodnight!" or anything, so I assume they played another track or 2 at least.

There were a few things that needed sorting out as best I can - there's a cut in "Insecure...Me?" which I've faded out and in, and  Loving You, Hating Me cuts off rather abruptly and Bedsitter has the beginning chopped off - I guess this is where the tape was turned over back in 1983 - so I've tidied those up too. Also a weird couple of glitches which you won't hear now. And the usual tape dropouts on either the left or right channel that needed fixing. Once all those were done, I got to work on the sound quality with my EQ and other sound tools - far more clarity and "oomph" now, with everything more audible and clear. 

For an audience recording I think this one sounds really good and I am sure all fans of Soft Cell will enjoy this one!

Show 138 - The Fixx - Live At Rainbow Music Hall Denver - 8 September 1983

This recording is from an FM broadcast and was in pretty good condition for its age. Some odd clicks and noises were removed and then I addressed the low end muddiness with 30 band EQ and generally brought out the sound a bit so it was clearer.

The songs here are taken from their first 2 albums; Shuttered Room from 1982 and Reach The Beach, released in May 1983. There is some confusion online as to the correct running order for this show. I have presented it here as it appears on the FM recording. There is an MTV video on YouTube which has moved Stand of Fall and made Red Skies the encore...however, it's pretty noticeable they've done it with some pretty poor continuity editing! Setlist.fm has an entry for this show too - but whoever filled that in has gone from the MTV video.

I've listened to this several times and, either the radio station guys did an amazing re-edit, OR...this is the correct set list. Either way, the video on YouTube has some odd edits towards the end where the sound quality changes where Cy Curnin is apparently "speaking" in between songs - which to me, just sounds and looks like bad editing on MTV's part. So I've taken the FM broadcast to be the right order and left it well alone.

Show 129: Nash The Slash - Live At City Garden, Trenton, New Jersey - 21 Feb 1983

An outing for Nash The Slash from early 1983 with a set including a few songs from his album American BandAges which would be released the following year. For those who only really know him for the Children Of The Night album in the UK, the versions of Swing Shift and Deadman's Curve here are different - studio versions of these appeared on the compilation The Million Year Picnic - so it's a very interesting listen.

This was a soundboard recording I think, although 1 track, Womble, is badly affected by what sounds like FM interference - which was mostly in good condition but some tracks were very noisy and/or hissy and recording quality took a nose dive during 1 or 2 songs. So while most of the tracks have only needed a fair bit of the old 30 band EQ to improve things, I've spent a lot of time trying to rescue some of the others. Womble is, I'm afraid, still rather noisy but worth a listen. Hopefully the rest of the gig makes up for it!

Show 117 - Ultravox - Live in Lyon - 22 Jan 1983

This time it’s a rare performance from Ultravox from 1983. They released their 3rd album with Midge Ure on vocals in October 1982 called Quartet, and then supported that with a world tour lasting from November until the following Spring. Brief highlights from the London dates of this tour appeared on a short live video and EP, Monument, which has since been reissued on DVD and CD - but otherwise recordings of this tour are quite scarce.

This was labeled as a radio broadcast - if it was, it sounds like they pretty much took a recording from the soundboard and broadcast that as the original was pretty unprocessed - but it would explain the missing intro to the start and the sharp fadeout at the end. Apart from the missing intro to Astradyne the recording was in pretty good condition but a bit tinny and hard on the ears. I've corrected a couple of bits where the recording was muffled and also applied a 30 band EQ to improve the bottom end (you can hear the drums and bass far more clearly now) and take off the harshness from the guitar, vocals and synths. Really pleased with how this one has turned out! A must for every Ultravox fan, without question.

Show 111 - Men Without Hats - Live At Club Casino, Hampton Beach NH - 7 Aug 1983

A debut on Live and Loud! for Canadian band, Men Without Hats.

This was a short FM broadcast recorded for the BBC Rock Hour in the USA and only features 6 songs. It was quite a muffled, low fi recording but some judicious use of my 30 band EQ has cleaned it up a lot and its very listenable, even if some of the singing and playing on the night was a bit...wayward! The set contains songs from their first album Rhythm of Youth and also a couple which would later turn up on their second - Folk of the 80s (Part III) - released in 1984.

Some time back I was asked if I could find an early Howard Jones recording - it took a while but I finally found some and this was the earliest. Someone had already worked on this and to be honest it sounded pretty bad - far too loud, noise pushed up too and the sound balance was lopsided! So I spent some time fixing the sound balance, removing some noise and then EQing to remove the worst of the OTT bass that had been added and tidy up the rest.

Interesting to hear Howard introduce What Is Love? as just "Love" first of all, before correcting himself - that was its original title (you can hear a very early version of the song if you read on to the bottom of the page!).

Anyway, the gig does sound nice and clear now, just a shame its a little short!

While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording several years ago. You can now download this new version (as of 2019) HERE as 1 new 320kbps MP3 file.

The file says 1977 - can't tell you whether that's accurate or not - and a couple of people below refuse to believe its even HJ at all - but I thought it would be a nice little extra to throw in as this gig is quite short and you can make your own minds up. Please note, I've not done anything with the sound on these, they are "as is" so a bit noisy and old sounding!

This show has now been re-restored from scratch, and improved massively, I think. Noise reduction done, removed clicks and pops, then got to work with EQ and other studio toys to improve the sound - I haven't done a pseudo stereo effect this time, just widened the sound image somewhat after doing everything else before final mastering. 

There is still some of that digital distortion on I Don´t Owe You Anything but the new version is clearer and more of an accurate record of them live in concert at the time, I think.

The first time I've done a gig by The Smiths. This is from around the time they signed their record deal with Rough Trade, shortly after the release of their first single, Hand In Glove. This was a mono soundboard recording of their 2nd appearance at The Hacienda, with a lot of boomy mid range which was ok played quietly but got wearing on the ears after a while if the volume was up. So a good candidate for a cleanup!

I've done a "pseudo stereo" effect with it, then rebalanced the sound to keep it sounding more natural. Then, I removed hiss and some digital crackles and pops before EQ'ing it to remove that mid range boom, tighten up the bass end a bit and improve the clarity.

Unfortunately most of I Don´t Owe You Anything is marred (no pun intended) by some low level digital distortion - I guess that was generated when it was transferred from tape or vinyl to digital format. Its not unlistenable but just to make you aware its there - I was able to remove a bit but not most of it.

Despite that the finished result is a nice, clear recording which sounds great overall now.

Show 93 - Blancmange - The Paradiso Amsterdam - 9 April 1983

I originally intended to remaster a recording from the Manchester Hacienda from 1982 - not realising it was on general DVD release (I assume officially). Which is a shame as I had it sounding really good! Instead I found this one - an interesting (but sadly short) FM broadcast from Dutch radio of a live set by Blancmange from 1983. There are some faults with this - essentially some FM static on the first song in various places (I've removed or lessened what I could) and the last track broadcast, Blind Vision, has had to be faded out rather abruptly by the original taper to remove the radio lead in to the news. But its a little gem, nonetheless, featuring tracks from Happy Families and also Mange Tout which was released a year later.

Apart from working on the static noise and a few clicks, I used EQ to tighten up a rather bass heavy recording and give some space to the instruments and vocals.

Show 81: Tears For Fears - Live at Hammersmith Palais London - 18 April 1983

A debut on Live and Loud! For Tears For Fears. I’ve been looking on and off for a few years for a good early recording with more than a few tracks on it and finally found this recording - a BBC recording made for broadcast in America. And then I found 2 versions - 1 totally drenched in tape hiss but lots of sound to play with, and the other a lower bit rate mp3 which had very little tape hiss but also very little top end so it sounded very dull and thin.

So I went to work on the noisy one - and while I COULD have removed every last bit of hiss, doing that in my opinion ruins the recording as it also removes a lot of the signal - crowd noise especially sounds weird, like its underwater! So I removed most of the noise but not all, so the recording still breathed a bit. So while this gig IS a little more noisy than most on the archive, it still sounds really good. I then spent a quite a while with EQ, separating out the stereo image and the space between the instruments to make them all stand out a bit better; that done I did some final mastering to add a bit of punch.

This is another recording where the sound man took a song or 2 to get the levels right but despite that I hope you agree that this gig is the best stereo representation of early Tears For Fears playing live.

The Show

This was originally a radio broadcast (hence the edited setlist, sadly!). I had a copy of this on tape from 1983 for a long time which was great quality - but lost that some years back and the only copies I could find were poor recordings and low bit rate mp3s. One copy was even in mono!! So it was good to find a decent copy again (and my thanks to Stephen for letting me have these!).

What Was Done
It was rather flat but otherwise in good condition, so not much repair work needed. Instead I spent a lot of time EQ'ing it. It was worth it - if you like your tom toms aggressive and your synths to make your spine quiver, then you've come to the right place with this one! Loudspeakers please, or at least decent headphones - you'll really notice the difference, even if you have this recording already from elsewhere! :-) Enjoy.
