Welcome - About Live and Loud!

Live and Loud! began as a fortnightly internet radio show in 2012 taking old unreleased live concert recordings I could find and working to repair and improve them - fixing tape hiss, noise, tape drop out, clicks, speed variations, defects - before improving the sound quality by EQing the sound to bring out the instruments as clearly as possible. These are now made directly available to download for free to reach as many fans of the music as possible.

Depending on the quality of the original recording, these can often be made to sound almost like commercial recordings - but of course I can't guarantee that for every show. What I can guarantee is it will sound far better than the original files available which have been floating around the internet and on bootleg recordings for many years.

Almost all are either "soundboard" recordings (taken directly from the mixing desk used at the gig on the night) or old FM radio recordings. A few gigs, if they are of special historical importance, make an appearance even if they were recorded from the audience - these can also be made to sound better than ever.

Do your ears a favour and listen on headphones or good speakers to get most benefit - laptop speakers will always sound pretty poor by comparison.

All shows still available are listed, including a link to download the remastered show for free. If you want to support the site with a small donation, you can receive the shows as either separate MP3s or FLACs (your choice) - head over to the Rewards for Donations page and see how you can get a lot for very little!

If you want to email me, an email link is in my profile in a link in the side panel.

And finally... These are great fun to listen to but DO NOT replace original releases - support these artists and buy their music.
There is nothing you can go and buy in a regular record store here. If a gig is made available as a regular release, then it will be removed (as a couple have been already).

Show 89: Jean Michel Jarre - La Defense Paris - 14 July 1990

In 1990, Jean Michel Jarre released his 10th studio album, Waiting For Cousteau, dedicated to marine conservationist Jacques Cousteau, on Cousteau’s 80th birthday on 11 June. A month later he promoted the album with a huge live event in Paris, on Bastille Day. Backed by many of his usual collaborators on synthesisers and drums, he was joined by a steel band, a choir and enormous marionettes alongside the usual extravagant light show. The show was watched by an estimated 2.5 million people live in the city, setting a new record.

The original copy of the FM broadcast I had given to me (thank you, you know who you are!) was quite thin and compressed but with some patient EQ and fixing a couple of defects, now sounds far better, if not entirely compression free.

In the 1990s a VHS video was issued of this show but that had tracks missing; this recording does have all tracks present. Incidentally, in common with other French broadcast recordings I have, they do like to talk in between tracks! So you will hear the odd spoken link in between tracks, as well as at the end of the recording before M. Jarre says his final farewell.

The show is now available to download exclusively for free here as 1 MP3 file.

Or, if you would like to have separate tagged MP3s, or even lossless files in FLAC format, head on over to the Donations tab to see how you can obtain these for a very small donation towards the site costs.

  1. Thanks, this is fantastic - I've not heard it since university days (ie many, many moons ago!). Nicely tidied up sound too.

  2. Hey Flip, do you have any more Police concerts to share? Looking for some, but there ghastly hard to search for on the internet

    1. I have found a 1979 show - no idea yet whether its listenable yet! If you're on Facebook, give me a shot on the Flip Martian facebook group or the page of the same name to remind me to check - got a large stockpile to go through currently!

  3. It sounds really bad... overcompressed, all dynamics are gone. And it's 128 kbp/s at best, not 320.
And you dare to ask money for a (probably fake) flac version ?

    1. Read the notes above, brave anonymous poster - the source I had (which was indeed FLAC) was "thin and compressed". I worked to improve what I had - in a WAV file created from the FLACs - so all losslessly. I've even said after the work I put in it's still not "compression free". Perhaps you missed that part?

The 320kbps file (not sure where you get 128kbps from - check the file properties) on the site was saved from the final WAV file. The separated FLACs that 1 or 2 donators have received are saved from that WAV file too.

If you have a better set of source files be sure to get in touch and I would happily do this show again and send you a free copy of the remaster for your trouble.

Or disappear back into the internet and post inaccurate nonsense elsewhere - your choice. Have a great day. :-)

    2. I remember there was only 128 kbps mp3 circulating around, and then some guy decided to convert them all into FLACs and SCH just to be able to share them on a DC hub. I have serious doubts the original was ever lossless. I actually used to own the broadcast cassette in my old home , but my folks don't want to bother shipping it... Maybe someday. (I'm AERO62 from zoolook)

    3. Well I never ever pretend anything is anything other than what it is - I wouldn't have a clue if the original was a 128kbps file from years ago that someone once turned into flacs. I only ever state what I have to work on and what the original sounded like. Ultimately what matters is whether it sounds better than the source that I had - and in every case they do. As always, the results are freely downloadable from this site. Anonymous posters falsely accusing me of being some kind of crook after I spend days on these things get short shrift...

  4. OMG!! Just found your site and this recording. Fabulous memories of being there in 1990, just what's needed at the moment. Thanks very much.

    1. Fantastic. Glad you enjoyed it. Be sure to check out the other JMJ shows too. Hopefully I'll have a Docklands one up in the next 3 months too. Cheers!
