Revisited Old Shows Now Uploading

There are now 32 shows I've revisited and improved when a donator has asked for that show as separate files - single MP3 versions of these further improved gigs have been uploaded to the site on their original pages. This isn't all that NEED improving - just those I've been asked to send to donators so far and while doing that, I've thought I could make them better.

Short Break - Updated Content

The latest show (featuring XTC here) will be the last new remaster of 2018. However, some updated and better quality content will be uploaded during the break.

Short break
We're planning on moving house, hopefully in about 5 weeks or so, up into a rural part of Scotland. Before then, there's lots to do and sort out, and where we're moving to has slower internet than here, so upload speeds will be slower - and necessitate me leaving files to upload over night I think, rather than the several minutes they take here! So I'm trying to get through as many of the old shows as possible and upload the separated versions for any donators that request shows (doesn't happen often but I like to be prepared!) to save time after we move. Once they're on the server, these usually take much less than the 48 hour turnaround I usually give to process the order and send on. Updated content
When I do split the shows for donators, some of the older shows (if they need it) get revisited and improved again when I prep them as separated FLACs or MP3s; I think I've got better at this restoration lark since I first started in 2012 and some of the older shows certainly don't sound as good as I remember. For the first time, I will be updating the free "single MP3" versions on here as free downloads, with those new and improved versions (previously, only donators got the benefit of any improvements). Donators still get the separated MP3s and FLACs of course - and not EVERY old show needs reworking - but I'll post updates on this as I go. 

The future
New shows will resume asap after the move - probably early in January 2019. I have tons of material to work on - literally hundreds of shows - about half a terabyte's worth, last time I checked, by artists yet to appear on Live and Loud! as well as others who have appeared already. And new ones being found regularly too, of course! And hopefully (!) once the move is out of the way, I can get back to a more regular and frequent release schedule next year.

So there really is much more to come! Stay tuned...

Show 130 - XTC - Live At The Rainbow, London - 17 September 1979

A second show for the archive from XTC, this time from 1979. This was a soundboard recording, ripped from a vinyl copy originally I think. It's a great gig, with a setlist spanning their career to date, from the 3D EP to the recently released Drums and Wires.

I removed some vinyl rumble and hiss, as well as evening out the volume between some tracks which were oddly very loud or pretty quiet. Once all that was done, I then set about clarifying the recording with 30 band EQ. Oddly, Battery Brides was far more bass heavy than other tracks - like someone had tweaked it before, or the song had been put in from a different copy of the recording. So that got tweaked separately to more closely match the other songs in the set.

Show 129: Nash The Slash - Live At City Garden, Trenton, New Jersey - 21 Feb 1983

An outing for Nash The Slash from early 1983 with a set including a few songs from his album American BandAges which would be released the following year. For those who only really know him for the Children Of The Night album in the UK, the versions of Swing Shift and Deadman's Curve here are different - studio versions of these appeared on the compilation The Million Year Picnic - so it's a very interesting listen.

This was a soundboard recording I think, although 1 track, Womble, is badly affected by what sounds like FM interference - which was mostly in good condition but some tracks were very noisy and/or hissy and recording quality took a nose dive during 1 or 2 songs. So while most of the tracks have only needed a fair bit of the old 30 band EQ to improve things, I've spent a lot of time trying to rescue some of the others. Womble is, I'm afraid, still rather noisy but worth a listen. Hopefully the rest of the gig makes up for it!

Show 128 - Slade - Live At The Winterland, San Francisco - 6 May 1973

A great set from Slade from one of their many dates in the USA; a short set from when they were second on the bill to Humble Pie. The source is a bootleg with other tracks tacked on from a different gig - but I like the sets on here to represent individual gigs wherever possible, so this is just the 6 tracks from The Winterland.

It's a great recording anyway with just a couple of things that needed repairing before I could set the 30 band EQ loose on it. The EQ cleared the mix quite a bit and brought out the drums - this is a really powerful performance (well, Hear Me Calling isn't quite so much but once the sound guy had sorted out the mix they were off and rocking!) and, like Slade live always was, best played loud!

Show 127 - Siouxsie and The Banshees - Live At The Vortex, London - 11 July 1977

I knew when I got this bootleg that it was one I'd like to have a crack at improving a bit - it being 1 of the first shows to feature John McKay on guitar, so completing the lineup that would get signed to Polydor in 1978 and record the first 2 albums, "The Scream" and "Join Hands". It was a muffled old recording but was just about listenable, although far from clear (the original is also on youtube somewhere if you haven't heard it).

For this one there was quite a bit of editing to clean up a few issues - "Mirage" is chopped off after a minute and a half, so I faded that out rather than just having it stop; a few parts had varying volume; a couple of tape drop outs needed fixing; the whole thing was quite hissy so I took some of that away without affecting the recording too much.

Then the whole thing was much louder on the right than the left, so that needed evening out, so I balanced the stereo image, such as it is. After all that, I whipped out the trusty 30 band EQ to remove some of the muddy midrange and harsh top end, as well as try and bring back some weight to the drums and bass (there wasn't any). While it's still not perfect and there's no way it would ever sound as clear as (say) a soundboard or FM recording, I'm pretty happy with the improvements I have been able to make. The beginning of the recording (as is so often the case) is probably the worst part.

Show 126 - David Bowie - Live at The Astoria, London - 2 Dec 1999

It's been a while since I did a Bowie show - long overdue! This is a great show from the short (but perfectly formed) "Hours" tour in 1999 with plenty of banter with the crowd from Bowie throughout, not to mention some great versions of songs.

The source files were in rather dull and muddy mono - the text file with the lossless source files claimed it was a soundboard recording (I think it's either that or a mix from a video soundtrack). After transferring the files to a single .wav file and sorting out a few clicks and some sound level variations, 30 band EQ was used to refine and clear up the bottom end and roll off harsh mids and upper frequencies, to bring some clarity to the mix (Sterling Campbell and Gail Ann Dorsey are now rather clearer in the mix than before).

***2025 UPDATE***

Someone donated to the website and asked for this gig to be put on CD. Given I did this restoration almost 7 years ago, I figured it was worth me trying to improve on what I had done before. So with better software than I had at the time and new mastering tools, I WAS able to improve quite a bit on the sound quality. My donor now has that new version on CD and you now get that new version for free here too. And as it's  stored on the new cloud server, it's also now streamable for the first time.

Live and Loud! Radio is an occasional series of free downloads, which started in January 2017. Radio sessions that never got an official release, sympathetically repaired and remastered and then released onto the internet, all for free.

No theme tune, no intro from me - just the original session, repaired and remastered and available in a downloadable zip file containing each separate track.

Sourced from lossless files, compared to some this was pretty straight forward - some tape hiss was removed, a few clicks, then 30 band EQ, which varied for each track as rach track is quite different - some had more than others. Mainly a little bottom end, some reduction of harsh mids where appropriate and rolling off the top end when that was a bit hard on the ears.

Show 125 - The Human League - Live at Derby Assembly Rooms - 21 May 1980

Probably a final gig on Live and Loud! for the Mk 1 lineup - there aren't many recordings of them and the best one, from Amsterdam, I've already done (here). The others (including this one) are audience recordings and mostly not very good ones; this one is the clearest I've come across and even this has taken a lot of work to clean up. Still, it''s a full set and so well worth preserving!

So...this is an audience recording of The Human League - warts and all. Analogue synths occasionally (!) go out of tune, there are bum notes...some great backing vocals on some songs from Martyn Ware - this is a proper live recording. I tidied up some differences in volume and used a lot of 30 band EQ to bring back some bottom end (you can hear the kick drums and bass synths far better now), toned down the harsh top end and made the recording clearer. I also worked on the sound to widen it - this was originally recorded back in 1980 on a little mono tape recorder, so kudos to the original taper for getting a clear recording for me to work on 38 years later... Hopefully if he ever comes across this, he'll like this improved version.

Show 124 - Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Live At Wembley Arena - 13 January 1987

A debut on Live and Loud!  for Frankie Goes To Hollywood from their last tour in the UK, when they were literally imploding back stage, with relations between Holly Johnson and the rest of the band at breaking point.

This was an FM broadcast recorded off air I think as this isn't the full set. It's also another recording someone had tried to improve before I came across it - everything whacked up to 11 and every song faded out - the intro to Rage Hard was even chopped off altogether and the song gone (guessing this was where the original C90 tape needed turning over). 1 or 2 tracks also sounded like they're from a different recording altogether. 30 band EQ has once again paid dividends and undone much of what was done - tightened up the bass, made the mix clearer and not so tiring on the ears and addressed some faults where the recording went very dull at times. All while still retaining the power in the sound on stage.
