Show 23: Devo - The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, USA - 11 November 1982

A gig from their groundbreaking tour after the release of their "Oh No Its Devo" album in 1982, which featured them performing against live video synchronised alongside the songs. Not something that was generally undertaken back then when equipment was far more primitive then than now. There are a couple of songs faded out where they had been cut off in the original recording - but this is still the best record of this tour (that I've found, anyway)

This is a soundboard recording and has responded really well to remastering - as a Devo fan myself I might be a bit biased but I think it sounds really really good.

While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality further, over what I’d originally done to the recording several years ago. Show 22: Simple Minds - Werchter Festival, Belgium - 3 July 1983

I must admit that while I'm quite a fan of Simple Minds from their early days, by 1983 they'd gone a bit overblown for my tastes - but then, that's just as they got really popular I suppose, so what do I know?! :-)

This is a soundboard recording which is slightly bass heavy even after remastering but still acts as a great record of Simple Minds appearing at this annual festival in Werchter, Belgium.

Show 21: Depeche Mode - 1981 and 1980

2 for the price of 1 this time - I found these gigs and couldn't resist trying to restore them. Depeche Mode just before they hit the big time. The 1981 gig is a real gem - a gig 2 weeks after New Life, their first single to breach the charts, was released. I think this was a soundboard recording, its polished up really well - an exciting, raw performance with nothing but a reel to reel tape recorder and analogue synths.

And if you ever wondered how Just Can't Get Enough would sound starting with a bossa nova rhythm...well, you came to the right place...

The Croc's gig is quite short so back in 2013 I broadcast it along with an even earlier gig I found - one of their earliest gigs that exists on tape - from the Bridgehouse in London from October 1980. This was several months before the release of their first single, "Dreaming of Me".  The version I had then was an audience recording and had been "restored" by someone already to remove tape hiss - not too well. So while I was able to make it pretty listenable, it still wasn't great, hence it being a bonus here and not the main show. Even so, its fascinating and still entertaining to hear DM play several unreleased tracks and early versions of other songs which would become well known later.

2019 UPDATE
While preparing this old show as separate files for a donator to the site, I found I could now improve the sound quality of the Croc's gig further, over what I’d originally done to the recording back in 2013. I also found a different recording of the Bridgehouse recording! Which revealed the copy I had in 2013 was missing a song, and was in the wrong order! So I set to work on this other recording, starting from scratch. It had been "mastered" by someone in the past but had distorted bass through much of it and sounded quite murky. I've been able to remove most of that bass distortion and also widen the sound a bit, so it seems quite a bit clearer! It's a vast improvement on the earlier version I had from 6 years ago.

Raw performance (and recording!) of Blondie from just before they really hit the big time. An FM radio recording, the quality was pretty muddy but some EQ has brought it out a bit and cleared things a little and its a great, raw record of a band about to go global.

Show 18: ABBA - Live In 1979

A bootleg (originally called Sweet Dreams Are Made of This) containing performances from a gig at Wembley in London in late 1979 apparently, plus material from a TV special. My initial research suggested it was 1981 - but that was definitely wrong; they're 1979. I couldn't find out much more, however!

What I CAN tell you is that some EQ and remastering brought out the quality nicely and this has proved to be one of the most popular broadcasts I did.

Show 17: The Comsat Angels - Rotterdam Arena, Netherlands - 22 October 1983

A band from Sheffield who had much critical acclaim but sadly little commercial success. They'd just recorded their fourth album "Land" when this gig took place. This was an FM recording (broadcast, I assume,  in the Netherlands, seeing as that's where the gig is from!) and has polished up nicely.

Show 16: Ultravox - Marquee, London, UK - 26 December 1978

The last John Foxx-led incarnation of Ultravox, playing at the old Marquee club in London, on Boxing Day (no rest for the wicked!). They'd already released their 3rd (and arguably most influential) album, Systems of Romance and would split up just a few short months later. The set also features two tracks which Ultravox never released - but which would be released later by John Foxx on his first two solo albums.

This was a fairly battered soundboard recording released on vinyl, which had since been through a few generations I think - even so, the studio trickery has made it more than listenable - its a great record of a great band at their creative peak. I remember when I broadcast this, someone got in touch to tell me they were listening and this was the first gig they were ever taken to and what great memories it brought back. Comments like that - and hearing how much people enjoy listening to them - make the time spent on these more than worthwhile.

Show 15: Talk Talk - Plaza de Toros, Salamanca, Spain, 10 September 1986

This was originally a gig broadcast on Spanish television at the time and this was a fairly dry soundboard mix I think. Its responded fairly well to remastering, so if you like Talk Talk in their later period, you will enjoy this. The recording seemed to be a little bit slow, so I corrected that too.

Show 13: The Sweet - At Eissporthalle Berlin, Germany - 16 May 1976

In 1976 The Sweet finally broke away from their songwriters and penned their own first album, Give Us A Wink. Always popular in Germany, this gig is a soundboard recording of their night in Berlin and features their...unusual twist on some of the lyrics to their hits! I remember this one took a while to work on - some tape faults, noise and a fair bit of EQ - but for a mid 70s recording it sounds pretty damn decent now - enjoy!
