End of Another Live and Loud! Season

We're now done for a month or two. :-) I have to say thank you to those of you who have taken an interest in the shows and enjoy them as much as I do - especially those who take the time to get in touch and send me their thoughts or thanks. I don't suppose many of you enjoy every show (I do, oddly!) but its been great to get feedback from people who appreciate the work that goes into these.

The show is now taking a short break but Live and Loud! WILL return in 2015. There are still shows outstanding I've not had chance to do, as well as new ones of course that surface from time to time. I have to say that most recent gig recordings I've heard are decent quality already - so probably won't feature on here. The whole point of Live and Loud! was to resurrect and make listenable older recordings that might otherwise disappear.

As I say - loads still to do. So keep an eye on this site - I'll be updating it with the latest news as and when I know its returning, and which shows are being done.

Still on the lookout for good soundboard and FM radio recordings - so if you have any that might be of interest - please do GET IN TOUCH! Some of the shows I've done so far have been listeners who have sent in recordings from their own collections.

Show 57: Ultravox - Hammersmith Odeon, London - 7 June 1984

A bit of a special gig for me as the first time I saw Ultravox was by attending all 5 nights at the Hammersmith Odeon in June 1984. This is by far the best recording from that tour that exists - but sadly its not complete. Taken directly from the soundboard in stereo on the night, the recording stopped after One Small Day - just as they segued into Hymn. Also missing are The Voice, and the encore songs Lament, Dancing With Tears In My Eyes and All Stood Still.

That said, what IS here is superb and remastering has really paid dividends, sorting out the majority of noises, clicks, tape deterioration, with EQ to bring the best out of the sound.

This gig has been released officially, in full, as part of the Lament 40th Anniversary reissue box set - as such, it is no longer available here. The free version was downloaded over 3500 times. Pretty pleased with that, given this was also a bootleg I originally had on cassette back in 1984, bought at Camden Market in London. Nice to see the whole thing finally released (and presumably cleaned up - I haven't been able to buy it yet). Thanks to all who grabbed it and enjoyed it over the last 12 years.

Show 56: The Beach Boys - Memorial Auditorium, Sacramento, California - 1 August 1964

This was quite a show - The Beach Boys on their first national tour of the USA. 2 shows on 1 August were performed and recorded, the best bits were combined and overdubbed later to form the "Concert" album. This remaster is of the afternoon performance and is a great historical record of The Beach Boys live, in front of an audience of screaming teens! Perfect overdubbing is replaced by the odd missed cue and bum note here and there but it doesn't detract - you hear the raw excitement of the gig. Which is really what live performance is all about, isn't it?! :-)

As a bonus, part of the rehearsal for the shows was recorded as well and this is presented at the start of the show.

Show 55: Depeche Mode - Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo, Japan - 8 April 1985

Depeche Mode are one of the few bands of the early 1980s still to be together and releasing material today.

This show features the classic line up of Dave, Martin and Andy with Alan Wilder, with Depeche Mode on their world tour in support of their 4th album Some Great Reward. The tour started in September 1984 in the UK around the time of the album's release date, and ended some 10 months (and 83 shows) later in Poland after taking in the UK, Scandinavia, Europe, Japan and North America.

In April 1985, Depeche Mode were in Japan and that’s where we catch up with them tonight, on the second of 4 dates. Depeche Mode, live from the Nakano Sun Plaza Hall, Tokyo, from 8 April 1985...live and loud!

Show 54: The Police - Roxy Theatre, San Diego, USA - 16 May 1979

The Police were one of the biggest bands of the early 1980s - but this show captures them in concert just before they hit the bigtime.

They had released their first album, Outlandos d’Amour in November 1978 and initially it didn’t do too well - the first two singles from the album, Roxanne and Can’t Stand Losing You, having flopped some months earlier. In early 1979 however, Roxanne was released in the USA and met with some success - The Police duly set off on a low budget tour of the USA, driving themselves around in a van - and that success led to Roxanne being re-issued and making the UK top 20. After this tour they finished recording their 2nd album, Regatta de Blanc. The 1st single from that, Message In A Bottle (played on this tour for the first time), got to #1 in the UK and...well, the rest is history.

Upcoming Shows News

Tonight (4th November) sees a show by The Police in San Diego from 1979 - very nice remastered FM recording.

Coming up in 2 weeks time (18 November) is Depeche Mode from 1985 in Japan - full remastered Soundboard recording from Tokyo.

The show after that (2nd December) will be a real history piece - The Beach Boys, live in 1964 - again that's a full remastered soundboard recording. That show will be uniquely preceded by a recording of them in rehearsals for that very show, which should be interesting in itself.

Shows coming up after that will be announced on here shortly but will include XTC, from Philadelphia in 1981, Ultravox from their 1979 tour of the USA with Midge Ure newly installed as front man, Elvis Presley from 1970 in Las Vegas, The Rolling Stones from 1973, and...well, loads more still to come. Every fortnight, Tuesday evenings at 8pm (UK time) on Radio Happy. Stay tuned!

Show 53: ABC - Live at The Musikhalle, Hamburg - 2 February 1983

ABC's debut album, The Lexicon of Love, reached number 1 in the UK in 1982 and featured 3 hit singles, all in tonight’s set. They released their second album, Beauty Stab in November 1983 but tonight we’re in February 1983, where we find ABC playing live in Germany. While the original recording I found wasn’t in the best condition - the source was a lower bit rate MP3 than I would normally use, with a couple of tracks fading out early - I’ve done what I can to spruce it up and I hope you’ll agree that its worth an airing.

Show 52: Kate Bush - Manchester Apollo - April 1979

 

A great show to kick off the latest series of Live and Loud! Until 2014, Kate Bush hadn't toured since her Tour of Life in 1979. So why not find a show from that tour, polish it up and bring it to you? This show takes you back to 1 of the Manchester Apollo dates on that tour in April 1979.  The tour was a lavish affair, featuring multiple costume changes, poetry, magicians and back projections - none of which we can bring you of course! But what we CAN bring you is a polished up and (apart from a few brief parts where the tape was degraded) great sounding soundboard recording. This is the full show, running to nearly 2 hours a great set of songs which has cleaned up nicely - I hope you enjoy it.

Show 51: Devo - The Walker Centre, Minneapolis - 3 November 1978

Devo, at a point in their history before they jumped fully into the synthpop pool and wrote hits like "Whip It". Back in 1978 they were still primarily an edgy, quirky guitar band with synths. Its a great soundboard recording which has polished up really well and sounds first rate.

Show 50: Marilyn Manson - Docklands Arena, London - 24 January 2001

Marilyn Manson, from the 11 month long Guns, God and Government world tour, captured at the Docklands Arena in London on the first UK leg of the tour.

It's an FM radio broadcast originally so sadly isn't the full set - but what's here is pretty damn good! It responded well to some remastering; I hope you enjoy it!

Someone recently donated to the site and asked for this as separated files. Given it is over 12 years since the show was first worked on by me, I decided to go back and do it again, from the original source files I had. The result is much improved I think - more rounded bass, a fuller sound and less harsh top end.
